# Run local SEO for every location so customers find you in the map pack.

A customer searches "emergency plumber" at 9 p.m. Three businesses appear on the map. Yours is not one of them, because the Business Profile still lists hours from two years ago and has four reviews.

Local SEO puts a business in the map pack, the local results, and "near me" searches. For a business with a storefront, a service area, or a regional presence, local rankings decide whether the customer calls you or a competitor. Many marketing managers treat it as a one-time Google Business Profile setup. This guide gives you a program instead: priorities, owners, a review process, measurement, and multi-location coordination.

## Know what local search is worth

Local intent is a large share of search. An often-repeated industry figure puts it at 46 percent of Google searches. No primary source for that number is public, so treat it as an indicator, not a measurement. Queries such as "coffee shop", "plumber near me", and "dentist in [city]" all trigger local results above the organic listings.

The local pack is the map with three business listings. It takes the largest share of clicks for local queries. One widely cited click study put the share at 33 percent; results vary by query and study.

Local SEO suits a marketing manager's budget for four reasons:

- **No per-click cost.** After setup, local leads cost staff time, not ad spend.
- **High intent.** A person who searches "emergency plumber" or "Italian restaurant open now" is ready to act.
- **Durable position.** Once you hold a local ranking, it costs less to keep it than a competitor pays to take it.
- **Repeatable process.** A standard process scales across dozens or hundreds of locations.

Most practitioners rank Google Business Profile work as the strongest local factor: completeness, reviews, and activity. Start there. Expect first gains in map pack visibility within one to three months. A top-three position usually takes four to six months of consistent work.

## Complete and maintain the Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile (GBP), formerly Google My Business, is the foundation. Each physical location needs its own profile. Do not list several addresses on one profile, because Google can suspend it. The [Google Business Profile optimization guide](/articles/google-business-profile-optimization) covers each field in more depth.

### Fill every field

Google favors complete profiles. Use this checklist:

- **Business name.** Use the real name. Write "Joe's Pizza", not "Joe's Pizza Best New York Style Pizza Downtown".
- **Category.** Choose the most specific primary category. Add three to five secondary categories that describe real offerings.
- **Address.** Use the same name, address, and phone (NAP) as every other listing. An inconsistent NAP confuses Google and harms rankings.
- **Phone number.** Use a local number, not a toll-free number. A local number signals location relevance.
- **Website URL.** Link to the homepage or to the location landing page.
- **Hours.** Update them for holidays. Mark the location temporarily closed when it is.
- **Description.** Use up to 750 characters on services, location, and differences from competitors. Write natural language, not a keyword list.
- **Attributes.** Select every attribute that applies, such as wheelchair access, outdoor seating, or Wi-Fi.

A service-area business, such as a plumber or contractor, can hide its address. Set the service areas in the GBP settings instead.

### Add photos and video

In 2016, Google stated that businesses with photos receive 42 percent more requests for driving directions and 35 percent more website clicks. Google no longer shows these figures in its help pages, so treat them as dated.

- Upload ten or more high-quality photos: exterior, interior, products, and team.
- Add new photos every month to show active management.
- Give files descriptive names before upload, such as `joe-pizza-interior-dining.jpg`.
- Show customers with your products or services, with their permission.

For video, add a 30-second introduction to what you offer and why customers choose you. Behind-the-scenes clips of the team or the process also work.

### Publish Google Posts

Google Posts appear on the profile and show that someone manages it. There are three types:

- **Updates** for new products, services, or announcements.
- **Events** for sales, classes, or special dates.
- **Offers** for limited-time promotions with a call to action.

Post at least once a week; two or three times a week is better. Add an image to each post. Add a button such as "Learn more", "Call now", or "Book". Posts accept up to 1,500 characters, but shorter posts read better.

### Answer common questions where Google reads them

Google discontinued the Business Profile Q&A API on November 3, 2025, and is removing the public questions and answers section from profiles. Google Maps now answers more customer questions with AI-generated summaries. Put your answers in places you control:

- List five to ten common customer questions, and write a plain answer to each.
- Add those answers to the location page and to the profile description.
- Write answers in plain language that names your services. Example: "We specialize in residential plumbing, drain cleaning, and emergency repairs."
- If your profile still shows a questions and answers section, answer each new question within 24 hours. Check it every week for spam.

