# Choose content length by search intent instead of a word-count target.

A content lead sets a rule: every article must reach 2,000 words. The writers pad definitions with history sections. A glossary page on "bounce rate" grows to 2,100 words and drops from position 3 to position 9, because the reader wanted one paragraph.

The belief that longer content ranks better persists despite mixed evidence. Some queries reward a 5,000-word guide. Others favor an 800-word answer. Length is not a ranking factor. Search intent satisfaction is. This guide shows when long content wins, when short content is enough, and how to set a length for each query from the results page.

## Define the three lengths

These ranges help planning. They are not rules.

| Format | Length | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Short form | 300 to 1,200 words | Answers one specific question |
| Mid form | 1,200 to 2,500 words | Gives depth without full coverage |
| Long form | 2,500 to 10,000 words or more | Covers a topic completely |

A 900-word article can be complete if the topic needs no more. A 6,000-word article can be thin if it repeats itself.

## Read what the research says

Several studies correlate length with rankings. Correlation does not prove cause.

**Google's own guidance.** Google's documentation on helpful content asks writers whether they write to a particular word count because they heard that Google prefers one. Google's answer, in the same document, is that it does not.

**Backlinko, 2020, 11.8 million results.** The study reported that the average first-page Google result had 1,447 words. Longer pages tend to cover more subtopics, meet more sub-intents, and earn more links. Those traits, not the word count, are the likely cause of the correlation.

**Backlinko with BuzzSumo, 2019, 912 million blog posts.** Long-form content, over 3,000 words, earned about 77 percent more referring domains than posts under 1,000 words. The study measured links, not rankings, and one site's audience can differ from the average.

Content that meets the intent ranks, whether it takes 500 words or 5,000. Word count predicts little on its own.

## Know when long-form content wins

Long content fits queries that need complete coverage. The [search intent explainer](/articles/search-intent-explained) defines the intent types used below.

### Broad informational queries

Examples:

- "How to start a podcast" needs steps, equipment, hosting, and promotion.
- "SEO guide for beginners" needs keyword research, on-page work, technical SEO, content, and links.
- "Email marketing best practices" needs strategy, tools, templates, and metrics.

Long content wins here for four reasons. It meets several sub-intents in one page. It keeps readers on the page longer. It becomes the reference others use. It earns links, because it is complete enough to cite. Target 2,500 to 5,000 words.

Three signals on the results page point to this format:

- The top three results average 3,000 words or more.
- Featured snippets come from long articles.
- Many People Also Ask boxes appear, which marks a complex topic.

### Commercial investigation queries

Examples: "Best CRM software for small business", "Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison", "Top email marketing tools".

Readers expect detailed comparisons of 10 to 20 products, with feature breakdowns, pricing tables, and pros and cons. A longer, well-organized page builds purchase confidence. Target 3,000 to 6,000 words.

The results page shows listicles or comparison tables near the top. Ads appear, which signals commercial intent. Readers often spend five minutes or more on the page.

### Pillar pages

A pillar page covers a topic broadly and links to detailed articles on each subtopic.

- A complete guide to content marketing links to articles on strategy, creation, distribution, and analytics.
- A technical SEO guide links to articles on crawl budget, site speed, structured data, and `hreflang`.

Pillar pages cover breadth, not depth. The hub-and-spoke links spread authority across the cluster and build topical authority. Target 5,000 to 10,000 words. The [topical authority strategy guide](/articles/topical-authority-content-strategy) covers how to plan the spokes.

## Know when short-form content wins

Short content wins when the reader wants a direct answer.

### Quick-answer queries

Examples: "What is bounce rate", "How to reset iPhone", "Who won the 2024 Super Bowl".

The reader wants the answer now, not an essay. Google shows concise answers in featured snippets. Extra length slows a reader who came for speed. Target 300 to 800 words.

The results page shows a featured snippet or People Also Ask boxes at the top. The top results are concise, often 500 to 1,000 words. Readers leave soon after they get the answer, and that is a success, not a failure.

### Transactional queries

Examples:

- a product page for "Buy Nike Air Max 90";
- a service page for "Emergency plumber in Seattle";
- a sign-up page for "Ahrefs free trial".

The reader wants product details and a way to buy. Two thousand words of filler can lower conversion. Pages built for the transaction, with structured data and a clear call to action, fit this intent. Target 300 to 1,000 words.

The top results are product or service pages, not blog posts. Ads dominate. For local services, a local pack appears.

### News and timely content

Examples: a product launch announcement, "Google algorithm update February 2026", "Stock market news today".

Readers want facts fast. Freshness outweighs depth. Short pieces publish sooner and catch the traffic spike. Target 400 to 1,200 words.

A Top Stories carousel appears. Results show publication dates. The top results change daily.

