# How to Move ChatGPT Memory to Claude Without Importing Old Mistakes.

An owner asks ChatGPT to summarize three years of working context, then pastes that profile into Claude. Claude sounds familiar on the first turn. It also inherits a retired offer, a guessed preference, and an obsolete client status.

As checked September 19, 2026, Anthropic documents a memory import process: request a working-context summary from another provider, review it, then paste it through Claude's supported memory import control. Account availability and settings can change. [Anthropic: Import and export memory](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587-import-and-export-your-memory-from-claude)

That path moves a generated profile. It does not turn old chats into an approved business record. Preserve the raw source, review every promoted item, import only the working profile, and test one recurring job before cutover.

After reviewing the import, run the [Claude project-boundary test](/articles/is-claude-memory-worth-it-business) before using it across client projects.

## Claude's import moves a profile, not the company record

The import process is designed to help Claude learn how a person works. It can carry preferences and useful context into a new product quickly. For a wider comparison of the two memory systems, read [Claude vs ChatGPT Memory for Business.](/articles/chatgpt-vs-claude-memory-business)

A generated profile still reflects the source model's selection and compression. It may blend explicit instructions, repeated habits, inferred preferences, past facts, and temporary situations. It may omit source links and effective dates.

Use the import for personal continuity. Do not make it the only migration mechanism for prices, client permissions, contractual terms, open obligations, or approved procedures.

The broader [model-switch guide](/articles/switch-ai-models-without-losing-context) explains how canonical records and acceptance fixtures survive any provider change.

## Export and preserve the raw ChatGPT source

Before changing or deleting anything, request the available ChatGPT data export. Preserve it in a dated, read-only migration folder. Record the account, request date, received archive hash, and storage location.

Do not edit the raw export. Create a separate review workspace.

```text
chatgpt-to-claude/
  raw/
    chatgpt-export-2026.08.23.zip
    export.sha256
    candidates.csv
    working-profile.md
    business-record-links.md
  tests/
    recurring-job-fixture/
  receipts/
    chatgpt-to-claude-migration-receipt.md
```

The export may contain sensitive and unrelated conversations. Limit access. Do not upload the full archive to a new provider as a convenience step.

OpenAI documents account data export as a way to receive chat history and other account data. [OpenAI: Export ChatGPT history and data](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data)

## Separate preferences, facts, decisions, and drafts

Review candidates by role:

- preferences describe how the person likes to work;
- facts describe a current, source-supported condition;
- decisions record an approved choice, owner, and effective date;
- procedures define repeatable work;
- drafts and ideas remain evidence, not authority;
- sensitive items require a separate handling decision.

A preference such as concise responses may fit Claude memory. A current client status belongs in the client record. A writing example belongs in a labeled examples folder. A proposed price from a brainstorm belongs in the raw archive unless later approval exists.

Do not let frequency decide authority. A wrong fact repeated in twenty chats is still wrong.

## Reject stale and unsupported memory

For every candidate, ask:

- Is there a source outside the chat?
- Is the source current?
- Was the item explicit or inferred?
- Who owns correction?
- Does it belong in personal memory or a business record?
- Would a new employee be permitted to see it?

Reject unsupported claims. Mark uncertain items unresolved. Do not soften uncertainty into a polished sentence. If the imported Claude profile recalls a wrong fact, read [Claude Remembers Incorrectly: Correct and Retest.](/articles/correct-wrong-claude-memory)

OpenAI's Memory FAQ says its memory summary is a high-level view and may not include everything used from chats, files, apps, and memories. That makes the summary useful for review, but insufficient as a complete export manifest. [OpenAI: Memory FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq)

## Import only the reviewed working profile

Build a narrow profile for Claude:

```markdown
# Working profile for Claude import
reviewed:: 2026.08.23
owner:: USER-001
## Stable preferences
- Use concise operational prose.
- Ask when a missing choice changes the result.
## Work boundaries
- Treat linked business files as authoritative for current facts.
- Do not treat this profile as authority for prices or client status.
- Stop before external sends, purchases, deletions, or production changes.
## Business record pointers
- Current offer: owned-record://offer/current
- Client status: owned-record://clients/index
- Corrections: owned-record://corrections/accepted
```

Keep the profile short enough to inspect. Do not embed a complete company archive. Import it through Claude's current memory controls, then inspect what Claude retained.

## Keep canonical business files outside both products

Move the business layer through files or systems the company controls. That layer should include source order, decisions, corrections, open work, approval boundaries, and recovery instructions.

Let ChatGPT and Claude use adapters for the same packet. The adapters can differ. The business record should not.

[Migrate ChatGPT history to business memory](/articles/migrate-chatgpt-history-to-business-memory) gives the promotion workflow for useful chat evidence.

This separation also makes rollback possible. If Claude's imported profile creates a problem, delete or correct the profile without losing the canonical record.

## Run the same recurring job before cutover

Choose one weekly task with a known answer. Use synthetic or approved low-risk data.

Freeze the source packet. Run the job in a fresh ChatGPT session and a fresh Claude session. Give both the same business files. Do not give Claude the old conversation.

Check:

1. Both use the current decision.
2. Both reject one superseded fact.
3. Both apply one accepted correction.
4. Both cite or identify the approved sources.
5. Both stop before the same external action.
6. Claude does not rely on an imported profile for the business answer.
7. A missing required source produces a blocked result.

Compare business outcome and boundary compliance. Wording can differ.

## Record `chatgpt-to-claude-migration-receipt.md`

```markdown
# ChatGPT to Claude migration receipt
raw_export:: chatgpt-export-2026.08.23.zip
raw_export_sha256:: pending
candidates_reviewed:: 0
preferences_promoted:: 0
business_records_promoted:: 0
items_rejected:: 0
items_unresolved:: 0
claude_profile_version:: 2026.08.23.1
fixture:: weekly-account-brief-v1
chatgpt_result:: pending
claude_result:: pending
rollback_point:: pre-import profile export
cutover_status:: blocked until acceptance passes
```

Attach source paths and output hashes. Record the Claude memory setting and account used. Keep rejected and unresolved counts visible.

Do not call the migration complete because the import screen accepted the text. Completion requires the recurring-job test and a usable rollback point.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The migration may request an account export, hash and store it in an approved location, review chat evidence, create a synthetic fixture, import a reviewed personal profile, and run draft-only tests.

It stops before uploading the full archive, moving client data to a new provider, deleting ChatGPT history, canceling a subscription, changing organization retention, or making Claude the production standard. The account owner, data owner, and system owner approve those actions.

If a consequential business fact exists only in the generated profile, the cutover stops until that fact is promoted into an owned record or rejected.

## Questions about How to Move ChatGPT Memory to Claude Without Importing Old Mistakes

### How can I move my ChatGPT data to Claude?

Preserve the official ChatGPT export, then separate stable preferences, current business facts, decisions, corrections, and project state before importing a narrow working profile. Keep canonical business records outside both products and test one recurring job before cutover.

### When moving ChatGPT memory to Claude, do you lose the memory inside ChatGPT?

An export or copied memory profile does not itself delete the source account or its records. Treat export, import, cancellation, memory deletion, and account deletion as separate operations and verify each one in the current product controls.

### What should I do if my ChatGPT memory is messy after years of use?

Do not import the entire memory summary as trusted business context. Review each item as a preference, fact, decision, draft, or unsupported claim, reject stale material, and link accepted records to maintained sources.