If you find a duplicate profile for a location, claim it. Then ask Google Business Profile support to remove it, and keep the primary profile active.

## Ask for reviews and answer every one

Practitioner surveys rank reviews among the strongest local ranking factors after the profile itself. More reviews bring more visibility, and more visibility brings more reviews.

### Build a review request process

- Email each customer two or three days after purchase with a review request.
- Include a direct link to your Google review form. Shorten it.
- Train staff to ask customers in person.
- Use SMS for service businesses, because text messages get read more often than email.

Ask every customer, not only the happy ones. Google prohibits selective requests for positive reviews. Never offer a discount or reward for a review. Google prohibits incentivized reviews and can remove reviews when it detects them.

```text
Subject: How was your experience at [Business Name]?
Hi [Name],
Thank you for choosing [Business Name]. We want to hear about your experience.
Could you take two minutes to leave a review? Your feedback helps us improve and helps others find us.
[Direct Google review link]
[Your Name]
```

Aim for one or two new reviews a week. A sudden spike, such as 20 reviews in one day, looks suspicious.

### Respond with a standard protocol

A response to each review, positive or negative, shows active management and supports rankings.

For a positive review, thank the reviewer by name and mention a detail from the review. Invite them back. Keep it under 100 words.

```text
Thank you, Sarah. We are glad you enjoyed the margherita pizza. Our dough recipe took 20 years to get right. We hope to see you again soon.
```

For a negative review, respond within 24 hours. Apologize without excuses. Offer to resolve it offline, and give contact details. Never argue in public.

```text
We are sorry your visit did not meet expectations, John. We want to make this right. Please contact us at [email] so we can resolve it directly.
```

Never ignore a negative review. An unanswered complaint looks worse than the complaint itself.

## Keep citations and NAP consistent

A citation is an online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Google uses citations to confirm that a business exists at its location.

### Cover the core platforms

Every business needs these listings:

- Google Business Profile
- Bing Places
- Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect)
- Yelp
- Facebook business page
- Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Then add the platforms for your industry:

| Industry | Platforms |
|---|---|
| Restaurants | Tripadvisor, OpenTable |
| Retail | Yellow Pages, Foursquare |
| Healthcare | Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc |
| Legal | Avvo, FindLaw, Justia |
| Home services | Angi (formerly Angie's List), HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack |

### Choose one NAP format and enforce it

The NAP must match exactly in every citation. These differences cause problems:

- "Joe's Pizza" and "Joe's Pizza LLC" (legal suffix added or removed)
- "123 Main St" and "123 Main Street" (abbreviation)
- "(555) 123-4567" and "555-123-4567" (format)

Choose one canonical format. Keep every citation in a spreadsheet. Audit the citations each quarter. When the address or phone changes, update every citation.

### Decide between manual work and a platform

Manual submission works for one location but does not scale. Four platforms handle citations at scale:

- **BrightLocal** automates directory submission and monitors NAP consistency, with per-location pricing.
- **Whitespark** combines a citation service with local rank tracking.
- **Moz Local** distributes listings to the major data aggregators, with per-location plans.
- **Yext** is an enterprise platform for multi-location brands and quotes custom pricing.

The pricing models differ: per-location subscriptions, per-order citation work, and custom enterprise quotes. Compare the current plans against your location count before you commit.

For five or more locations, a platform saves time and keeps the data consistent. For one location, manual submission to the core and industry platforms is enough.

## Build a page for each location

A location page ranks for "service + city" queries and supports the Business Profile.

Each page needs unique content, often 500 words or more:

- the services offered at this location;
- parking and public transit details;
- a description of the neighborhood;
- staff bios or team photos;
- hours;
- an embedded Google Map.

