# Design an internal link architecture that gets every important page crawled.

A product team launches 300 new product pages. The pages are in the sitemap, but no category page or article links to them. Six weeks later, Search Console lists most of them as "Discovered - currently not indexed."

Internal links tell Google which pages exist and which pages matter. Each link passes a share of PageRank from one page to another, so the link structure decides where authority collects. Many developers treat internal links as an editorial detail. They are a structural decision.

A flat structure with no grouping hides topics. A deep hierarchy buries important pages. An orphan page, with no internal links, may never be crawled. This article covers hierarchy models, link targets by page type, anchor text, breadcrumbs, pagination, orphan pages, and automation.

## Know what internal links do

### Pass PageRank

PageRank is Google's measure of a page's importance based on links. Internal links pass part of each page's PageRank to the pages it links to. As a simplified example: a homepage links to five pages, and each page receives about a fifth of what the homepage passes on. The real calculation is more complex, but the principle holds. Send more links to pages that earn revenue, such as products and pillar guides. Send fewer links to low-value pages, such as legal notices and tag archives.

### Make pages discoverable

Googlebot finds pages by following links. A page with no internal links is an orphan. Google can still find it through the sitemap, but it gets low crawl priority and little PageRank. Keep every important page within three clicks of the homepage.

### Show topic relationships

Links between related pages help Google understand topic clusters. Consider a CRM software site. A pillar page, "Complete guide to CRM software," links to cluster pages. Examples are "Best CRM for real estate," "CRM pricing guide," and "CRM integrations." Each cluster page links back to the pillar. Google reads the group as a site with depth on CRM topics.

### Guide users

Internal links also move users through a site toward conversion. A structure that serves crawlers usually serves people too.

## Choose a hierarchy model

| Model | Shape | Scale | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat | Homepage links to every page | Up to about 50 pages | Every page is one click away | Navigation clutters; no topic grouping |
| Shallow | Homepage, category, content | About 100 to 500 pages | Clear groups; most pages two or three clicks away | Categories split the homepage's PageRank |
| Deep | Homepage, category, subcategory, content | 1,000 pages or more | Detailed organization | Deepest pages sit four or five clicks away and get low crawl priority |
| Hub and spoke | Pillar page links to cluster pages, which link back | Any size | Strong topic signals; clear reader paths | Needs planning; hard to retrofit |

A shallow hierarchy looks like this:

```
Homepage
├── Products
│   ├── Product A
│   ├── Product B
│   └── Product C
├── Resources
│   ├── Blog Post 1
│   ├── Blog Post 2
│   └── Guide
└── Company
    ├── About
    └── Contact
```

It suits most business sites, small ecommerce catalogs, and content sites.

A deep hierarchy suits large ecommerce catalogs and enterprise content sites. Fix its main weakness with contextual links: from articles to products, and between related products. Those links shorten the path to deep pages.

A hub-and-spoke structure suits software blogs, content marketing sites, and knowledge bases:

```
Homepage
├── Pillar: Complete Guide to CRM
│   ├── Cluster: Best CRM for Real Estate
│   ├── Cluster: CRM Pricing Guide
│   ├── Cluster: CRM Integrations
│   └── Cluster: CRM Implementation Checklist
└── Pillar: Email Marketing Guide
    ├── Cluster: Email Marketing Tools
    ├── Cluster: Email Copywriting Tips
    └── Cluster: Email Automation Workflows
```

To build one:

1. Choose the core topics. These become pillars.
2. Write a thorough pillar page for each topic, often 3,000 to 5,000 words.
3. Write cluster pages for the subtopics, often 1,500 to 2,500 words each.
4. Link every cluster page to its pillar, and the pillar to every cluster page.

The [site architecture guide for engineering teams](/articles/site-architecture-seo-engineering) covers URL design for each model.

