# Add SEO skills to your freelance writing and sell articles on outcomes.

This guide compared per-word rates in March 2026. SEO writers charged roughly two to three times what generalist writers charged for an article of the same length. Some SEO writers charge a flat fee per article, whatever the word count.

The difference is not the quality of the prose. It is what the article does. A generalist writer produces content. An SEO writer produces content that ranks, brings traffic, and converts, and clients pay more for a measurable result.

This article maps the move from generalist to SEO writer: the skills, the service packages, the positioning, the pricing, and a 90-day transition plan.

## Understand why clients pay more

A generalist writer solves a production problem: "We need blog posts." An SEO writer solves a growth problem: "We need organic traffic and leads."

Compare the two routes for one article.

**Generalist route:** the client supplies a topic, "write about invoicing software." The writer researches and writes 1,000 words. The article gets 50 to 100 views a month. The client sees a one-time cost.

**SEO route:** the writer picks the keyword "best invoicing software for contractors," which has steady monthly searches and buying intent. The writer studies the ranking competitors and finds the gaps. The writer produces a 2,500-word article with internal links, structured data, and a clear call to action. The article reaches position 4, brings 300 sessions a month, and converts at 4%, which is 12 leads a month. The client sees a recurring return.

A client who pays for an article that gets 50 views has bought a cost. A client who pays more for an article that brings a dozen leads a month has bought an asset. The figures above are a hypothetical illustration of the method; your own results depend on the keyword, the site, and the offer.

## Learn five skills

You do not need to become a technical SEO. You need the content layer: keywords, competitor analysis, on-page structure, intent, and briefs.

### Keyword research

Keyword research finds the terms people search when they look for your article's topic. Learn to:

- use Ahrefs, Semrush, or Ubersuggest to find search volume and difficulty;
- tell informational, navigational, and transactional intent apart;
- find long-tail keywords, which are more specific and less competitive;
- read People Also Ask and related searches in Google.

Allow two to four weeks of practice on 10 to 15 topics, with the vendors' own tutorials. The [keyword research process guide](/articles/keyword-research-process-guide) gives a full method.

### Competitor content analysis

Study the top 5 to 10 ranking articles to see why they rank and what your article needs. Learn to:

- compare length, structure, and headings;
- find content gaps: subtopics the ranking pages miss or treat thinly;
- check the ranking pages' link strength;
- list the related terms that belong in the article.

Use Ahrefs Content Explorer or Semrush Topic Research, or a content tool such as Surfer SEO or Clearscope. You can also open the top 10 results in tabs and take notes. Allow one to two weeks and 5 to 10 practice result pages.

### On-page optimization

On-page work helps Google understand what the article is about. Learn:

- **Titles and meta descriptions:** a clear title under about 60 characters with the keyword early.
- **Heading structure:** one H1 for the title by convention, then a logical order of H2 and H3.
- **Keyword placement:** the title, the first 100 words, some headings, and naturally in the body.
- **Internal links:** links to relevant pages on the client's site.
- **Images:** descriptive alt text, file names, and compression.
- **URLs:** short and readable, such as `/best-invoicing-software-contractors/`, not `/post-12345/`.

Allow one to two weeks. Practice on 5 to 10 articles with the free Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress or with Surfer SEO. The [SEO writing checklist](/articles/seo-writing-checklist-writers) turns this list into a pre-publish check.

### Writing for intent

Match the format and depth to what the searcher wants.

| Intent | Example queries | Format | Typical length | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Informational | "what is SEO," "how to write a resume" | Guides, how-tos, definitions | 1,000 to 2,500 words | Helpful and clear |
| Navigational | "Facebook login," "Ahrefs pricing" | The page they want, or a direct answer | 200 to 500 words | Direct |
| Transactional | "buy running shoes," "CRM software trial" | Product pages, landing pages | 500 to 1,500 words | Persuasive |
| Commercial investigation | "best CRM for small business," "Ahrefs vs Semrush" | Comparisons, reviews, lists | 2,000 to 3,500 words | Balanced, with pros, cons, and feature tables |

To find the intent, search the keyword and read the top results. If they are all lists, write a list. If they are all how-to guides, write a guide. Match the format Google already rewards. Allow one to two weeks and one practice article per intent. The [search intent guide](/articles/search-intent-explained) covers mixed intent.

### Content briefs

A brief tells another writer what to write and how to optimize it. Learn to set the target keyword, the intent, the competitor findings, and the outline. Add the related terms, the word count, the tone, and the internal links. Older guides call related terms "LSI keywords." Google has said it does not use that concept. Write "related terms" instead, and pick them from the ranking pages.

Many clients do not need you to write. They need you to plan content for their own writers or cheaper contractors. A brief takes one to two hours, sells for a meaningful fraction of an article fee, and has a higher margin than writing. Allow a week and three to five practice briefs. The [content brief template](/articles/content-brief-template-seo) gives a starting structure.

## Package the services

Do not add "SEO optimization" to your profile and stop there. Sell distinct packages.

**Package 1: SEO blog post.** For small businesses and solo founders who need occasional content. It includes keyword research for one keyword, a 1,500- to 2,000-word article, on-page work (title, description, headings, internal links), and one revision round.