Add `LocalBusiness` structured data, or a more specific type such as `Restaurant`. Put this object in a `script` element of type `application/ld+json`:

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Restaurant",
  "name": "Joe's Pizza Downtown",
  "image": "https://example.com/downtown-location.jpg",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "123 Main St",
    "addressLocality": "Seattle",
    "addressRegion": "WA",
    "postalCode": "98101"
  },
  "telephone": "+1-206-555-1234",
  "openingHours": "Mo-Su 11:00-22:00"
}
```

Embed the map with the iframe code from Google Maps:

```html
<iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=..." width="600" height="450" loading="lazy"></iframe>
```

Link to each location page from the homepage, the footer, and the service pages. The [structured data implementation guide](/articles/structured-data-implementation) covers validation.

### Template pages for ten or more locations

A site with ten or more locations needs a template that balances consistency with unique content. A useful split is about 60 percent standard content and 40 percent unique content. Standard content covers services and company information. Unique content covers neighborhood details, photos, and staff.

Use a readable URL, such as `/locations/seattle/`. Avoid a dynamic URL such as `/location.php?id=47`. Give each location page a self-referencing canonical tag. Do not point it at a master location page.

## Earn local links

Links from community sites, local news, and regional organizations signal local relevance. Seven sources work for most businesses:

- **Local directories.** The chamber of commerce, business associations, and economic development groups.
- **Community sponsorships.** Youth sports teams, local events, and charities usually link to sponsors.
- **Local news.** Pitch local journalists on real news: an opening, a charity drive, or a milestone.
- **Local partnerships.** Partner with a complementary business. A gym and a smoothie shop can each link to the other.
- **Schools and universities.** Where education fits your business, offer a scholarship or a resource.
- **Local bloggers.** Offer reviews, features, or a place in gift guides.
- **Events.** Event sites link to sponsors and exhibitors at festivals and trade shows.

```text
Subject: Partnership with [local organization]
Hi [Name],
I am the marketing manager at [Business Name], a [description] that serves [city]. We want to support local organizations, and your work with [community, students, etc.] fits.
We could offer [specific value: member discounts, free workshops, donations] through a sponsorship or a joint project.
Would you be open to a conversation about it?
[Your Name]
```

The restaurant and local service playbook in [SEO for restaurants and local businesses](/articles/seo-restaurants-local-business) adds examples by business type.

## Measure the program every month

A marketing manager needs numbers that show what local SEO returns.

### Track five metric groups

**Business Profile performance.** Export these each month from the GBP performance report:

- views in Search and in Maps;
- website clicks;
- direction requests;
- phone calls.

**Local rankings.** Track "service + city" keywords in BrightLocal, Whitespark, or GeoRanker. Record the local pack position and the organic position. Also record the count of keywords in the top 3 and the top 10.

**Organic traffic by location.** In Google Analytics 4, filter landing pages by `/locations/`. Track sessions, engagement rate, and conversions for each location.

**Reviews.** Track total count, average rating, new reviews per month, and the share of reviews with a response.

**Citations.** Track the total count, the share of citations with the correct NAP, and any duplicates or errors.

### Build the monthly report

Build the report in Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio), Looker, or Tableau. The [Looker Studio SEO reporting guide](/articles/looker-studio-seo-reporting) shows the connectors and layout. Use three bands:

1. Top: key numbers, such as profile views, calls, and direction requests.
2. Middle: rankings, including local pack positions and keyword movement.
3. Bottom: organic sessions and conversions, such as form fills and purchases, by location.

Share it with stakeholders every month. The report is the case for continued investment.

## Coordinate ten or more locations

A multi-location business must balance central control with local detail.

| Central team owns | Each location owns |
|---|---|
| NAP format standard | Photos and video |
| Citation platform for all locations | Unique content on the location page |
| Review response templates | Local link building |
| Google Post content, adapted per location | Community involvement |
| Structured data templates | |

Four platforms support this model. Yext manages listings and monitors reviews. BrightLocal tracks citations and rankings per location. SOCi combines social media and local SEO management. ReviewTrackers collects reviews from every platform in one place.

Run the program on three cycles:

1. Every week, respond to reviews, centrally or per location depending on scale.
2. Every month, review each location profile for updates and new photos.
3. Every quarter, audit citations and correct NAP errors.

Local SEO and Google Ads work together. Local Services Ads and Maps ads give immediate visibility while the organic program builds.
