# Run seven SEO quick wins in 90 days to test organic search as a channel.

You run a young company. Paid acquisition costs more each quarter. You need a cheaper source of customers, and an agency retainer or a full-time SEO hire does not fit the budget yet.

Some of the highest-return SEO work needs neither an agency nor an engineering sprint. You can do it yourself in about 24 hours spread over 90 days. This playbook covers seven quick wins: fixes with a large effect, a small effort, and little technical risk.

## Why start with quick wins

SEO compounds slowly. A content strategy takes 6 to 12 months to pay back, and technical overhauls need engineers. Before you commit that kind of money, get evidence that organic search can work for your business. Quick wins supply it. If the fixes move traffic in 90 days, you have a case for hiring. The [founder's hiring guide](/articles/founder-seo-hiring-decision) covers that next step.

A quick win meets four tests:

- it takes under 10 hours;
- it needs no engineering, or under 2 hours of it;
- it shows a measurable effect in 30 to 60 days;
- it applies to most business models.

Quick wins improve what already exists. On a brand-new site with no traffic, publish 20 to 40 useful pages first, then apply them. On a site that Google cannot crawl or index, fix that first. Search Console shows whether pages are indexed.

## Quick win 1: complete your Google Business Profile

**Time:** 2 hours. **For:** local businesses such as restaurants, clinics, and service firms.

Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, controls how a business appears in local search and in Google Maps.

1. **Claim and verify the profile.** Go to `business.google.com`, search for the business, and claim it. The verification method (postcard, phone, email, or video) varies by business.
2. **Fill in every field.** Add hours, including holiday hours, and the phone number, website, and email. List every service. Add attributes such as "women-led," "veteran-owned," or "wheelchair accessible." Write a description of up to 750 characters that says what you do and where.
3. **Upload photos.** Add a square logo, a cover photo, 5 to 10 interior photos, product or service photos, and team photos.
4. **Post weekly.** Profile posts show specials ("20% off lattes this week"), events ("Live music Friday at 7 pm"), and new products.
5. **Reply to every review.** Thank positive reviewers by name. Answer negative reviews with an apology and a direct contact route. Replies show searchers that the business pays attention.

An example description:

> Acme Coffee Roasters is a specialty coffee shop in downtown Portland serving single-origin pour-overs, espresso drinks, and fresh pastries. We roast beans in-house every week and offer free Wi-Fi. Open 7 am to 7 pm daily.

Track results in the profile's Performance view, which shows the searches that found you and the calls, direction requests, and website clicks. The [Google Business Profile guide](/articles/google-business-profile-optimization) covers categories and reviews in more depth.

## Quick win 2: improve your top 10 pages

**Time:** 5 hours. **For:** any site with existing traffic.

On most sites, a small group of pages brings most of the traffic. Work on those first.

1. **Find the pages.** In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, then Engagement, then Pages and screens. Sort by sessions for the last 90 days and export the top 10.
2. **Rewrite the title tags.** The title is a major on-page element. Replace "Blog - Acme Coffee" with "Single-Origin Pour-Overs in Portland | Acme Coffee." Keep titles to about 50 to 60 characters, because longer titles get cut off in results. Put the main keyword early and the brand at the end.
3. **Rewrite the meta descriptions.** Google does not rank on the description, but it can show it under the title, where it affects clicks. Replace "Read our blog about coffee" with a specific sentence of about 150 to 160 characters that names what the page offers.
4. **Add internal links.** Link each top page to related pages. A popular post on brewing pour-over coffee can link to your pour-over beans, your grinder guide, and your shop page. Internal links help Google find related pages and pass authority to them.
5. **Add structured data where it fits.** Structured data states what a page is. Use `Article` for posts and a specific `LocalBusiness` type for a shop:

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "CoffeeShop",
  "name": "Acme Coffee Roasters",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "123 Main St",
    "addressLocality": "Portland",
    "addressRegion": "OR"
  },
  "openingHours": "Mo-Su 07:00-19:00"
}
```

Structured data does not raise rankings by itself. It makes pages eligible for rich results that match their type. Google does not show review stars for a business's reviews of itself on its own site. Validate the markup in the Rich Results Test. Track click-through rate and impressions for the 10 pages in the Search Console Performance report.

This win usually gives the best return for the time, because it works on pages that already get traffic.

## Quick win 3: fix broken links and 404 errors

**Time:** 3 hours. **For:** sites with more than about 100 pages.

Broken links send visitors to dead ends and waste crawler requests.

1. **Find them.** Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs in its free version. Enter your domain, run the crawl, and filter by status code 404.
2. **Fix each one.** If the page moved, add a 301 redirect to the new URL. If the page is gone, redirect to a closely related page, or let it return 404 if nothing related exists. If an internal link has a typo, correct the link.
3. **Check outbound links.** The same crawl lists links to other sites that return 404. Update or remove them.

Example: `/blog/coffee-guide-2023` returns 404 and the content now lives at `/blog/coffee-guide`. Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. In WordPress, use the Redirection plugin. In Shopify, use the URL redirects page in the admin; search the admin for "URL redirects" to find it. On a custom site, add the rule to `.htaccess` for Apache or to the nginx config.

Track 404s in the Search Console Page indexing report, which replaced the Coverage report in 2022.

## Quick win 4: load images efficiently

**Time:** 2 hours. **For:** image-heavy sites such as stores, blogs, and portfolios.

Slow pages lose visitors and rank worse. Two image changes give the biggest gain for the least work.

1. **Measure first.** Run the home page and a key template through PageSpeed Insights at `pagespeed.web.dev`. Note the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). The target is under 2.5 seconds.
2. **Lazy-load images below the first screen.** Add `loading="lazy"` so those images load only when the visitor scrolls:

