# Use popups and interstitials to capture leads without losing mobile rankings.

A visitor on a phone taps your search result for "best running shoes." Before the article appears, a full-screen email form covers it. The visitor taps back and chooses the next result. Your email list grows a little. Your mobile rankings fall.

Popups and interstitials convert visitors into subscribers. They also frustrate users, and Google demotes mobile pages whose overlays block content. Some overlays are legitimate: cookie consent, age verification, and login for private content. This article shows which overlays hurt search, which are safe, and how to balance lead capture with the reader's first view of the page.

## Know what Google counts as intrusive

Google announced its intrusive interstitials signal in August 2016 and applied it from January 2017. It affects mobile pages whose content is hard to reach on the transition from a search result. The signal lowers rankings. It is not a manual action, and Search Console does not send a warning for it.

Google names three patterns as intrusive:

- A popup that covers the main content, right after the user arrives from search or while the user reads.
- A standalone interstitial page that the user must dismiss before the content appears.
- A layout where the part above the fold looks like an interstitial, and the real content sits below it.

Timing matters. An overlay that appears as soon as a user lands from search is the main target. An overlay that appears after the user scrolls or spends time on the page carries less risk. Google has not published exact timing rules.

## Know which overlays are exempt

Google lists three kinds of overlay that the signal does not affect when used responsibly:

1. Legal overlays: cookie consent that privacy law such as the GDPR requires, and age verification for restricted content such as alcohol or gambling.
2. Login dialogs for content that is not public, such as private email or content behind a paywall that Google does not index.
3. Banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space and are easy to dismiss.

Google does not define "reasonable." A common rule of thumb is a banner under about 15 percent of the screen height. That is a practitioner guideline, not a Google number.

The distinction is purpose. Overlays for the user's needs or a legal need pass. Overlays for business goals alone, such as email capture and promotions, cause the demotion when they block content.

## Rate each popup type by risk

| Type | Risk | Why | Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-screen popup on arrival | High | Blocks content on the transition from search | Do not use on mobile landing pages |
| Time-delayed popup | Medium | The user reads first, but a short delay still feels intrusive | Delay 30 seconds or more; combine with scroll depth |
| Scroll-triggered popup | Medium | The user shows interest first, but an early trigger still interrupts | Trigger at 75 percent scroll depth or 60 seconds on the page |
| Slide-in box | Low | Takes about 10 to 20 percent of the screen in a corner; does not block reading | Bottom corner, large close button, once per session |
| Sticky header or footer bar | Low | Stays out of the reading area if it is small | Keep under about 15 percent of screen height; add a close button |
| Exit-intent popup | Low | Appears as the user leaves, after the content was read | Desktop only |

### Full-screen popups on arrival

A full-screen email form in front of the article is the pattern Google targets. It lowers the page's mobile ranking, sends users back to the results, and makes the page feel hostile on a small screen.

### Exit-intent popups

An exit-intent popup appears when the cursor moves toward the tab bar or the back button. The user already reached the content, so it does not block access. It can convert well when the offer adds value. It works only on desktop, because phones have no cursor. Do not build a mobile imitation that fires on scroll speed or on a short timer right after arrival.

### Scroll-triggered and time-delayed popups

These wait for a sign of interest. They still frustrate users when they fire too early or too often. A popup at 10 percent scroll depth or after 5 seconds feels like an arrival popup. Some practitioners treat 10 to 15 seconds as the minimum delay, but Google has published no threshold.

A safer rule combines both conditions. Show the popup only after 50 percent scroll depth and 30 seconds on the page. Show it once per session at most.

### Slide-ins and sticky bars

A slide-in rises from a bottom corner and leaves the text readable. It converts less than a full overlay, but the reading experience stays intact. A sticky bar stays at the top or bottom of the screen. Keep it to about 50 to 80 pixels tall on mobile and 80 to 120 pixels on desktop. Add a close button, and hide the bar after the user has scrolled past a few sections.

## Keep Core Web Vitals healthy

Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint, LCP), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint, INP), and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift, CLS). INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Popups can hurt all three. The [Core Web Vitals developer guide](/articles/core-web-vitals-developer-guide) covers each metric in depth.

