Keep a claim about packaging separate from a claim about the item inside it. The FTC's Green Guides say recycled-content claims concern material recovered or diverted from the waste stream. Its guidance calls for clear qualification when a product or package is only partly made of recycled material. Use the worksheet below to prepare material for the responsible claim reviewer. It establishes no percentage or environmental benefit for a particular product. ## Inventory the wording and visual context List the affected product pages, family descriptions, badges, images, captions, and downloadable sheets. Capture the full proposed presentation for review. Ask what the statement describes: the whole product, one component, packaging, or another defined part. Keep that scope in the claim record. Do not extend a supplier's statement to an entire finished item without the responsible review. Record who owns the material evidence and who may approve the public wording. Keep supplier documents and private commercial records in the appropriate controlled system. ## Build support for the exact claim Ask the reviewer to identify the evidence for the stated amount and material category. Keep the calculation method and product scope with that evidence. Do not invent a percentage to make the page more specific. Under the Green Guides, a pre-consumer content claim needs support that the material would otherwise have entered the waste stream. The guidance distinguishes this from material normally reused within the original manufacturing process. Avoid reducing a qualified product statement to a broader sitewide badge. ## Avoid adding a general environmental promise The FTC warns against broad, unqualified claims such as green or eco-friendly because they are difficult to substantiate. Keep the page within the evidence supporting the specific statement. A recycled-content fact should not become an unsupported claim about overall environmental performance, recyclability, or every product the company sells. ## Check every public placement Compare the finished pages with the approved wording and scope. Inspect phone layouts, image text, product selectors, and downloads. Keep qualifications readable beside the statement they explain.