## Set link targets by page type

Pages that earn revenue need more internal links pointing at them. Use these ranges as a starting point for an ecommerce site:

| Page type | Internal links pointing in |
|---|---|
| Homepage | 100 or more (navigation and footer) |
| Category pages | 50 to 100 (homepage, subcategories, products) |
| Product pages | 20 to 50 (category, related products, articles) |
| Blog posts | 5 to 20 (related posts, categories, other articles) |
| Legal pages | 1 to 5 (footer only) |

As a rough model, the PageRank a page receives depends on how many internal links point at it and how strong the linking pages are:

```
PageRank received ≈ (number of internal links in) × (average strength of linking pages)
```

The practical rule follows from that model. Link from strong pages, such as the homepage and popular articles, to the pages you want to rank.

## Write anchor text that describes the target

Anchor text is the clickable text of a link. Google uses it to understand the target page.

Use descriptive anchors. "Best CRM for real estate" and "email marketing guide" describe the target. "Click here," "read more," and "this page" describe nothing.

An exact-match anchor is acceptable for internal links. If a page targets "best CRM for real estate," that phrase is a fine anchor. Still, vary anchors across many links. If 100 links all say "best CRM," the pattern looks automated. Mix variants such as "best CRM software," "CRM comparison guide," and "CRM for real estate agents."

Take extra care with commercial anchors. The same anchor, "buy CRM software," on every blog post looks manipulative. Use "CRM software comparison" in one post, "CRM tools" in another, and "customer relationship management systems" in a third.

## Build breadcrumbs with markup

Breadcrumbs show the path to the current page, such as Home, Products, CRM Software. They add links to every parent page, and Google can show them in search results. Mark them up as an ordered list inside a labeled `nav` element:

```html
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
  <ol class="breadcrumb">
    <li><a href="/">Home</a></li>
    <li><a href="/products">Products</a></li>
    <li><a href="/products/crm">CRM Software</a></li>
    <li aria-current="page">Best CRM for Real Estate</li>
  </ol>
</nav>
```

Add `BreadcrumbList` structured data in JSON-LD:

```html
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://example.com/" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "Products", "item": "https://example.com/products" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 3, "name": "CRM Software", "item": "https://example.com/products/crm" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 4, "name": "Best CRM for Real Estate" }
  ]
}
</script>
```

The last item needs no `item` URL, because it is the current page.

## Handle paginated series

Category pages, blog archives, and search results often span several pages. Choose one of two approaches.

Self-referencing canonicals are the default. Give each page its own canonical URL:

```html
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/products?page=2">
```

Each page can then be indexed, and items on deep pages stay discoverable. Link the pages to each other with normal `<a href>` links, so crawlers can follow the series. Do not point every page's canonical at page 1. Page 2 holds different items than page 1, so it is not a duplicate. The [canonical tag guide](/articles/canonical-tags-developers) covers this case.

A view-all page is the second option. If one page can show every item and still load fast, make it the canonical target for the series:

```html
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/products/all">
```

This concentrates signals on one URL. It fails when the view-all page is slow, which is common above 100 items.

Older guides recommend `rel="next"` and `rel="prev"` link elements. In March 2019, Google said it had not used them for indexing for years. Other search engines and some browsers may still read them, so they do no harm. Do not rely on them for Google.

## Place contextual links in the body

Contextual links sit inside body text: articles, guides, and product descriptions. They pass PageRank to specific pages, help readers find related content, and show topic relationships.

Follow four rules:

1. Put the most important link in the first 100 to 200 words, where most readers see it.
2. Link to relevant, valuable pages. An article about email marketing links to the email marketing tools page. A product comparison links to each product page.
3. Keep to about three to five contextual links per 1,000 words. More links split the value and look spammy.
4. Put the link in a natural sentence with a descriptive anchor. For example: "Many agents use `[CRM software designed for real estate](https://example.com/crm-real-estate)` to automate lead follow-up."

## Keep navigation and footer links lean

Links that appear on every page carry weight and are easy to misuse.

Header navigation holds the homepage, the top-level categories, and high-priority pages such as pricing and contact. Use dropdown menus for subcategories. Do not put 20 or more pages in the main menu.

