# Earn backlinks with research, tools, and outreach instead of link schemes.

A vendor offers fifty guest posts a month on sites with high authority scores. The links arrive. Rankings do not move, and a year later some of those sites are gone from the index.

Link buying, mass guest posts, and link exchanges no longer build rankings. Tactics that worked in 2015 now carry risk. Links that count today come from citable assets, from relationships with the people who write about your market, and from brand visibility. This guide covers which links to pursue, how to create the assets that earn them, how to run outreach, and who owns each part.

## Know why the old tactics stopped working

Google stopped counting links as simple votes long ago. Its link spam updates, such as the December 2022 update, use the SpamBrain system to neutralize unnatural links. Google can also issue a manual action for a pattern of unnatural links. Four tactics fail most often:

- **Link farms and private blog networks (PBNs).** Google deindexes these networks. A detected network can bring a manual action on the sites it links to.
- **Mass guest posting.** Sites that accept hundreds of guest posts with generic bios and keyword-rich anchors lose value. Google discounts those links or penalizes the pattern.
- **Link exchanges.** "I link to you, you link to me" does not scale. Google detects reciprocal patterns.
- **Low-quality directories.** Five hundred directory submissions do not move rankings. Google discounts or ignores most of those links.

The links that work come from authoritative, topically relevant sites. Media coverage, expert citations, resource pages, and organic mentions all qualify. A transactional link placement does not.

## Rank link types by value

Links carry different weight. Spend your effort from the top of this list down.

### Tier 1: editorial links from authoritative sites

An editorial link sits inside content because the author found your resource useful. It carries the most weight. Examples:

- A national newspaper article cites your research study.
- An industry publication uses your data in a trend piece.
- A university site links to your educational resource.
- A government agency cites your white paper.

These links share four traits. They sit in the body, not the sidebar or footer. The article topic matches your site. The anchor text is your brand or a plain description. The domain has high authority, often a Domain Rating (DR) of 60 or more in Ahrefs.

To earn them, create research, data, or tools, then show them to journalists, academics, and industry experts.

### Tier 2: resource pages and curated lists

A resource page collects useful links on one topic. Examples:

- A "Top 50 SEO tools" list includes your tool.
- A university department lists your course.
- An industry association features your guide in its member resources.

Good resource pages are permanent, not blog posts that sink over time. They focus on your niche. A person curates them.

To find them, search with operators such as `intitle:"resources" "your topic"`. Confirm that someone still maintains the page. Then pitch the specific gap your resource fills.

### Tier 3: brand mentions and citations

An unlinked mention names your brand or cites your content without a link. Examples:

- A blog names your company but does not link to it.
- A forum thread names your tool.
- A social post shows a screenshot of your content with no credit.

Before you ask for a link, confirm three things. The mention exists and loads. The site is not spam and fits your topic. A link would read naturally in that sentence.

To find mentions, set alerts in Ahrefs Alerts, Google Alerts, or Mention. Then ask for attribution.

### Tier 4: partnerships and sponsorships

A partnership with a complementary business, event, or community produces links in relevant places. Examples:

- An industry conference lists its sponsors with links.
- A partner SaaS product adds you to its integration directory.
- A nonprofit lists your brand on its supporters page.

The best partnerships benefit both sides, fit your niche, and last. Event sponsors often stay listed in past event archives. To start, list the events, communities, and businesses that serve your buyers. Offer a sponsorship, an integration, or a collaboration with real value to them.

## Create one asset worth citing

Most blog posts inform but do not earn citations. A linkable asset gives other writers data, a tool, or a framework they need to reference.

### Original research and data studies

Original research earns the strongest links. Journalists, bloggers, and industry sites cite studies to support their claims. An annual benchmark report in a niche can earn citations for years, because each new article on the topic needs a current number. Common formats:

- a survey of 1,000 or more professionals about trends;
- an analysis of 10,000 or more websites that shows a pattern;
- a benchmark report that compares performance across sectors.

Run a study in four steps:

1. Find a data gap in your industry: an open question or a missing benchmark.
2. Collect data through surveys, scraping, or analysis of public datasets.
3. Publish the findings with charts and tables.
4. Pitch the findings to journalists and industry publications.

Research costs time and money for collection, analysis, and design. The return is high when the data is new and the method is sound.

### Interactive tools and calculators

A free tool that solves one problem gets linked from tutorials, comparisons, and resource lists for years. Moz's Domain Authority checker, CoSchedule's Headline Analyzer, HubSpot's Website Grader, and the free version of Ahrefs' Backlink Checker all follow this pattern.

1. Find a common problem your buyers face, such as a return calculation or a competitor check.
2. Build a small tool that solves it.
3. Make it free, with no sign-up.
4. Show it to relevant blogs, forums, and communities.

Tools cost the most to build, because they need development time. Their links accumulate over time.

### Definitive guides and frameworks

A complete guide becomes the reference other writers cite, because it saves them the work of compiling the material. Backlinko's guide to Google's ranking factors and Moz's Beginner's Guide to SEO are two long-lived examples.

1. Choose a foundational topic in your niche.
2. Write the most complete resource on it, often 5,000 to 15,000 words.
3. Add visuals, examples, and steps the reader can act on.
4. Update it every year so it stays current.

The [content refresh strategy](/articles/content-refresh-strategy) covers the yearly update. A guide costs expert time more than money.

### Infographics and visual assets

An infographic turns complex information into a visual that other sites embed with a credit link. Strong formats include a step-by-step process, a statistical comparison, and a timeline. An effective infographic answers one question, uses data others want to cite, and ships with embed code.

1. Pick a high-interest topic that already has data.
2. Hire a designer for a professional result.
3. Provide embed code that includes a link to your page.
4. Show it to blogs and publications in your niche.

