Meta AI sits inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. You do not install anything or learn a new interface. You tap the button, ask, and get an answer. That design fits quick questions. It does not fit ongoing work. Meta AI does not hold your project details, last week's discussion, or a structured brief across conversations. It has a memory feature, but that memory stores short facts that the model extracts, inside Meta's apps. This article describes Meta AI as it worked when this article was first written (January 2026). Meta changes these features often, so confirm the current behavior in your account. ## Know what Meta AI remembers By January 2026, Meta AI had memory features in WhatsApp and Messenger. They worked as follows. Meta AI can remember details that you share in one-on-one chats with it. It does not save memory from group chats. When Meta AI saves a detail, "Memory updated" appears below your message. You can view the saved details, and you can delete any single memory. If your WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook accounts are linked in Accounts Center, Meta AI can use saved details across those accounts. Meta describes Memory as a record of what you tell Meta AI. Your chats with other people are not the source. Your conversations with Meta AI itself are. ## Find the four limits ### Conversation depth resets Meta AI keeps high-level facts, such as your name, your job, or your city. The working context of a conversation does not carry forward. The detail that you built across three earlier chats does not load into the fourth. You can clear context on purpose. When this article was first written, the command `/reset-ai` cleared one conversation, and `/reset-all-ais` cleared memory across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Those commands help privacy. The problem is the reset that you did not ask for. Meta AI had no project mode or persistent session that held full context across several chats. ### Meta AI chooses what it keeps Meta AI decides which details are important. You cannot write a context file, structure the memory, or tell it "always remember this framework." Sometimes the extraction works. You mention that you are vegetarian, and later restaurant suggestions reflect it. You cannot hand it a Markdown file with project requirements, a style guide, or a client list, though. You feed it through conversation and hope it keeps the right details. When it misses one, you explain it again. ### It is built for consumer tasks Meta AI's memory reflects its consumer purpose. It had no projects, no workspaces, and no persistent file storage when this article was first written. It fits these tasks: - recipe ideas; - travel suggestions; - nearby restaurants; - news summaries. It does not fit these tasks: - client project management; - ongoing research; - a consistent writing style across drafts; - technical requirements that must stay exact. ### The memory lives on Meta's servers Saved memories sit on Meta's servers. You cannot export them, back them up, or keep them under version control. If Meta changes the memory system, you adapt to it. If Meta removes old memories, they are gone. If you leave Meta's apps, the memory stays behind. Personal and business details can mix, and a client name can appear in an unrelated chat. ChatGPT projects later added a project-scoped memory option. Check the current settings. You create a project, and Claude keeps a memory summary for that project across its conversations. Meta AI had no equivalent grouping of related chats. **Claude Code.** Claude Code reads a `CLAUDE.md` file that you write and control. That memory is explicit, file-based, and portable. Meta AI's memory is generated by the model, stored by Meta, and limited to Meta's apps. Each design is a different kind of memory. You can delete single memories, wipe memory with `/reset-all-ais`, and view what Meta AI stored. Those controls cover the Memory feature. They do not describe every use of your conversations with Meta AI. Meta's description limits which chats feed Memory. It does not state how Meta uses the conversations that you have with Meta AI itself. Read Meta's current privacy policy for that answer before you share business details. ## Know where the memory cannot follow you With linked accounts, Meta AI memory can carry across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Outside those apps, it does not exist. If you work in Notion, Google Docs, or a code editor, Meta AI cannot follow. You cannot place a `CLAUDE.md` file in a workspace and have Meta AI read it. For context that moves between tools, see [persistent context across AI tools](/articles/persistent-context-across-ai-tools). ## Watch the premium tier with the same questions In January 2026, Meta announced plans to test premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Meta said the subscriptions would add exclusive features and expanded AI capabilities. Meta launched those subscriptions in May 2026. In September 2026, it announced Meta One, a bundle that adds more use of compute-heavy AI features. A premium tier would not, by itself, give you file-based memory, context files that you write, or an export of your data. Ask those three questions of any new tier before you move work into it. ## Sort your tasks between the two kinds of tool Meta AI is useful when the task is short and the context is small. Use a file-based assistant when the task depends on context that must stay exact across sessions. | Task | Meta AI | File-based assistant | |---|---|---| | Quick lookup: weather, a restaurant, an article summary | Good fit | Not needed | | Social task: caption ideas, event suggestions, gift ideas | Good fit | Not needed | | Client work that spans weeks | Poor fit: context resets | Good fit: client file loads each session | | Research with structured source material | Poor fit: no file store | Good fit: sources live in the folder | | A writing style across many drafts | Poor fit: no style file | Good fit: style guide loads each session | ## Carry your own context into Meta AI Some teams must use Meta AI, for example because the team works in WhatsApp. Use three measures. 1. **Keep your own context file.** Write a short Markdown file with the project details, preferences, and rules. Paste it at the start of each session. 2. **Limit Meta AI to quick answers.** Do not expect it to hold ongoing work. Treat it as a search box inside your messaging apps. 3. **Move serious work to a file-based assistant.** Use Meta AI for fast lookups. Do project work in a tool such as Claude Code, where the context file loads every session. A worked example of the pasted block for a small catering business: ```text Context for this chat: - Business: small catering company, weekday corporate lunches. - Menu rule: every order includes one vegetarian and one gluten-free option. - Tone for client messages: short, warm, no emoji. - Current task: draft three reply options to a client who asked to move Friday's delivery to 11:30. ``` Keep the block under ten lines. Save it in your notes app, and update it when a rule changes. The block is your memory. Meta AI only reads it for the length of the chat. This is manual work. It still beats an explanation from scratch in every session, and the file stays yours if you change tools. ## Know why the model forgets between conversations A language model works inside a context window, a fixed amount of text that it can process at one time. A new conversation starts with a new window. Earlier conversations do not carry forward unless a product feature or a file puts them back. The model does not choose to forget. The architecture has no place to keep the old window. ChatGPT's Memory feature, like Meta AI's, stores short facts from past conversations. It can hold "prefers short emails." It cannot hold a full operating record: procedures, client details, decision rules, and a complete style guide. Chat history is a log that you scroll through and reread. Memory is structured context that loads into each new session.
