# Build Looker Studio SEO dashboards that refresh themselves for each audience.

On the first Monday of each month, an SEO manager exports Search Console data and pulls GA4 numbers. Rank data comes from a third tool, and all of it goes into slides by hand. The report takes most of a day. By the time the CEO reads it, the numbers are a week old.

Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, turns raw SEO data into dashboards that stakeholders can read. Google renamed the product in October 2022. Dashboards pull data on a schedule, show trends at a glance, and remove the monthly copy-and-paste. This guide shows how to connect the sources, choose the metrics, build a dashboard for each audience, and automate delivery.

## Know what Looker Studio gives you

Looker Studio has six advantages over a spreadsheet report:

- **Automation.** Dashboards pull data from connected sources. Nobody exports or pastes.
- **Freshness.** Data refreshes on a schedule. The GA4 connector defaults to a 12-hour refresh.
- **Visual clarity.** Charts show trends faster than tables of numbers.
- **Custom views.** You can build an executive overview and a technical deep dive from the same data.
- **Cost.** Looker Studio is free for unlimited reports and viewers. Tableau and Power BI charge per user to share dashboards. A paid tier, Looker Studio Pro, adds team management features.
- **Connectors.** Native connectors cover Google Analytics, Search Console, Sheets, and BigQuery. Partner connectors cover Ahrefs, Semrush, and other SEO tools.

## Bring an approved dashboard design

Start with the audience questions, metric definitions, owners, alert rules, and acceptance checks in the [dashboard requirements guide](/articles/building-seo-dashboard-guide). This page implements that design in Looker Studio. Keep the chosen traffic, ranking, engagement, conversion, and technical views, rather than choosing metrics again during connector setup.

Record the source filters and refresh delays before you build. The Search Console performance connector supplies search performance, not indexing, crawl, or Core Web Vitals data. Pull those separately as described below. A chart cannot recover fields its connector does not expose.

## Connect the data sources

### Search Console

1. In Looker Studio, select Create, then Data source.
2. Select Search Console from the Google connectors.
3. Choose the property and the table: Site Impression for site-level query metrics, or URL Impression when you need page-level detail.
4. Authorize and connect.

The connector gives the dimensions query, page, country, device, and date. It gives the metrics impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position.

Know three limits. Search Console keeps 16 months of data. Data lags by about two days. The API behind the connector caps rows per day and hides anonymized queries, so large sites see incomplete query lists.

To keep data past 16 months without API row caps, turn on the Search Console bulk export to BigQuery. Google launched it in February 2023. The export starts on the day you set it up and still omits anonymized queries. Then connect Looker Studio to BigQuery. The [Search Console API guide for data teams](/articles/search-console-api-data-teams) covers both routes.

For technical data that the connector lacks:

- Pull indexing status with the URL Inspection API. As of September 2026, its quota is 2,000 calls per property per day. Write the results to Sheets or BigQuery.
- Pull Core Web Vitals field data from the Chrome UX Report (CrUX) API or its public BigQuery dataset.

### Google Analytics 4

1. Select Create, Data source, then Google Analytics.
2. Select the GA4 property.
3. Authorize and connect.

Key dimensions are landing page, session source and medium, device category, country, and date. Key metrics are sessions, users, bounce rate, average engagement time, and key events.

To keep only organic traffic, add a filter: `Session default channel group` equals `Organic Search`. The [GA4 SEO reports guide](/articles/ga4-seo-reports-guide) covers the reports you can mirror.

### Third-party SEO tools

Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz need a partner connector, such as Supermetrics or Windsor.ai, or your own API integration. Partner connectors charge by plan and source count.

To connect Ahrefs through Supermetrics:

1. Add the Supermetrics connector for Looker Studio.
2. Authorize your Ahrefs account.
3. Select the queries: rankings, backlinks, or keywords.
4. Set a daily refresh.

To build it yourself, call the Ahrefs or Semrush API on a schedule. Write the results to Google Sheets, and connect Looker Studio to the sheet.

### Google Sheets

Sheets fills three gaps: manual data, custom calculations, and tools with no connector.

1. Put the data in a Google Sheet.
2. In Looker Studio, select Create, Data source, then Google Sheets.
3. Select the sheet and the range.

Example: export rankings from SE Ranking or AccuRanker as CSV each week, import them to Sheets, and connect the sheet to the dashboard. Without a paid connector, you can do the same with Search Console and the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. It is manual but costs nothing.

## Build a dashboard for each audience

Each dashboard answers the questions one audience asks. The [SEO reporting for stakeholders guide](/articles/seo-reporting-for-stakeholders) covers what each audience needs to decide.

### Executive dashboard

The audience is the C-suite and other non-technical stakeholders. They ask three questions: Is organic traffic growing? What does SEO return? How does this period compare with the last month, quarter, and year?

| Section | Chart | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Scorecards | Organic sessions this month, growth against last month, organic key events, organic conversion rate |
| Traffic trend | Line chart | Date on the x-axis (daily or weekly), organic sessions on the y-axis, last 12 months, previous year as comparison |
| Top landing pages | Table | Landing page, organic sessions, bounce rate, key events; sorted by sessions; top 10 |
| Device split | Pie chart | Desktop, mobile, tablet by organic sessions |

Keep it to one page with five to seven key numbers. Put trends on this page and leave detail to the performance dashboard.

