# How to Make Gemini Remember Past Conversations, and What It Still Should Not Own.

Gemini remembers an owner's preferred tone but misses a corrected operating rule. The preference appeared across several chats. The rule changed once inside an old conversation.

Past-chat memory can reduce repetition. It does not give every remembered detail equal authority, and it does not replace a maintained company record.

Use Gemini's memory for eligible personal-account personalization. Put current business rules in approved files. Test a fresh chat, a conflicting old chat, correction, and deletion before relying on the route.

**Quick setup:** On the web, open Menu, then Settings & help, then Personal Intelligence, and turn Memory on. In the mobile app, open Menu, tap your profile picture, then Personal Intelligence. You must be 18 or over, signed in to a personal Google Account, with Keep Activity on. These steps match Google's help page as checked September 19, 2026.

The context path must outlast one Gemini setting or account.

## Know why a new Gemini chat starts empty

A freelance designer tells Gemini that she serves health tech startups, describes her usual client, and pastes her style guide. In the next chat, Gemini knows none of it.

Gemini works inside a context window: the text it can use for the current conversation. When you close a chat and open a new one, the window starts empty. Only a memory feature carries anything across, and it carries a selection, not the conversation.

Remembered facts also differ from the reasoning behind them. A memory can hold "prefers Python" or "works on Project Alpha." It does not hold the discussion in which you compared three pricing models and rejected two, or a complete style guide that governs every draft.

Five workarounds are common, and each has a limit:

- **Chat history.** Gemini Apps Activity keeps past chats for a set period. Google's help page, checked September 25, 2026, gives an 18-month auto-delete default, with 3-month, 36-month, and no-deletion options. A new chat does not load that history unless past-chat memory is on and selects it. Otherwise you copy the old context by hand.
- **Connected Google apps.** Gemini can read Docs, Sheets, and Gmail through connected apps. That helps when the context lives in those files. It does not help when your working context sits in other tools or in your head.
- **Browser extensions.** Some third-party extensions save chat logs and paste them into new chats. As the saved context grows, you must choose what to include, and the curation is manual again.
- **A full paste at the start.** A long block of context uses much of the window before the work starts. Models also use details in the middle of a long context less reliably than details at the start or end.
- **A self-introduction in every prompt.** You retype your role, tools, and clients each time. The effort repeats, and details still drop.

Gemini does not read a file from your disk when a chat starts. You upload the file, keep it in Google Drive and point to it, or attach it to a Gem as a knowledge file. A terminal agent such as Claude Code works the other way: it reads a `CLAUDE.md` file from the project folder at every session start. The file stays on your disk, but the text a session reads goes to the model provider for processing. Either way, the durable fix is a context file of a few thousand words that lives outside the chat product and that you control. The guide to [give AI a persistent context layer](/articles/ai-doesnt-remember-context) lists what that file holds and how to check that it loads.

## Turn on past-chat memory and review eligibility

Google's current help page says Gemini Apps can use memory of past chats to personalize responses. The feature requires an adult user, a personal Google Account, and Keep Activity turned on. It is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts. [Google: Gemini past-chat memory](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16598469?hl=en)

If you use a managed work or school account, stop this personal-memory setup here. Evaluate the administrator-approved source route for that account instead. The [small-business ecosystem comparison](/articles/best-ai-small-business-memory) separates personal memory from managed work access. Eligibility was rechecked September 19, 2026.

The same page documents the current control under Personal Intelligence in Gemini settings. Availability varies by surface, and the help page says the feature is not available in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats.

Check the intended account and interface. Do not write an operating procedure from a personal account test and assume it applies to a managed Workspace account.

Record the account type, setting, interface, test date, and feature behavior. Product controls can change.

## Separate memory, instructions, Gems, chats, and connected apps

These context routes serve different roles:

- past-chat memory personalizes from prior Gemini conversations;
- instructions tell Gemini how the user wants responses shaped;
- Gems package a configured role or task;
- current chats provide immediate conversation context;
- connected apps can supply information from Google services;
- maintained company files hold approved business facts and rules.

Do not collapse these into one word called memory. A correction entered in one route may not update the others.

Google's help page also notes that deleting chats and disconnecting an app can both be necessary when information exists in both places. That is a source-lifecycle issue, not one toggle.

## Know what connected apps retrieve and what they do not keep

A comparison written in January 2026 described Google's connected-app layer, first called Extensions and later part of Personal Intelligence. It connected Gemini to Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Photos, YouTube, and Google Maps. It answered one-off questions well: "When is my next meeting with the client?" or "Find the proposal document I shared last week."

