# Move a real estate agent website from Squarespace to WordPress

For a Squarespace to WordPress migration, separate the content import from the website rebuild. Inventory your seller pages, buyer guides, photographs, downloads, and inquiry paths. Require a preview showing what survived and what needs reconstruction before changing the live website.

Squarespace exports selected content as WordPress-format XML. It excludes design settings and several content types. An export alone therefore leaves reconstruction work. [Squarespace export documentation](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Move when the proposed WordPress website solves a requirement your current site cannot meet within an acceptable scope. Ask for demonstrations of editing, IDX compatibility where needed, inquiry delivery, and ongoing care. Use those checks to judge the proposal. Do not assume a platform change will produce more buyer or seller inquiries.

## Name the destination before commissioning the import

WordPress.com includes managed hosting. Self-hosted WordPress uses a separate hosting arrangement. [WordPress hosting distinction](https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Have your builder identify the destination, host, editor, theme, and required integrations. Name who handles updates, backups, and faults after handover. For WordPress.com, require the proposed plan to support the exact features in your scope.

Ask your IDX provider to confirm compatibility with that destination. Keep installation and board approval work in a separate, explicit requirement. Include a buyer's route from the proposed listing display to the receiving inbox in acceptance testing.

If editing your biography and local guides is the reason for moving, perform those edits in the preview yourself. Request a separate speed check using the proposed images and listing tools. Compare the recorded tasks and results with the current site.

## Inventory what Squarespace exports and what needs rebuilding

Squarespace lists layout pages, one blog with its posts, text blocks, and image blocks among exportable content. Text from some other blocks retains minimal structure. Its exclusions include additional blogs, portfolio and calendar pages, drafts, audio and video blocks, header and footer content, styles, and custom CSS. [Export inclusions and exclusions](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Use these proposed checks against your own page inventory:

| Material to inspect | Work to put in the migration scope |
| --- | --- |
| Seller service page and biography | Compare imported text, headings, photographs, contact details, and approved brokerage identification |
| Community guides and blog posts | Reconcile each collection against the import; name the recovery method for anything absent |
| Portfolio, calendar, or other excluded page | Preserve approved source material and commission an equivalent page where needed |
| Header, footer, menus, and contact actions | Rebuild navigation and every agreed route to a seller or buyer inquiry |
| Forms, listing displays, and custom embeds | Require separate reconstruction and functional tests rather than assuming XML preserves them |
| Draft material | Retain approved working copy separately and decide what belongs on the replacement site |

Record each item's old address, destination, source material, and repair owner. Mark it as imported, rebuilt, or unresolved. Keep every intended page accounted for before switching.

For export, Squarespace requires a published, public site and does not support trial-site export. Select the primary blog if prompted. Download the XML through Import & export content, Export, then WordPress. [Squarespace export procedure](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Keep a dated copy of that file. Ask the builder to inspect a representative seller page and local guide before estimating the remaining work.

## Import into a preview and inspect the result

WordPress.com uses Tools → Import and its Squarespace importer, or its guided importer if that option is absent. Upload the XML and review author assignments. [WordPress.com import instructions](https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For self-hosted WordPress, the official instructions use Tools → Import → WordPress and the WordPress Importer. They include author mapping and a download-attachments option. A failed import can leave partial content; retrying may create duplicates. [WordPress import documentation](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/importing-content/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Use a separate preview for this work. Have the builder record import warnings and compare the result with your inventory. If the job fails, inspect partial records before retrying. Require each unresolved item to have a recovery decision.

Open the seller page, biography, and representative community guide in the editor. Inspect headings, lists, links, captions, and inquiry buttons. Compare the published preview on phone and desktop with the approved source material.

If imported content appears in a Classic block, WordPress provides a Convert to blocks command. [Classic block documentation](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/classic-block/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Try conversion on a saved preview copy. Recheck formatting, image placement, links, and contact actions afterward. Ask the builder to reconstruct any missing layout or function. Require editable content you can maintain at handover.

## Recover images and downloads before cancelling Squarespace

Squarespace warns that self-hosted imports may retain image reference links instead of copying files. WordPress.com also warns that some images may be missing after import. Linked PDFs need separate recovery because Squarespace says they cannot import through this export. [Squarespace media limits](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content), [WordPress.com image guidance](https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Keep the source publicly accessible during export and import, as WordPress.com instructs. [Source availability requirement](https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For each required photograph, ask the builder to show the stored replacement file and the page using it. Inspect the image address and verify the file belongs to the agreed destination. Treat a photograph still served from Squarespace as unresolved until its recovery is confirmed.

Supply originals where available and permitted for reuse. Upload missing images, reconnect them to the correct pages, and compare captions and alternative text with approved material. Check each seller guide or buyer download by opening the replacement file.

Retain a media inventory alongside the page inventory. Require proof of local recovery before authorizing cancellation. A visible image in the preview is only the starting check.

## Preserve the page paths that the export does not settle

WordPress supports a custom post permalink structure. Its documentation defines `%postname%` as the post slug. [WordPress permalink settings](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/customize-permalinks/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

If your current posts use `/blog/post-name`, ask the builder to evaluate `/blog/%postname%/` and reconcile the actual resulting paths. This is an illustrative pattern. Copy each existing path from your inventory rather than deriving it from a page title.

Check page slugs and nesting separately from the blog setting. Verify every retained seller service page, local guide, and biography address. Where a change is required, name its replacement and test the redirect and final destination. Google's site-move guidance says to prepare a URL mapping and configure the server to redirect from the old URLs to the new ones. [Google Search Central site-move guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Use the existing [site migration checklist](https://scalewithsearch.com/articles/site-migration-seo-checklist) for the wider URL and launch checks. Keep this migration scope focused on the export, reconstruction, and retained paths.

## Accept the inquiry path before switching the live website

Arrange clearly marked test inquiries with the receiving person. Use contact details you control. Follow the seller-page contact action and the buyer path independently on phone and desktop.

Check the received message, reply details, page or property context, and agreed destination. If a contact-system connection is required, inspect its matching record separately. Keep the screen confirmation and receipt as distinct evidence.

Require the builder to provide an acceptance record:

| Check | Evidence to retain |
| --- | --- |
| Content | Page inventory reconciled with imported and rebuilt material |
| Media | Required images stored at the destination; downloads open correctly |
| Editing | You complete the agreed biography and local-page edits |
| Paths | Retained addresses and agreed redirects reach the correct pages |
| IDX where required | Provider confirmation and a demonstrated listing-to-inquiry route |
| Delivery | Marked seller and buyer inquiries received at each agreed destination |
| Care and speed | Named support owner and recorded tests of the finished pages |

Agree the switch conditions and recovery plan with the builder. Repeat inquiry and media checks on the live replacement. Close unresolved items before retiring the source site.

## Put the website requirement in the brief

Bring your current website, page and media inventories, export gaps, editing requirements, and inquiry destinations to the [real estate website page](/for/real-estate). Request a written scope that names the destination and acceptance evidence.

Scale With Search publishes a $2,000 whole website fix for one listing-agent or small-team website repaired or rebuilt as a static site. It includes client-owned hosting, inquiry-path repair with proof of receipt, site files, an editing guide, and a publishing script. [Published whole website fix](https://scalewithsearch.com/work). Checked: 2026.10.14.

If WordPress is a firm requirement, state it in the brief and resolve it in the written scope before paying.