**Package 2: strategy and writing retainer.** For growing businesses where content is a main channel. It includes research on 10 to 15 keywords and a three- to six-month editorial calendar. It delivers four to six articles a month of 2,000 to 2,500 words. A monthly report covers traffic, rankings, and conversions from your content.

**Package 3: briefs only.** For agencies, SaaS companies, and online stores with their own writers. It includes four to eight detailed briefs a month, each with the keyword, intent, competitor analysis, outline, related terms, internal links, word count, and tone.

**Package 4: pillar content.** For established companies that build topical authority in competitive markets. It includes deep research and competitor analysis, a 4,000- to 6,000-word guide, links to supporting content, custom graphics or data visuals, and two revision rounds.

Order the fees by value. A brief costs less than a standard article, and a standard article costs less than a pillar guide. A retainer costs less per article than the same articles bought one at a time.

## Position yourself on an outcome

A weak line: "Freelance writer specializing in SEO content."

A strong line: "I help SaaS companies rank on page one for buyer-intent keywords and turn organic search into qualified leads."

The formula: `I help [specific client type] achieve [specific outcome] through [specific method].`

More examples:

- "I help ecommerce brands rank for product comparison searches that bring buyers, so they depend less on paid ads."
- "I help B2B service companies build topical authority with content that brings inbound leads."
- "I help dental practices rank for local searches such as 'dentist [city]'."

Put the line in your LinkedIn headline and on your portfolio home page. Add it to outreach templates and to any marketplace profile, such as Upwork or Fiverr. A niche plus SEO sells better than SEO alone: "SaaS SEO writer" commands more than "SEO writer."

## Price on outcomes, not words

Do not compete on price. Compete on value.

**Anchor on the return.** Present the fee next to the expected result: "Based on similar articles, this one should rank within [timeframe] and bring [range] sessions a month. At a [rate] conversion rate, that is [range] leads a month. Multiply by your average customer value, and the article's annual value is many times its fee." Use the client's own conversion rate and customer value, and label the estimate as an estimate.

**Quote per article, not per word.** A weak pitch: "I charge [rate] per word, so 1,500 words costs [total]." A strong pitch: "I charge [fee] per SEO article. My articles typically reach [positions] within [timeframe] and bring [range] sessions a month each." Per-word pricing makes you a commodity. Per-hour pricing caps your income. Flat fees and retainers reward efficiency and results.

**Discount retainers modestly.** A retainer should cost 10 to 15% less than the same number of articles bought one at a time, in exchange for predictable income. Four articles a month at the single-article rate, for example, becomes a retainer about 15% lower.

## Show results, not samples

Most writers show samples. SEO writers show results. Use this case study structure:

**Title:** `How I helped [client type] increase organic traffic [percentage] in [timeframe].`

1. **Challenge:** "[Client] published two or three posts a month with little traffic growth. Most targeted informational keywords with low buying intent, and nothing ranked on page one."
2. **Strategy:** "I found 20 high-intent comparison and 'best' keywords with meaningful monthly volume, then wrote 12 articles over six months for them."
3. **Execution:** competitor analysis for each article, 2,500 to 3,000 words of original content, on-page work, and calls to action that lead to product pages.
4. **Results:** organic sessions before and after, the number of articles in positions 1 to 5, the organic conversion rate, the leads per month, and whether the client renewed.
5. **Testimonial:** "[The client's own words about the result]" [Name, title, company]

Use only real, permitted figures. The [freelance SEO portfolio guide](/articles/freelance-seo-portfolio-building) covers how to collect them.

## Make the switch in 90 days

**Month 1: learn.**

- Weeks 1 and 2: spend 10 to 15 hours on SEO writing tutorials from Ahrefs, Semrush, Income School, and Backlinko.
- Week 3: start a low-cost keyword tool such as Ubersuggest, or an Ahrefs or Semrush trial, and research 10 topics.
- Week 4: analyze 5 to 10 result pages and write practice outlines.

**Month 2: build proof.**

- Weeks 1 and 2: write three to five SEO articles for real keywords, as if for a client.
- Week 3: publish them on Medium, LinkedIn, or your own site.
- Week 4: offer two or three free or discounted SEO articles to existing clients in exchange for testimonials and ranking data.

**Month 3: reposition and sell.**

- Week 1: update LinkedIn, your portfolio, and your profiles with the new positioning.
- Weeks 2 and 3: pitch 10 to 20 prospects with SEO offers, portfolio pieces, and the return pitch.
- Week 4: close one or two clients at SEO rates, per article or on a retainer.

You can move gradually. Keep generalist clients while you build the SEO portfolio. Switch fully once SEO income passes generalist income, often after 6 to 12 months. Real ranking data for your case studies usually takes three to six months.

## Keep the tool budget small

Start with Ubersuggest for keyword research, Google Search Console to track your content, and Grammarly for editing. Add Ahrefs or Semrush and Surfer SEO once you have three or more SEO clients.

You do not need technical SEO skills such as site speed, crawl management, or structured data at scale. Technical SEO is a separate discipline, and clients hire technical SEOs or developers for it. Your job is the content layer, done well.