### Performance dashboard

The audience is marketing managers and SEO specialists. They ask which keywords are moving, where traffic is won or lost, and which content underperforms.

| Section | Chart | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword rankings | Table | Keyword, impressions, clicks, CTR, position, position change; top 20 by impressions; sorted by position change |
| Landing pages | Table | Page, clicks, impressions, CTR, position; pages with more than 1,000 impressions; sorted by clicks |
| Query growth | Bar chart | Weekly buckets, clicks, top 10 queries by click growth |
| Position distribution | Bar chart | Keyword counts in positions 1 to 3, 4 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 50, and 51 to 100; this month against last month |

### Technical dashboard

The audience is developers and technical SEO specialists. They ask whether errors block indexing and how Core Web Vitals trend.

| Section | Chart | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indexing errors | Table of URL, error type, and date found, newest first | URL Inspection API export, or a Page indexing report export |
| Core Web Vitals | Line chart of LCP, INP, and CLS with good, needs-improvement, and poor bands | CrUX API or BigQuery |
| Indexing status | Bar chart of indexed, excluded, and error page counts | Page indexing export in Sheets |

## Add controls and calculations

### Date range and filter controls

A date range control lets viewers switch periods without editing the report.

1. Select Add a control, then Date range control.
2. Place it at the top of the page.
3. Apply it to every chart on the page.

A filter control segments the data. For example, add a drop-down for device category so a viewer can see mobile alone.

### Calculated fields

A calculated field creates a custom metric. For organic conversion rate:

```text
SUM(Organic Key Events) / SUM(Organic Sessions)
```

1. Edit the data source.
2. Select Add a field, then Create calculated field.
3. Enter the formula.
4. Set the type to percent, and use the field in charts.

For click share or impression share, do not write a formula that mixes a row value with a total. Use the chart's comparison calculation option, Percent of total, instead. For a CTR gap against a benchmark, keep the benchmark CTR in Sheets, blend it in, and subtract.

For SEO return on investment, record SEO costs in Sheets and blend them with GA4 revenue:

```text
(SUM(Organic Revenue) - SUM(SEO Cost)) / SUM(SEO Cost)
```

### Conditional formatting

Color highlights anomalies. For position change:

- green when a keyword improved by three or more places;
- red when it dropped by three or more;
- grey for smaller changes.

Select the table, open the Style tab, and add conditional formatting rules on the position change field.

### Blended data

A blend joins metrics from two sources on a shared key.

1. Select the chart.
2. Select Blend data.
3. Add the second source.
4. Set the join key, such as landing page URL.
5. Select the metrics from each source.

### Work a Search Console and GA4 join

Here is an illustrative implementation sample with fictional rows. Use the Search Console URL Impression table, filtered to web search. Use GA4 sessions with `Session source = google` and `Session medium = organic`. Joining all Organic Search sessions would mix other search engines into the comparison.

Normalize both landing-page fields to a reviewed URL key. Search Console has full URLs; GA4 may have paths and query strings. Add the known hostname when needed. Remove tracking parameters only under a written rule, and preserve parameters that change the content. Keep trailing-slash and canonical differences in the reconciliation log.

Aggregate each source to one row per date and normalized URL before blending. If you include device or country, use those dimensions on both sides and add them to the join keys. Do not add query to a page-level join: several query rows can repeat the same GA4 page sessions.

| Date | URL key | Search Console clicks | GA4 Google organic sessions | GA4 leads |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|
| 2026-09-14 | /guides/email-automation | 120 | 110 | 6 |
| 2026-09-15 | /guides/email-automation | 150 | 138 | 8 |
| Total | Same reviewed URL | 270 | 248 | 14 |

Use a left outer join from the Search Console table on `date` and `URL key`. Save GA4-only unmatched rows separately rather than losing them in the analysis. Apply the same finalized date window to both tables. Search Console daily boundaries use Pacific time; GA4 uses the property time zone. For an exact day alignment, aggregate exported event data to the agreed zone. Otherwise disclose the boundary mismatch and compare longer finalized windows.

Reconcile the blend with each source export: this sample must still show 270 clicks, 248 sessions, and 14 leads. The counts need not match each other. [Google explains click/session differences](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/google-analytics-search-console). A duplicated join key that doubles sessions is a blend failure, not SEO growth.

[Google’s blend documentation](https://docs.cloud.google.com/looker/docs/studio/how-blends-work-in-looker-studio) limits a blend to five tables and equality joins. Rows aggregate at the selected dimensions before joining. Use [the advanced blend checks](https://docs.cloud.google.com/looker/docs/studio/blending-tips-and-advanced-concepts) to inspect cardinality and filtering. Pre-aggregate in BigQuery when the connector grain or date rules cannot express the required join.

Competitor data works the same way. Pull competitor rankings through the Ahrefs or Semrush API into Sheets, then blend. It needs a custom script or a paid connector.

## Automate delivery

### Scheduled email

1. Open the report and select Share, then Schedule delivery.
2. Add recipients.
3. Choose the frequency and the time.
4. Choose the pages to include.

Recipients receive the report as a PDF. Send executive reports monthly and performance reports weekly. Add two or three lines in the email that name the key changes.

Match the data refresh to the use: daily for monitoring, weekly for client reports, monthly for executive summaries. Set data freshness on each data source.

### Embedded reports

Embed a report in a client portal or internal wiki for constant access.

1. Select File, then Embed report, and turn on embedding.
2. Copy the iframe code.
3. Paste it into the portal page.

Set access to either anyone with the link, or named Google accounts only. For client data, use named accounts.

For client-facing reports, add your logo and use a custom theme with your brand colors.

## Design for fast reading

- **Hierarchy.** Put the most important numbers at the top left. Readers scan left to right, top to bottom.
- **Color.** Use brand colors. Keep red and green for negative and positive change only.
- **Chart count.** Five to eight charts per page at most.
- **Labels.** Add a text box to each section that says what it shows. Do not assume viewers know the metrics.
- **Mobile.** Preview the report on a phone and fix what you cannot read.
- **Speed.** Many blends and complex calculated fields slow the report. Pre-aggregate in BigQuery or Sheets when a page loads slowly.
