# Compare what AI memory costs in subscription, setup time, and lock-in.

You pay for an AI plan every month. You still spend the first minutes of each session explaining your business again. You want to know whether memory costs more, and which kind to pay for.

AI memory is not free. You either pay monthly for a cloud memory feature that keeps you on one platform, or you spend setup time to build files you own. This article compares both structures. Plan facts are from a January 2026 observation. Current prices are on each vendor's pricing page, so this article gives no figures.

## Price the cloud memory options

### ChatGPT Plus memory

ChatGPT Plus includes the memory feature. ChatGPT remembers details you tell it across conversations. It needs no setup and works at once.

The January 2026 plan included:

- automatic memory that persists between sessions;
- access to the models in the Plus plan;
- faster response times;
- priority access during high-traffic periods.

The plan also had limits:

- You cannot structure the memory yourself.
- You cannot see the raw storage or export it as a structured file.
- The memory stays in ChatGPT. If you change tools, you start again.
- You do not control what ChatGPT keeps and what it drops.

### Claude Pro projects

Claude Pro includes Projects, which act as memory. You create a project, add instructions and documents, and Claude uses that context each time you work in the project.

The January 2026 plan included:

- more usage than the free plan;
- access to the models in the Pro plan, and to Claude Code;
- priority access during peak times;
- Projects with custom instructions and knowledge files.

The plan also had limits:

- Projects are cloud-based and managed by Anthropic.
- Projects did not connect to Claude Code, the command-line tool, in January 2026.
- Knowledge stays inside one project. No universal memory exists across projects.

In January 2026, the individual ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro plans listed the same price on monthly billing. Claude Pro cost less per month on annual billing.

## Price the owned file option

Claude Code with an Obsidian vault costs your setup time plus a paid Claude plan. You build a `CLAUDE.md` file that lives on your computer, and Claude Code reads it at the start of each session. The [Obsidian business-memory guide](/articles/obsidian-ai-memory-for-business) shows the vault structure.

You pay in two forms:

- Setup time. A first `CLAUDE.md` file and folder structure take a few hours. A full design with search and hooks takes longer.
- A paid Claude plan. In January 2026, Claude Code came with the paid plans, not the free plan. The lowest paid plan listed the same monthly price as the other two options.

You get four things for that cost:

- memory that you control and can edit at any time;
- a file-based system that works with any future AI tool that reads local files;
- full choice of what the assistant knows;
- no dependence on one vendor for the record itself.

## Compare the cost structure over time

On monthly billing, the subscription total is the same in all three routes for year one, year two, year three, and year five. Each route needs one individual paid plan at the same listed monthly price, as observed in January 2026. Annual billing on a Claude plan lowers the two Claude routes a little. The difference is in the other cost lines and in what you hold at the end.

| Cost line | ChatGPT Plus memory | Claude Pro Projects | Claude Code with Obsidian |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | One individual plan | Same listed price as ChatGPT Plus | Same listed price, one paid Claude plan |
| Setup time | None | Minutes per project | A few hours for the first file and folders |
| Upkeep | Review and delete saved memories | Re-upload files when they change | Edit files, about 10 to 15 minutes a month |
| What you hold at the end | Memory inside ChatGPT | The files you uploaded | Every file, as Markdown on your disk |
| Cost to change tools | Start the memory again | Upload the files again | Point the new tool at the same folder |

The [subscription shutdown test](/articles/ai-subscription-shutdown-test) checks the last two rows before you cancel any plan.

## Count the time you lose without memory

The larger cost is not the subscription. It is the time you spend re-explaining yourself to an assistant that does not know you.

Without memory, the time goes to three tasks:

- You introduce yourself again, about 2 to 3 minutes per conversation.
- You restate preferences, tone, and format, about 5 minutes per complex task.
- You upload context documents again or paste the same information, 10 minutes or more per project.

Run the arithmetic on your own inputs. Suppose you use AI 5 times a week, which is 20 times a month. If memory saves 5 minutes per session, you get back 100 minutes a month, nearly 2 hours.

To price that time, multiply the hours by your own hourly rate. Compare the result with the monthly subscription. At most professional rates, 2 hours a month is worth more than one plan. These figures are arithmetic on assumed inputs, not measured savings. The [time measurement guide](/articles/how-much-time-wasted-on-ai-context) shows how to log your real minutes for a week.

## Know the hidden costs of cloud memory

Cloud memory feels cheaper because the fee is low and setup is zero. You pay in lock-in.

If you move from ChatGPT to Claude, you lose the ChatGPT memory. If you use both tools, you keep two memory systems and enter the same facts twice.

If a vendor raises its price, you have little bargaining power, because your workflow depends on its memory system. Moving means starting from scratch.

With a local file, you own the memory. If a vendor shuts down a tool, you still have the file, and you can use it with the next tool that reads Markdown. No migration cost exists for the record. [What stops working when you stop paying](/articles/what-stops-when-you-stop-paying-for-ai) lists what fails and what survives.

## Know the hidden costs of local memory

A local file needs you to manage it:

- Update it when your context changes.
- Back it up so you do not lose it.
- Learn basic Markdown syntax.

For most people, this upkeep takes 10 to 15 minutes a month. If you are not comfortable with text files, it takes longer at first.

The file also needs a data rule. It stays on your disk, but its content goes to the model provider when a session reads it. Check the provider's data-use terms, and keep passwords and API keys out of the file.

## Check whether a free plan is enough

You can use a free plan and paste your context at the start of each session. Most people start that way.

Pasting takes time. You forget it, or you skip it when you are in a hurry. The assistant then works from partial context, and the output is worse. The problem is the process, but people blame the assistant.

A free plan works for casual use. The ChatGPT custom instructions field is a small step up: each field held about 1,500 characters in January 2026, enough for a short profile. If you use AI every day for work, the time cost of pasting soon exceeds the cost of a paid plan.

## Choose the cost structure that fits your work

Cloud memory buys convenience: no setup, little upkeep, and it works when you turn it on. Owned files buy control: you decide what the assistant knows, you own the system, and you do not depend on one vendor.

The question is not which option is cheaper. The subscriptions match. The question is which cost structure matches how you work. Pick cloud memory if you want no setup and accept the lock-in. Pick owned files if you want the record to move with you, and pay for that in setup hours and monthly upkeep.

Plain text is not the whole answer, because the files still need an owner, a backup, and review. [Why plain text is the durable layer for AI memory](/articles/plain-text-ai-memory) covers those controls.
