# Design site navigation that gets every important page crawled and linked.

Your site has 10,000 pages. Google Search Console shows 3,000 indexed. The other 7,000 exist. `robots.txt` does not block them, and they carry no `noindex` tag. They are orphans: no internal link points to them. Google cannot find what it cannot reach, and your navigation did not reach them.

Navigation is crawl architecture as well as user experience. Good navigation spreads PageRank to the right pages, lets crawlers discover pages fast, and shows search engines your content hierarchy. Poor navigation orphans pages, spends crawl effort on low-value URLs, and spreads link equity across pagination instead of revenue pages.

This guide covers hierarchy, header, footer, and sidebar links, breadcrumbs, faceted navigation controls, internal link distribution, and orphan rescue. The patterns apply to an ecommerce site with 50,000 products and to a SaaS site with 200 landing pages.

## Know how navigation shapes crawling

Google's crawler follows links. A page with no internal links can still sit in your CMS and your XML sitemap. Google treats it as low priority and may never index it.

**Crawl budget is finite.** Google crawls a limited number of your URLs, based on server health and on how much demand your URLs have. If crawlers must pass 50 pagination pages to reach products, the budget goes to pagination.

**Link equity flows through internal links.** Pages with many internal links collect more equity and rank better. The homepage usually holds the most, because every page links to it through the logo. Navigation passes that equity to top categories, and categories pass it to subcategories and products. Poor navigation leaves valuable pages with few links.

Three failures cause most damage:

- **Orphan pages.** No page links to them. Common causes: content added to the CMS but not to menus, old posts that no new post links to, and products missing from category pages. Find them in Screaming Frog: add the XML sitemap and Search Console as URL sources, then run crawl analysis. Add links to them from relevant pages.
- **Deep hierarchies.** Pages five or more clicks from the homepage get crawled less often. A path such as Home, Category, Subcategory, Sub-subcategory, Product puts the product at depth four or more. Keep important pages within three clicks.
- **Navigation that needs JavaScript.** Hamburger menus, mega-menus, and filters that create their links only with JavaScript. If the script fails or times out, the links never appear. Render links in HTML, then enhance them with JavaScript. The [mobile-first design guide](/articles/mobile-first-design-seo) shows the pattern.

## Build a shallow hierarchy

Hierarchical navigation moves from broad to specific: Home, Shop, Men's Clothing, Shirts, Casual Shirts, Blue Oxford Shirt. It helps users drill down and helps Google understand content relationships and topical authority.

### Apply the three-click rule to important pages

The old rule said every page should be within three clicks of the homepage. Large sites break that rule, and large retailers often put products five or more clicks deep. The working rule: important pages sit within three clicks, and long-tail pages can go deeper if category pages link to them.

Rank depth by organic potential. Category pages that target high-volume keywords belong one or two clicks from the homepage, in the main navigation. Product pages for long-tail keywords can sit four or five clicks away. Past about seven clicks, Google may rarely crawl a page. If your catalog needs that depth, add links from blog posts, related-product widgets, and the sitemap. The [site architecture guide for engineering teams](/articles/site-architecture-seo-engineering) covers hierarchy design in depth.

### Main navigation

The header menu appears on every page, so it is your strongest site-wide link set.

- **Keep top-level items to about seven, give or take two.** People hold five to nine items in working memory. More items slow decisions. If you need more than nine top-level categories, the information architecture is too flat.
- **Use descriptive anchor text.** "Products" tells Google little. "Men's running shoes" tells it what the target page covers.
- **Limit dropdowns to two levels.** Deeper mega-menus are hard to scan. Use breadcrumbs and in-page links for deeper levels.
- **Use real links.** Put `a` elements with `href` values inside a `nav` element. Google follows `a href` links reliably. It does not click elements that navigate only through JavaScript `onclick` handlers.

### Footer navigation

The footer is also site-wide, but users scan it less. Use it for three jobs:

- pages that do not fit the header, such as privacy, terms, and contact, plus secondary categories;
- site-wide links to about ten pillar pages you want to rank, which gives each one a link from every page;
- a limited set of useful links, about 30 to 50; 200 keyword-stuffed footer links look spammy to users and to Google.

### Sidebar navigation

Sidebars on posts, articles, and some product pages serve two purposes. Related-content widgets link topically related articles or products. Category lists let readers switch topics and let Google find every category archive from any post.

Keep sidebars lean. In the original PageRank model, each link on a page shares that page's equity. With 100 links, each gets about 1 percent; with 10, each gets about 10 percent. Google's current systems are more complex, but the principle holds: fewer, more relevant links carry more weight each.

## Add breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs show the user's place in the hierarchy, for example Home > Men's Clothing > Shirts > Casual Shirts. They help users move up a level and give search engines more internal links and structured data.