The footer holds legal pages, secondary navigation such as support, and contact details. Do not stuff it with keyword links, and do not link 50 or more pages from it. Footer links serve users, not PageRank management.

Keep editorial internal links followed. Use `nofollow` only on links you do not vouch for, such as links inside user-generated content. To keep a page out of the index, use `noindex` on that page, not `nofollow` on the links.

## Find and fix orphan pages

An orphan page has no internal links pointing to it. Google finds it only through the sitemap, gives it low crawl priority, and passes it no PageRank. Orphans rarely rank.

To find orphans with Screaming Frog:

1. Crawl the site with the sitemap included in the crawl configuration.
2. Export the URLs the crawl found through links.
3. Compare them with the sitemap URLs.
4. Every URL in the sitemap but not in the link crawl is an orphan.

Ahrefs Site Audit also reports orphan pages in its internal pages report. The `Links` report in Search Console shows your most-linked internal pages, but it cannot show pages with zero links. Use a crawler for that.

For each orphan, choose one fix. If the page has value, link to it from related articles, category pages, or a related-content module. If it is a leftover draft or test page, remove it from the sitemap and delete it, or add `noindex`.

## Automate internal links

### Related-content module

Query the CMS for posts in the same categories or tags. Show three to five of them at the end of each post. Use the post titles as anchors. In WordPress:

```php
$related = get_posts([
  'category__in' => wp_get_post_categories($post->ID),
  'numberposts'  => 5,
  'post__not_in' => [$post->ID],
]);
foreach ($related as $related_post) {
  printf(
    '<a href="%s">%s</a>',
    esc_url(get_permalink($related_post->ID)),
    esc_html(get_the_title($related_post->ID))
  );
}
```

The loop variable is `$related_post`, not `$post`, so the global post object stays intact.

### Keyword auto-links

Keep a map from phrases to URLs, and link the first match in each article at publish time:

```javascript
const keywordMap = {
  'best CRM': '/products/crm',
  'email marketing': '/guides/email-marketing',
};
const escapeRegExp = s => s.replace(/[.*+?^${}()|[\]\\]/g, '\\$&');
function autoLinkContent(text) {
  let linked = text;
  for (const [phrase, url] of Object.entries(keywordMap)) {
    const pattern = new RegExp(`\\b${escapeRegExp(phrase)}\\b`, 'i'); // first match only
    linked = linked.replace(pattern, match => `<a href="${url}">${match}</a>`);
  }
  return linked;
}
```

Run it on plain text or on text nodes, not on raw HTML. On raw HTML, it can insert links inside attributes and existing links. Link one instance per page, not every instance. Skip the page that is itself the target.

### Link suggestions for editors

A safer pattern keeps a person in the loop. When an editor writes about "email marketing automation," the CMS suggests `/email-automation-guide` and `/email-marketing-tools`. The editor chooses and inserts the link. WordPress plugins such as Link Whisper work this way.

## Audit internal links each quarter

Check these conditions every quarter and after each major release:

- No orphan pages: every indexable page has at least one internal link.
- Pages that earn revenue, such as products and pillar guides, have 20 or more internal links.
- No internal link returns a 404 or passes through a redirect chain.
- Anchor text is descriptive and varied.
- Deep pages sit within three or four clicks of the homepage.
- Breadcrumbs appear on every page, with `BreadcrumbList` markup.
- Body content has about three to five contextual links per 1,000 words.
- Related-content modules appear on articles and products.
- Navigation and footer links contain no keyword stuffing.
- Paginated pages use self-referencing canonicals, or a fast view-all page.

Screaming Frog's `Inlinks` data and its crawl-depth report show the link graph. Ahrefs Site Audit shows orphans, broken links, redirect chains, and internal PageRank distribution. Content writers own the contextual links in each article; the [internal linking guide for content writers](/articles/internal-linking-content-writers) covers their side. The [guide to developer and content roles in internal linking](/articles/developer-vs-content-internal-linking) shows how to split the work.