## Set the length for a query in three steps

Match length to intent, not to a house rule.

### Step 1: read the top five results

Search the target keyword and review the top five results for three things:

- **Word count.** Use a word counter, or estimate that 300 words fills one to two desktop screens.
- **Format.** Listicle, how-to guide, comparison, definition, or product page.
- **Depth.** An overview or complete coverage.

Example: for "How to write a business plan", the top five average 3,200 words. They use a how-to format with 10 to 15 sections and include templates and examples. The plan: write 3,000 to 3,500 words, with detailed sections and a downloadable template. The [competitor content analysis guide](/articles/competitor-content-analysis) shows how to record this review in a repeatable way.

### Step 2: find the gaps

Look for subtopics the competitors miss. A real gap justifies more length.

In the business plan example, competitors cover plan structure but skip three things:

- industry-specific examples, such as a tech startup compared with a restaurant;
- common mistakes;
- tools that help you build the plan.

Those sections add 800 to 1,200 words and make the page different from the rest.

### Step 3: test and measure

Publish, then wait three to six months for rankings to settle. Track five measures:

- the ranking position for the target keyword;
- organic traffic to the page;
- time on page;
- bounce rate or engagement rate;
- links earned.

If the page underperforms, compare it with the pages above it and find the gaps. Add 500 to 1,000 words on the missing subtopics. Refresh statistics, examples, and old sections. Expand only when the competitors rank with longer content and your page lacks depth. Never add filler.

If the page beats expectations, keep the length. Update it on a schedule to hold the ranking, and link to it from new articles. The [content refresh strategy guide](/articles/content-refresh-strategy-guide) sets that schedule.

## Choose depth or breadth

Depth is complete coverage of a narrow topic. An example is a 7,000-word guide to email deliverability that covers authentication, sender reputation, content factors, and monitoring tools.

Breadth is short coverage of many related topics. An example is a 4,000-word email marketing guide with brief sections on strategy, tools, templates, deliverability, and analytics.

| Choose depth for | Choose breadth for |
|---|---|
| Specific queries on niche subtopics | Broad queries with many sub-intents |
| Technical readers who expect expertise | Pillar pages that link to detailed articles |
| Low-competition topics you can own | Topics where readers need an overview first |

## Avoid five length mistakes

**Arbitrary word counts.** A 2,000-word rule produces filler. Write what the topic needs.

**Filler sections.** "History of [topic]" and "Why [topic] matters" often add words without value. Include them only when the intent calls for them.

**Repetition.** The same idea said three ways inflates length without information. Favor density.

**Ignoring the competition.** If the top five average 1,200 words and you publish 500, you start at a disadvantage. Match or exceed their depth. Short content rarely ranks for competitive keywords unless the query wants a definition or a quick how-to.

**Length over readability.** A 10,000-word page that is hard to read loses to a 3,000-word page with clear structure, visuals, and examples.

Featured snippets favor concise answers, often 40 to 60 words. A long article can still win the snippet if it holds a short, well-formatted answer under a clear heading. The [featured snippet optimization guide](/articles/featured-snippet-optimization) shows the formats.

## Plan production time

Long content takes longer to produce. Speed matters when you chase a trend or build topical authority at scale. Approximate times for research, writing, and editing:

| Length | Time |
|---|---|
| 500 words | 2 to 4 hours |
| 1,500 words | 4 to 6 hours |
| 3,000 words | 8 to 12 hours |
| 6,000 words | 16 to 24 hours |

Four practices raise output:

- **Freelance writers or agencies.** Cost rises with quality and length.
- **Batches.** Write five to ten articles in one focused sprint instead of across several weeks.
- **Expansion of winners.** Grow a strong 1,000-word article into a 3,000-word guide with cases, examples, and subtopics.
- **Templates.** Standardize the structure, for example introduction, problem, solution, steps, and examples.

## Plan long pieces for links

Long content earns more links for three reasons. Complete resources get cited in research, posts, and industry articles. Long pieces often hold original data or frameworks that others reference. Depth signals expertise and raises trust.

Plan two or three long cornerstone articles each quarter with links as the goal. Promote each one to journalists, bloggers, and industry publications.

## Adjust for your industry

Norms differ by industry and audience:

| Industry | Typical length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Healthcare and legal | 2,000 to 4,000 words | Readers expect thorough, authoritative information |
| News and entertainment | 400 to 1,200 words | Readers want quick updates |
| SaaS and technology | 1,500 to 3,000 words | Readers need explanations, use cases, and setup guides |
| Ecommerce product pages | 300 to 800 words | Details, specifications, and reviews, not essays |
| Finance and B2B | 2,500 to 5,000 words | Complex topics need detailed explanation and cases |

Treat the table as a starting point. The results page for your query overrides it.