```html
<img src="coffee-shop.jpg" alt="Acme Coffee Roasters interior" loading="lazy">
```

WordPress has added this attribute to images by default since version 5.5, released in 2020. Many Shopify themes do the same; if yours does not, add it to the image tags in the Liquid templates. On a custom site, add it to every `<img>` except the images in the first screen.

Do not lazy-load the hero image or the logo. The hero is usually the LCP element, and lazy-loading it makes LCP slower.

3. **Compress images.** Run images through TinyPNG or ImageOptim before upload, or let a CDN service such as Cloudflare Images or Imgix compress and resize them.

Retest in PageSpeed Insights two weeks later. The [page speed guide for developers](/articles/page-speed-optimization-developers) covers the next layer of fixes.

## Quick win 5: answer common questions on the page

**Time:** 3 hours. **For:** guides, support pages, product pages, and service pages.

Searchers ask questions before they buy. A short questions section, written from real customer questions, answers them on the page. It also gives Google clear passages for People Also Ask boxes and AI-generated summaries.

1. **Collect the questions.** Use your support inbox, sales calls, and the People Also Ask box for your main keywords.
2. **Add a questions section.** Give each question its own subheading and answer it in two to four sentences.
3. **Keep answers specific.** "Specialty coffee is coffee that scores 80 points or more on the Specialty Coffee Association's 100-point scale" beats a vague answer.

Older guides recommend `FAQPage` markup here to win expandable FAQ results. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for authoritative government and health sites. For most businesses, that markup no longer changes the listing. The on-page answers still help.

## Quick win 6: publish comparison pages

**Time:** 5 hours. **For:** SaaS, ecommerce, and service businesses.

Searches such as "[product A] vs [product B]" show buying intent. The searcher compares options before a purchase.

1. **Find the comparisons.** Type "[your product] vs" into Google and note the suggestions. Do the same for your main competitors.
2. **Build each page on one structure:**

```markdown
# [Product A] vs [Product B]: which fits [use case]
## Summary
Two sentences on who each product suits.
## Feature comparison
| Feature | Product A | Product B |
|---------|-----------|-----------|
| [Feature] | [Value] | [Value] |
## Strengths and limits
An honest assessment of each.
## Recommendation
Choose A if [condition]. Choose B if [condition].
```

3. **Use a real table.** Google often shows comparison tables as featured snippets.

Keep every claim about a competitor current and checkable, and date the page. Track the pages' rankings in Search Console, or in Ahrefs or Semrush if you pay for one.

## Quick win 7: refresh declining content

**Time:** 4 hours. **For:** blogs, guides, and other evergreen content.

Content loses rankings as it ages and as competitors publish newer versions.

1. **Find the decline.** In GA4, compare the last 90 days with the previous 90 days. List pages that lost 20% or more of their traffic.
2. **Update the substance.** Replace old statistics with current ones, update screenshots, and add new examples. Expand thin sections with 200 to 500 words of new material.
3. **Show the date.** Add a visible "Last updated" line with the date of the real update. Update a year in the title only when the content changed to match.
4. **Keep the URL.** A URL with a year in it, such as `/2023/`, is tempting to change. A URL change throws away the page's history unless you add a 301 redirect. Leave the URL alone where you can.

Change the date only when the content changes. A new date on old content misleads readers. Track each refreshed URL in the Search Console Performance report. The [content refresh strategy guide](/articles/content-refresh-strategy) covers which pages to pick first.

## Follow a 90-day schedule

| Weeks | Work | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Quick win 1 (Business Profile) and quick win 3 (broken links) | 5 |
| 3 and 4 | Quick win 2 (top 10 pages) and quick win 4 (images) | 7 |
| 5 and 6 | Quick win 5 (on-page answers) and quick win 7 (refreshes) | 7 |
| 7 to 12 | Quick win 6 (comparison pages), about 1 hour a week | 5 |

That is about 24 hours over 90 days, or 2 hours a week. With only 10 hours, do quick wins 1, 2, and 3. You can also hand the list to a freelancer on a marketplace such as Upwork and use this article as the brief.

## Use free tools first

Search Console, Google Analytics 4, PageSpeed Insights, the Rich Results Test, and the free version of Screaming Frog cover all seven wins. Paid keyword tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush, and editing tools such as Grammarly, help with research and polish. Add them after the first results justify the subscription.

## Measure the result

Record a baseline before you start. Then check weekly:

- organic sessions and top landing pages in GA4;
- keyword positions and click-through rate in Search Console;
- 404 errors and indexed pages in Search Console;
- LCP and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) in PageSpeed Insights. The targets are LCP under 2.5 seconds and INP under 200 milliseconds.

Expect the changes to show in 30 to 60 days, because Google needs to recrawl the pages. At day 90, compare organic sessions and top-10 keyword counts with the baseline. If both rose clearly, organic search works for your business, and you have the case to hire a specialist or scale content.

If they did not, check two things. Did all seven wins ship? Is a technical problem, such as rendering or indexing, holding the site back? The guide to [minimum viable SEO for solo founders](/articles/seo-solo-founders-minimum-viable) covers the baseline a site needs before quick wins can work.