That layer retrieves facts. It does not retain who you are or how you work. Gemini searched the connected account when you asked a question. It could read Gmail to answer a question about a client, but it did not keep that client's communication style for the next chat. Personal Intelligence was off by default in January 2026, and it reached only Google-owned apps. Notes in Obsidian and messages in Slack stayed invisible to it.

The same comparison listed four things Gemini did not keep for its users at that time:

- business context, such as a lead qualification process explained three times in one week;
- preferences, such as no passive voice, metrics as percentages, and bullet lists instead of paragraphs;
- project continuity, such as a March service launch discussed in four separate chats;
- corrections, such as client name spellings, industry abbreviations, and report formats.

Its opening example showed the cost. A freelance consultant who bills hourly described that business, and three conversations later Gemini suggested "company-wide policies." The consultant named Obsidian and Claude Code as the tool stack, and the next session recommended Notion and ChatGPT.

The saved-memory layer had its own limits in that observation. Gemini chose what counted as important, showed a "memory updated" signal, and gave no full list of what it kept. A request to save a writing style could come back as "prefers concise language," which is a note, not a style guide. The memory had no structure by domain, such as client work, operations, and marketing.

The context window did not close the gap. In January 2026, Gemini offered a 1 million-token window, about 750,000 words, and Gemini 1.5 Pro had offered 2 million tokens. The window still resets when the chat ends.

The comparison named one more workaround: keep a single chat thread open so that Gemini keeps its context. It fails as the history grows, because relevant context gets buried in the thread, and nothing outside the thread carries over. Current behavior can differ, so run the fixture below on your own account.

## Personalization is not source authority

Past-chat memory can infer what is useful about the user and the user's world. That helps with style, recurring interests, and continuity.

Business authority needs different evidence. A current price should identify its owner and effective date. A client permission should identify its source. A corrected procedure should supersede the older version.

Gemini may remember a past statement accurately while the statement itself is obsolete. Recency also does not prove approval. An email proposal written yesterday may remain subordinate to a contract approved last month.

The architecture in [persistent context across AI tools](/articles/persistent-context-across-ai-tools) keeps the product memory and company record separate.

## Put current business rules in maintained files

Create one small packet for the job:

```text
gemini-job/
  context-manifest.md
  current-rules.md
  decisions.md
  corrections.md
  approved-sources.md
  tests/gemini-memory-fixture.md
  receipts/
```

Keep old versions in a clearly excluded archive. Add source roles and effective dates. If the job uses a connected Google file, record its stable identifier and sharing scope.

The prompt or Gem should point to the current packet and state what to do when a required source is missing. It should not ask past-chat memory to decide the current rule.

[What context should an agent read?](/articles/what-context-should-an-agent-read) provides the minimum-source test.

## Write the context file Gemini cannot build for you

The packet above holds current rules. Start it with one context file that says who you are and how you work. Write it in any plain text editor, such as Notepad, VS Code, or Obsidian, and name it `AI-CONTEXT.md` or `CLAUDE.md`.

1. Write your core identity. "I am a consultant" is too vague. "I am a fractional CFO for SaaS companies. I clean up their books, build financial models, and prepare them for Series A fundraising" gives Gemini usable context.
2. Add voice rules. Typical rules set a direct tone with contractions, bullet lists over paragraphs, active voice, specific numbers, and short sentences. List banned words, such as "solutions," "synergy," and "ecosystem."
3. List current projects with a status. Examples are a Q1 campaign that launches Feb 15, an onboarding redesign in testing, and a retainer offer with open terms.
4. If you work in several areas, separate the domain context. Typical domains are client work (clients, project status, deliverables), marketing (content calendar, SEO strategy, outreach), and operations (team, tools, workflows).
5. Load the file. Gemini uses it when you upload it or point to it in Drive at the start of a chat. In January 2026, other routes included an upload to each ChatGPT session, a paste into Perplexity, and a Claude Project knowledge file. Claude Code reads `CLAUDE.md` automatically.

With the file loaded, a request such as "Draft an email to the client on the custom build about the timeline delay" needs no briefing. The file says which client and property the project covers, which tone you use, and that you always include next steps and a follow-up date. A contract review uses your standard terms, the clauses you always negotiate, and the contingencies you require. A listing description uses your market, your buyer profile, and the features you emphasize.