### Layout shift

An overlay with `position: fixed` sits on top of the page. It does not move the content under it, so it does not add to CLS. A banner inserted into the page flow does. When a promotion bar appears at the top after the page renders, it pushes the whole page down.

To prevent shifts:

- Build overlays with fixed or absolute positioning.
- Reserve space for any banner that sits in the page flow, before it loads.
- Do not insert content above content the user already sees.
- Make the close action remove the overlay without a reflow of the page.

### Loading

Popups with large images or video backgrounds compete with the main content for bandwidth. Compress popup images and serve WebP. Do not use video backgrounds in popups. Load popup assets after the main content has rendered.

### Responsiveness

Heavy popup scripts that run at page load block the main thread. The page then responds slowly to the first taps and clicks, which hurts INP. Load popup scripts with `async` or `defer`. Load the popup code only when a trigger condition is close, such as a scroll past 50 percent. Prefer light scripts over third-party tools that inject large bundles.

## Build popups that respect the reader

### Cap the frequency

A popup that returns after the user closed it damages trust. Show a popup once per session at most. Record the dismissal in a cookie or in `localStorage`. Suppress the popup for 7 to 30 days for a returning visitor who closed it. Never show it again to a user who already subscribed or bought.

### Make it easy to close

- Put the close button in the top-right corner, where users expect it.
- Make the close icon at least 24 by 24 pixels on desktop.
- Give the close button a touch target of at least 44 by 44 pixels on mobile.
- Let a click or tap outside the popup close it.
- Let the Esc key close it on desktop.
- Keep the close button visible without a scroll inside the popup.

### Design for small screens first

Overlays feel more intrusive on a phone. On mobile, keep a popup under 50 to 60 percent of the screen height. Test it on several screen sizes and in both orientations. Do not allow horizontal scrolling inside it. Consider a slide-in or a bar instead of a popup on mobile. The [mobile-first design guide](/articles/mobile-first-design-seo) covers the rest of the small-screen layout.

## Capture leads without overlays on arrival

These methods collect emails without the demotion risk:

- Content upgrades. Offer a checklist, template, or PDF related to the article. Place the signup form inside the content, not in an overlay.
- A slide-in at 75 percent scroll depth. A reader who reached three-quarters of the article has shown interest.
- Exit-intent on desktop only.
- A confirmation overlay after a completed action, such as a purchase or a signup. It blocks nothing the user came for.
- A small sticky bar at the bottom of the mobile screen that announces the offer and can be dismissed.

## Test and measure the trade-off

Track the popup and the page together:

- Popup conversion rate: signups, clicks, and form completions.
- Engagement rate and time on page, with and without the popup.
- Exit rate after a dismissal.
- LCP, INP, and CLS for the pages that show the popup.
- Organic traffic to those pages, split by mobile and desktop.

Test one variable at a time:

- The popup type: full overlay, slide-in, or bar.
- The trigger: time, scroll, or exit-intent.
- The frequency: once per session or once per week.
- The copy and the design.

Change only one of these in each test. The [SEO A/B testing guide](/articles/seo-ab-testing-methods) explains how to test page changes without confusing Google.

Watch for a demotion after each popup change. A sudden organic traffic drop after a popup release is the main warning, because Search Console has no interstitial report. Split the traffic by device. A drop on mobile only points at the overlay. Search Console retired its Mobile Usability report in December 2023, so use Lighthouse and real devices to check the mobile view. The [above-the-fold UX guide](/articles/ux-seo-above-fold-optimization) shows how to review that first screen.

## Choose tools that support the safe patterns

Popup tools such as OptinMonster, Sumo, Poptin, and ConvertBox offer scroll triggers, exit-intent, time delays, frequency caps, and device rules. Confirm that each rule you need exists before you buy. A custom build gives full control over timing, frequency, and script weight.

Avoid generic plugins that default to a full-screen overlay on arrival and offer few settings. Whatever the tool, the defaults are your responsibility. Check the mobile behavior of each popup on a real phone, from a real search result, before release.