### Mark up breadcrumbs

Add `BreadcrumbList` structured data so Google can show the path in search results:

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [{
    "@type": "ListItem",
    "position": 1,
    "name": "Home",
    "item": "https://example.com"
  },{
    "@type": "ListItem",
    "position": 2,
    "name": "Men's Clothing",
    "item": "https://example.com/mens-clothing"
  },{
    "@type": "ListItem",
    "position": 3,
    "name": "Casual Shirts",
    "item": "https://example.com/mens-clothing/casual-shirts"
  }]
}
```

Google can then show "example.com > Men's Clothing > Casual Shirts" in the result. The context helps searchers choose the result before they click.

### Let breadcrumbs pass equity upward

Each breadcrumb is an internal link. A product page with breadcrumbs links to its category, its parent category, and the homepage. Google follows those links, and category pages collect equity from all their children.

### Choose a breadcrumb pattern

| Pattern | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Single path | Home > Category > Subcategory > Page | Sites with a clear taxonomy, such as ecommerce and documentation |
| Multiple paths | Two trails for a product in two categories | Only when necessary; it complicates the interface |
| Attribute based | Home > Men's Shoes > Size 10 > Nike | Risky; it creates many filter URLs. Control them as described in the next section |

## Control faceted navigation

Faceted navigation lets users filter by size, color, price, or brand. Ecommerce users need it. Misconfigured, it wastes much of the crawl.

Each filter combination can create a URL. A shoe category with 5 sizes, 8 colors, and 10 brands has 5 × 8 × 10 = 400 combinations. Most show the same products in a different order or subset. Google sees duplicate or thin pages, and crawl effort goes to filters instead of products. The [faceted navigation guide for ecommerce](/articles/ecommerce-seo-faceted-navigation) covers catalog-specific cases.

Google's faceted navigation documentation, last updated in December 2025, recommends two defaults. First, block filter URLs you do not need indexed with `robots.txt`. Second, put filter state in a URL fragment (`#`), which crawlers ignore. The options below build on those defaults.

**Option 1: noindex filter pages.** Add this to filter-combination URLs:

```html
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow">
```

Google drops the pages from the index but can still follow their links to products. Use it when filter pages have no unique content and target no keyword. Google has said that it eventually crawls long-term `noindex` pages less and may stop following their links. Do not rely on them for product discovery.

**Option 2: canonical to the main category.** Point filter pages at the unfiltered category:

```html
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/shoes">
```

Use it when a filter page is a plain subset of the category. Google treats the canonical as a hint and can ignore it when the pages differ a lot.

**Option 3: index high-value filters.** Some combinations match real searches. "Men's size 10 Nike running shoes" is a query, and a page for it can rank. Index a filter page when it meets three conditions:

- it has search volume in Google Keyword Planner or Ahrefs;
- it has a unique title, meta description, and ideally unique copy;
- it returns enough products; do not index a filter that shows two.

Treat those pages as landing pages, with no `noindex` and a self-referencing canonical.

**Option 4: filters that do not change the URL.** Apply filters with JavaScript and keep the URL at `example.com/shoes`. Google crawls one URL, not 400. Users cannot bookmark or share a filtered view, so use this only when that is acceptable.

Google retired the URL Parameters tool in Search Console in April 2022. Older guides that tell you to configure parameters there no longer apply.

## Distribute internal links on purpose

Your homepage and top categories should collect the most equity. Products and posts should get equity in proportion to their value.

### Hub and spoke

A hub is a pillar or category page on a broad topic. Spokes are articles or products on specific subtopics. The hub links to every relevant spoke. Each spoke links back to the hub and to related spokes.

Example for a camera retailer:

- **Hub:** the "Digital cameras" category, which links to every camera and buying guide.
- **Spokes:** camera product pages, a "How to choose a camera" guide, and a "DSLR vs mirrorless" comparison.

The hub collects equity from all spokes and competes for "digital cameras". The spokes rank for long-tail queries such as "Sony A7R V review".

### Contextual links

Links inside body content carry more weight than menu links, for three reasons. The anchor text describes the target, such as "DSLR cameras" instead of "Learn more". Readers click in-content links more often than footer or sidebar links. Editorial placement signals that a person chose the link.

- Link to three to five relevant internal pages in each post or article.
- Use natural, descriptive anchors. "Best running shoes" works; "best running shoes for marathon training buy now" reads as spam.
- Mix links to hubs and to related spokes.
- Avoid excess. Twenty internal links in a 500-word post looks unnatural.

For total links per page, 50 to 100 including navigation, footer, sidebar, and content is a practical ceiling. Google can crawl more, but each extra link dilutes the rest. Link your most important pages most often. The [internal linking architecture guide for developers](/articles/internal-linking-architecture-developers) shows how to build these links into templates.

Do not `nofollow` internal links. `nofollow` asks Google not to pass PageRank, and internal links exist to pass it. Login pages, admin panels, and user-generated content you do not vouch for are the exceptions.

### Mega-menus

A mega-menu is not harmful by itself. A 200-link mega-menu, however, gives each link a tiny share of equity and adds HTML, CSS, and JavaScript weight. Keep it under about 50 links. Keep every link in the HTML. Defer only the heavy parts, such as images, until hover or tap.

### Pagination

Paginated URLs, such as `/page/2` and `/page/3`, are crawlable. A "Load more" button often needs JavaScript and creates no new URL, so Google may never trigger it. Google stopped using `rel="next"` and `rel="prev"` as an indexing signal in 2019. The markup does no harm and other tools can read it, but crawlable pagination links do the work. For the best user experience, add infinite scroll on top of server-rendered pagination links.

### International navigation

Use `hreflang` annotations to tell Google which language and region each page targets. Each language version needs its own complete navigation, with the same structure. Your US header links to `/en-us/products`; your French header links to `/fr-fr/produits`. Add a language switcher in the header or footer. The [international SEO guide](/articles/international-seo-guide) covers the annotation rules.

## Rescue orphan pages

Find orphans with Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Site Audit. For each one:

1. Decide whether it has value. If it targets a keyword or converts, rescue it. If not, delete it or merge it into a stronger page.
2. Add it to navigation if it is evergreen content or a key product: header, footer, or sidebar.
3. Add contextual links from three to five related pages.
4. Add it to the XML sitemap so Google can find it while the new links get crawled.

Rerun the orphan report after each release. Orphans come back whenever content ships without links.