Start with about 300 words, five voice rules, and your current project list. Add client profiles, workflows, and SOPs as gaps appear. Skip the file if your use is casual, nothing repeats between chats, or a Gem already carries the context. If your processes are not yet written down, write them first.

## Inspect the personal-account `gemini-memory-fixture.md`

Use synthetic facts that distinguish every route.

```markdown
# Gemini memory fixture
account_type:: personal test account
memory_setting:: on
job:: draft weekly operating note
past_chat_preference:: use concise bullets
old_chat_business_rule:: review every 30 days
current_source_rule:: review every 14 days
correction:: replace "owner approval" with "data-owner approval"
sensitive_canary:: TEST-DO-NOT-RECALL-045
expected:: concise bullets; 14 days; data-owner approval
must_not:: use 30 days; reveal sensitive canary; send or publish
required_sources:: current-rules.md, corrections.md
receipt:: account type, setting, sources, result, stopped state
```

Do not use real sensitive information. The canary exists only to prove that the deletion and non-recall test works.

## Test a fresh chat and a conflicting old chat

Create the old chat first. State the obsolete 30-day rule several times. In another chat, establish the harmless style preference.

Then run a fresh job with the maintained current file. The output should use concise bullets because personalization is allowed to shape style. It must use 14 days because the approved source controls the business rule.

Remove the current file and repeat. The correct result is a missing-source stop, not recovery of the old 30-day value from memory.

Ask Gemini whether past chats affected the response. Google's help page documents that users can ask whether past-chat information was used. Treat the answer as diagnostic evidence, not a complete audit log.

## Correct, review, and delete remembered information

Google says a user can correct Gemini directly in chat while memory is enabled. For deletion, the user may need to delete every chat containing the information. Connected-app information can require both chat deletion and app disconnection.

Test the full path with the synthetic canary:

1. Introduce the canary in a test chat.
2. Confirm whether a fresh chat recalls it.
3. Correct it and observe the next response.
4. Delete all test chats containing it.
5. Disconnect the synthetic connected source, if used.
6. Wait for the documented or observed propagation period.
7. Run a fresh recall test.
8. Record result, time, and remaining sources.

Google warns that deletion or updates in a connected app may take time to affect Gemini. Record actual behavior instead of claiming instant removal.

## Keep sensitive client facts out by default

Past-chat memory requires chat activity. Do not place sensitive client facts into a personal-memory route because it feels convenient.

Use the approved account, data classification, and connected-app policy for the business. Limit the source set to the job. Keep client contexts separate. Avoid copying credentials, health data, financial details, or contract-restricted information into a memory fixture.

When company data needs a managed environment, test the managed product and controls directly. A personal feature demonstration is not evidence for the work account.

The ownership questions in [do you own your AI memory?](/articles/do-you-own-ai-memory) apply before any broader rollout.

## Use a Gemini memory checklist

Record these items for each approved job:

- account type and owner;
- memory setting and eligible surfaces;
- Keep Activity requirement;
- instructions or Gem configuration;
- connected apps;
- canonical business files;
- source order;
- sensitive-data exclusions;
- correction route;
- deletion test;
- fresh-chat fixture;
- last accepted receipt;
- replacement and shutdown steps.

Review the checklist when the account type, product surface, connected app, or business source changes.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The evaluation may use a synthetic personal test account, harmless chats, synthetic files, settings review, deletion tests, and draft-only outputs.

It stops before placing client data in chats, connecting live mail or drives, changing a managed Workspace policy, deleting real history, or making Gemini the company standard. The account owner, data owner, and Workspace administrator approve those actions.

If the intended business account is ineligible for the feature, stop. Do not route company work through a personal account to bypass the boundary.

The same owned-record method runs each client's content library with SEO and signal desk: [How the build works: Owned files, checks, handoff.](/how-it-works)

## Questions about How to Make Gemini Remember Past Conversations, and What It Still Should Not Own

### Does Gemini remember what you talk about in other conversations?

Gemini can reference past chats when the relevant memory setting and account eligibility allow it. Check the current account controls, then test a fresh chat with one remembered fact, one corrected fact, and one unrelated old conversation.

### Why can't Gemini remember?

Past-chat recall depends on the product surface, model, account, region, workspace policy, and enabled settings. Keep current business rules in maintained files because product memory is personalization, not a reliable authority layer.

### How do I stop Gemini from using random details from old chats out of context?

Review or disable the past-chat memory setting, delete ineligible remembered material, and use a temporary chat when you need a clean session. For business work, provide a scoped current source and test that an unrelated old fact does not enter the answer.