Design is the main cost, and it is the lowest of the four asset types. Results vary widely. Some infographics spread; most do not.

## Run outreach that earns coverage

An asset alone earns few links. Digital PR puts it in front of the people who write about your market. The [digital PR link-building guide](/articles/seo-digital-pr-link-building) goes deeper on campaigns.

The success rates in this section are planning assumptions from outreach practice, not guarantees. Track your own rates after the first fifty emails.

### Journalist and editor outreach

Journalists need sources, data, and expert quotes. Become a source they return to:

- **Answer source queries.** Reply to journalist requests on services such as HARO and SourceBottle. Cision renamed HARO to Connectively and shut it down in December 2024. Featured.com relaunched HARO in April 2025. Confirm that a service is active before you build a process on it.
- **Pitch original research.** Offer an industry journalist early, exclusive access to your study.
- **Tie expertise to news.** When major industry news breaks, offer commentary to the journalists who cover it.
- **Build relationships.** Follow the reporters on your beat on X. Respond to their work with substance.

An example pitch:

```text
Subject: Exclusive data on [trend] for [publication name]
Hi [Name],
I read your recent article on [topic]. We just finished a study of
[data points] and found [specific finding].
I can share the full dataset with you before public release next week.
Would it help an upcoming piece?
[Your name]
```

Expect a low reply rate, often 5 to 10 percent. One placement in a major publication can still produce 20 to 100 or more secondary links, as other writers cite the story.

### Broken link building

Broken link building finds dead links on relevant pages and offers your content as the replacement.

1. Find resource pages and lists in your niche.
2. Check their outbound links with Ahrefs or the Check My Links browser extension.
3. Confirm that a dead link covered the same topic as your content.
4. Email the site owner with your page as the replacement.

```text
Subject: Broken link on [page title]
Hi [Name],
Your guide on [topic] links to [broken resource], which now returns a 404 error.
I published a guide on [topic] that covers [specific details]. It could replace the dead link:
[Your URL]
[Your name]
```

Plan for 10 to 20 percent of these emails to convert when the replacement fits.

### Unlinked mention reclamation

Reclamation is the cheapest link you can earn. The site already chose to name you.

1. Set alerts in Ahrefs, Google Alerts, or Mention for your brand, product names, and key executives.
2. Review the mentions every week.
3. Keep the mentions that carry no link.
4. Ask for attribution.

```text
Subject: Question about [article title]
Hi [Name],
Thank you for mentioning [your brand] in your article on [topic].
Would you add a link to our site for readers who want more detail? The URL is [link].
[Your name]
```

Substantive mentions convert at 30 to 50 percent in many campaigns. A passing mention converts far less often.

### Guest contributions, few and strong

Guest posts still work at low volume: two or three authoritative sites per year, not fifty weak ones. Choose sites that meet four criteria:

- a DR of 50 or more;
- the same industry or an adjacent one;
- an engaged audience, visible in comments and shares;
- a low volume of guest posts, because 100 or more a month signals weak editorial standards.

Pitch an angle specific to that audience. Bring data, a case, or expert insight, not generic advice. Write at the standard of your best work, often 2,000 words or more. Use a natural anchor in the author bio or one contextual link.

Avoid any site that sells guest post placements. Paid placements without a `rel="sponsored"` or `nofollow` attribute violate Google's spam policies, and Google detects the marketplaces. If a vendor proposes them, treat it as one of the [SEO vendor red flags](/articles/seo-vendor-red-flags-executives).

## Assign an owner to each tactic

Link building fails most often because nobody owns it. Each tactic needs a named owner and a fixed rhythm.

| Tactic | Typical owner | Rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Original research | Content lead with a data analyst | One study per quarter or year |
| Tools and calculators | Product or engineering, with SEO input | Maintenance after launch |
| Journalist outreach | PR or communications | Query replies and one or two pitches each week |
| Broken link building | SEO specialist | One batch of prospects and emails each week |
| Mention reclamation | SEO specialist or marketing coordinator | Weekly review of the alert digest |
| Partnerships | Founder, partnerships, or marketing lead | One new conversation each week |

In a small business, one person may hold several rows. The table still helps: it shows which work stops when that person is busy.

## Measure quality, not volume

Track acquisition and its effect on rankings:

- **Referring domains.** Count unique linking domains each month in Ahrefs or Semrush.
- **Authority score.** Check DR or Moz Domain Authority each quarter. Growth is slow; a gain of 5 to 10 DR points in a year is strong.
- **Link quality.** Track the share of new links from sites with a DR of 50 or more.
- **Anchor text.** Keep most anchors branded or generic, as a rule of thumb 60 percent or more. A high share of exact-match anchors signals manipulation.
- **Rankings.** Track target keywords each week, and compare gains with the dates of new links.
- **Organic traffic.** This is the result the links exist to produce.

Expect two to four months from a new link to a visible ranking change. Crawl, index, and ranking cycles all add delay.

## Set a link target and a first-year plan

The number of links a page needs depends on the competition. A low-competition keyword can rank with 10 to 20 relevant links. A competitive one can need 100 to 500 or more from authoritative domains. To set your own target, count the referring domains of the top-ranking pages for your keyword. The [competitor SEO analysis guide](/articles/competitor-seo-analysis-marketing) shows how.

A new site starts with broken link building, mention reclamation, and one strong asset: a tool, a study, or a guide. Aim for 50 to 100 quality links in the first year, not 1,000 weak ones.

Use the disavow file only when you have clear evidence of spam or manipulative links that harm the site. Google ignores most low-quality links today. A spam attack or past PBN use justifies a disavow file. A weak link does not.

Social platforms mark most outbound links `nofollow`, so those links pass little or no ranking value. Social promotion still puts your content in front of writers, and some of them link to it from their own sites.
