# Check what Grok remembers before you give it ongoing work.

Grok has direct access to X. It can pull live posts, follow breaking news, and tell you what is trending in the last hour. Ask it who you are, what you work on, or what you told it three sessions ago, and the answer is thin or blank.

That gap matters when you move from quick questions to ongoing work. This article describes Grok memory as observed in January 2026, names its three limits, and gives a test to run on your own account. xAI changes these features often, so repeat the test before you rely on a result.

## Know what Grok memory does

xAI released a memory feature for Grok in April 2025. The announcement said Grok could now remember details from past conversations. The stated purpose was more personalized answers when you ask for advice or recommendations.

Reports of the April 2025 launch described these behaviors:

- Grok extracts details from past conversations and uses them in later answers.
- Memory follows you across devices only when you sign in to the same account.
- A setting named `Personalize with Memories` lets you view memories, delete specific ones, or turn the feature off.
- At launch, memory was a beta on grok.com and the iOS and Android apps, and it excluded users in the EU and UK.

## Limit 1: Grok decides what to keep

Grok extracts memories from your conversations. You do not write them.

That works for casual facts: "I prefer coffee over tea." "I live in Austin." "I am a freelance designer." It does not work for structured business context. You cannot hand Grok a context file with your client list, style guide, and project requirements. You can only hope that it picks up those details from conversation. When it misses one, you explain it again in the next session.

## Limit 2: depth does not cross sessions

Grok memory works in the app and on the website, but each conversation is still separate. You describe a project in one chat. In a new chat, Grok may recall your name and role. The specifics of the project are usually gone.

xAI changes memory features by product and plan. Before you plan ongoing work around a business tier, confirm on xAI's current plan page what that tier keeps across sessions.

## Limit 3: no file you own

Grok does not read a context file that you write and maintain. You cannot create a Markdown file that says who you are, what you do, and how you work, and have Grok load it. You cannot version that memory, back it up, or move it to another tool.

The memory lives inside xAI's system. If xAI changes the feature, you adapt. If xAI removes old memories, you lose them. If you switch assistants, you start again. The [AI memory ownership test](/articles/do-you-own-ai-memory) asks the same four questions of any product: can you inspect, correct, remove, and transfer what controls the job?

Claude Code works the other way. Its memory is a text file named `CLAUDE.md` in your project folder. You own it, you control each line, and you can open it in any text editor.

## Know what Grok does well

Grok is not a bad tool. It fits a different job.

Grok is strong at real-time X data: live posts, trending topics, and breaking news pulled directly from X. It gives quick answers, such as what people say about a product launch right now. It is fast and conversational for short exchanges.

Grok is not built for ongoing work. It is not a research partner that holds a project across weeks, and it does not manage a complex client file. Treat it as real-time search with a chat interface.

## Separate search from memory

Grok can pull your own X posts, so a question like "What did I post about yesterday?" returns real posts. That feels like memory. It is search.

Grok queries X and returns results. When you delete a post, Grok cannot return it, because Grok never stored it. A record you keep in a file stays available after the source platform changes. Search results do not.

## Compare Grok with other memory designs

The January 2026 comparison looked like this:

| Product | Memory scope | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Grok | Details extracted from past chats | View and delete saved memories; turn memory off |
| ChatGPT | Saved memories plus referenced chat history across all chats | Review and delete saved memories; turn memory off |
| Claude Projects | A memory summary per project, plus project files | Project files and instructions; project boundaries |
| Claude Code | The `CLAUDE.md` file and other files you tell it to read | Every line of the file |

ChatGPT memory is global. Personal and professional facts can mix, and a client name can surface in an unrelated chat. Grok memory is narrower, which gives better separation but less recall across sessions. Claude Projects group related chats and keep a memory summary per project; Grok has individual chats and no way to group them. The [Claude Projects and ChatGPT Projects comparison](/articles/claude-projects-vs-chatgpt-projects-business-memory) tests project boundaries in detail.

## Look at transparency and limits

xAI's April 2025 announcement described the memories as transparent. You can see what Grok knows and choose what to forget. That is more than ChatGPT offers for referenced chat history, which has no complete list to review.

Visibility is not control. In January 2026, you could see and delete Grok memories. You could not edit one directly, give it structure, or export the set.

xAI had not published memory limits as of January 2026. No public figure stated how many details Grok stores per user or per conversation. Other products cap or trim stored memories, and a cap means older entries can drop without notice. A file has no hidden cap. Its practical limit is the context window of the model that reads it, and you can see exactly what it holds.

## Run a Grok memory test

Use harmless, synthetic facts. Do not test with client data.

1. In a new chat, state a preference: "Weekly summaries use three bullets."
2. State a project fact: "Project North launches on September 18."
3. Open the memory view and record which facts Grok saved.
4. Open a new chat and ask for your summary format and the Project North launch date.
5. Compare the saved text with your words.
6. Delete the project memory and ask again in a new chat.

Record the date, platform, account tier, and each result. Step 3 shows what Grok chose to keep. Step 4 shows what crosses sessions. Step 5 shows whether Grok saved your exact fact or a paraphrase. Step 6 shows whether deletion works.

## Match Grok to the job

Grok memory handles some work well:

- casual personal use, such as restaurant suggestions, fitness goals, or news summaries;
- short projects of a day or two that need no long-term recall;
- X-specific tasks, such as trend monitoring, mention tracking, or social conversation analysis.

For ongoing projects and professional work, Grok memory does not hold enough. Those jobs need a record that you write.

## Work around the limits

If you use Grok because your team is on X Premium or because you need its real-time data, compensate in three ways.

1. Keep your own context file. Write your project details, preferences, and context in a Markdown file. Paste it into Grok at the start of each session.
2. Use Grok for search, not memory. Treat it as real-time search over X, and do not expect it to hold ongoing work.
3. Pair it with a file-based assistant. Use Grok for X research, then save the findings into files that Claude Code or another assistant reads. The [content research memory guide](/articles/ai-memory-content-research) shows how to keep sources, claims, and rejected angles between sessions.

This is manual work. It still gives you one record that outlives any single chat product. The limits above are design choices, so do not wait for a Grok update to fix them. [Chat history is not business memory](/articles/chat-history-is-not-business-memory) explains why the record belongs outside the chat.
