A manufacturer may want an approved reference page, a genuine replacement destination, or removal of obsolete content. Start with the product owner. Confirm the status, available documentation, and permitted support wording. Do not infer discontinuation from a missing price or an old PDF. This article proposes a page-decision worksheet. It makes no claim about a particular product, spare part, or support obligation. ## Record the product decision before changing the URL Inventory the current page and linked documents. Identify the public item reference, product owner, status source, and effective date where confirmed. Use these proposed categories: | Approved business decision | Page treatment to consider | | --- | --- | | Item remains current | Correct stale content and keep the current page | | Item is discontinued but reference material remains useful | Keep an accurate reference page with approved status and documents | | Item has an approved replacement | Explain that relationship or route to the appropriate destination | | Content has no continuing purpose or must be withdrawn | Review removal with the responsible owner | | Status is unresolved | Resolve the record before publishing a new claim | Keep a sales status distinct from service, parts, and warranty statements. Have the responsible owner confirm each separately. A discontinued label should not silently promise ongoing supply or declare all support ended. ## Give a retained page an honest purpose On an approved reference page, display the status near the product name. Explain whether the page is for identification, document access, or a support question. Remove purchase controls that no longer match the business process. Label documents by the product and revision they cover. Ask the product owner which historical files may remain public. Avoid replacing an older instruction with an unrelated current document under the same link. Offer a question route that preserves the product reference and the visitor's purpose. Keep support requests separate from requests for new production or a custom replacement. Do not invite customers to rely on an unverified compatibility statement. Let the authorized team review the application and confirm any proposed substitute. ## Use redirects for an appropriate destination Google documents permanent redirects as a way to signal a new canonical destination. It recommends server-side permanent redirects when changing the URL shown in search. Have the product owner approve the relationship between the old and new pages. A replacement link should describe the confirmed relationship without inventing interchangeability. If the older page still explains documents or support that the new page lacks, consider retaining it with a clear link to current information. Avoid sending every old item to the homepage without reviewing the visitor's task. Record the old URL, intended destination, reason, and reviewer. Ask the maintainer to inspect the actual response and final page after implementation. ## Handle removal as a separate decision Google says pages returning most `4xx` responses are not indexed and previously indexed URLs are removed over time. Ask the maintainer to choose the response appropriate to the approved removal. A custom missing-page message should not falsely imply that the product remains orderable. Preserve internal records under the company's established requirements. Removing a public page and disposing of controlled product records are different actions. ## Check the path from an old reference Test the old URL directly. Also inspect links from product families, downloads, search results you have recorded, and support pages. Update internal links to the intended current destination where appropriate. For a retained reference page, test the document links and a marked product question. Confirm that the recipient receives the item reference and purpose. Use test details you control. For a redirect, inspect the final destination and confirm it answers the intended question. For removal, check the missing-page behavior and useful navigation. Keep results and unresolved faults with the change record. Review related pages when product status or replacement information changes.
