# Write answer blocks that Google can lift into a featured snippet.

Featured snippet writing structures a passage so that Google can extract it as the answer box at the top of the organic results. The answer box is the most visible organic placement, and it tells the searcher that your page has the answer.

Extraction follows patterns. Definition queries get short paragraphs. Process queries get ordered lists. Collection queries get bulleted lists. Comparison queries get tables. This article is for the writer. It covers how Google selects a passage, the four formats with templates, and the sentence patterns that get extracted. It also covers multi-snippet pages and the mistakes that block extraction. For opportunity research and tracking, see the companion guide on [featured snippet optimization](/articles/featured-snippet-optimization).

## How Google selects a passage

Google takes featured snippets from pages that already rank on page one for the query. Position 1 often wins. Positions 2 to 5 win when their answer fits the query format better.

Use four checks when preparing an answer. These are writing heuristics, not stated Google selection rules:

1. **The page ranks on page one.** Snippets rarely come from page two or beyond.
2. **The passage answers the query directly.** It is short and complete on its own.
3. **The format matches the query.** Definitions need paragraphs, processes need lists, and comparisons need tables.
4. **The HTML is extractable.** Clean headings, lists, and tables let Google isolate the answer.

Snippets appear for these query types:

- definitions: "what is [term]";
- processes: "how to [action]";
- comparisons: "[option A] vs [option B]";
- lists: "best [category]," "types of [subject]";
- amounts: "how much does [thing] cost";
- reasons: "why does [event] happen."

Search the target query before you write. If Google shows no snippet, formatting does not create one. Google decides which queries get snippets.

### Snippets and AI Overviews

Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024. Since then, many queries that showed a snippet show an AI-generated summary built from several sources. Snippets still appear for many queries. The pages that AI Overviews cite often have the same traits as snippet winners: direct answers, clear structure, and clean HTML. An answer block that suits one format also suits the other. The [AI Overviews strategy guide](/articles/ai-overviews-seo-strategy) covers the differences.

## Use the four formats

### Paragraph snippets

A paragraph snippet shows a block of about 40 to 60 words. Definition queries ("what is"), explanation queries ("why does"), and single-fact queries ("when was") trigger it.

Put the answer directly under an H2 or H3 that contains the query. Write it as a complete thought in 40 to 60 words.

```markdown
## What is [term]?
[Term] is [a category] that [does something]. [One sentence on how it works.]
[One sentence of essential context.]
```

The paragraph must stand alone. Google shows it without the text around it. If the answer only makes sense after the previous paragraph, Google skips it. After the answer block, expand with the full detail. The block earns the click, and the depth below it makes the visit worth it.

### Ordered list snippets

An ordered list snippet shows numbered steps. Process queries ("how to"), step queries ("steps to"), and ranked queries ("top 10") trigger it.

Put a numbered list directly under an H2 that contains the process. Start each item with a short step name.

```markdown
## How to [process]
1. **[Step name].** One sentence that says what to do.
2. **[Step name].** One sentence that says what to do.
3. **[Step name].** One sentence that says what to do.
```

Google usually shows five to eight items. When the list is longer, Google truncates it and adds "More items," which gives the searcher a reason to click. Keep each item to one line or one short paragraph. Items with several paragraphs make extraction unpredictable.

### Bulleted list snippets

A bulleted list snippet shows a collection with no order. Category queries ("types of"), feature queries ("benefits of"), and best-of queries ("best tools for") trigger it.

```markdown
## Types of [subject]
- **[Type name].** One-sentence description.
- **[Type name].** One-sentence description.
- **[Type name].** One-sentence description.
```

Google can also build a list snippet from headings. Take a page with an H2 "Best SEO tools" and an H3 for each tool. Google may show the H3 headings as the list, even with no bullet list on the page.

### Table snippets

A table snippet shows rows and columns. Comparison queries, cost queries, specification queries, and any query about several items with several attributes trigger it.

Use a real HTML table, or a Markdown table that renders as one, with clear headers:

```markdown
## [Plan A] vs [Plan B]
| Feature | Plan A | Plan B |
|---------|--------|--------|
| Users   | 5      | Unlimited |
| Storage | 100 GB | 1 TB   |
| Support | Email  | 24/7 phone |
```

Keep tables small: eight rows or fewer and two to four columns extract best. Google truncates large tables in ways that can drop the meaningful rows.

## Write in five steps

1. **Start from a selected opportunity.** Use the opportunity and tracking workflow to choose the query before this writing pass.
2. **Read the current snippet.** Note the format, the extracted text, the heading above it, and the number of words or items.
3. **Match the format.** A paragraph snippet needs a paragraph answer, and a list snippet needs a list. A format mismatch is a common reason a page is not extracted.
4. **Write the answer block.** Place it directly under a heading that contains the query. Keep it short: 40 to 60 words, five to eight items, or eight rows or fewer. Make it complete on its own. Answer without preamble. Use proper HTML.
5. **Add depth below the block.** Follow the block with explanation, examples, data, and analysis. A thin page sends visitors back to the results.

After you publish, record the edited passage and hand it to the recrawl and ownership tracking workflow. Selection is not guaranteed. Google may pick another source even when your format is clear.

## Use sentence patterns that get extracted

### The "is" definition pattern

For "what is" queries:

> [Term] is [category or type] that [function or purpose]. It [key trait] by [mechanism]. [One more sentence of essential context.]

The pattern classifies the term, states its purpose, and adds one distinguishing detail, all within 40 to 60 words.

Illustrative edit, before: "Canonical tags are important for websites with many pages." After: "A canonical tag is an HTML link that identifies a page’s preferred URL among duplicate or similar versions. Search engines can use it as a canonicalization signal." The revision defines the term and qualifies the signal.

### The "involves" process pattern

For "how does" queries:

> [Process] involves [number] stages: [short list]. It begins with [first stage], moves through [middle stages], and ends with [result].

This gives the reader a complete process summary. The numbered steps follow below it.

Illustrative edit, before: "Redirect audits involve lots of technical checks." After: "A redirect audit involves three checks: request the old URL, follow its redirect, and confirm the final response. Record each status and destination before you compare the result with the migration map."

### The comparison pattern

For "vs" queries, open with a two-sentence summary of the difference, then place the table directly after it. Google may extract either the paragraph or the table.

Illustrative edit, before: "A 301 and a 302 are different redirects." After: "A 301 indicates a permanent move. A 302 indicates a temporary move." Follow that contrast with a table of intended use, response status, and destination checks.

### The "because" reason pattern

For "why" queries:

> [Subject] [verb] because [main reason]. [Second reason.] This happens when [condition], and the result is [outcome].

The cause comes in the first sentence. The supporting factors follow.

Illustrative edit, before: "Images can make a site slow for several reasons." After: "An oversized hero image can delay loading because the browser must download more bytes before it can paint the image. Check resource load duration before you attribute the delay to file size."

## Target several snippets from one page

One page can win snippets for several queries when each H2 section carries its own answer block.

A guide to on-page SEO can target three queries:

- "what is on-page SEO," with a paragraph under the H2 "What is on-page SEO?";
- "on-page SEO checklist," with a list under the H2 "On-page SEO checklist";
- "on-page vs off-page SEO," with a table under the H2 "On-page vs off-page SEO."

Make each block independent. Google picks from different sections of the same page for different queries.

### People Also Ask

People Also Ask boxes show questions with answers pulled from web pages. Add question subheadings (H3 or H4) through the page and answer each directly below:

```markdown
### How often should you update SEO content?
Review content performance every month. Refresh pages whose traffic
fell 20% or more. Most competitive content benefits from a substantive
update every 6 to 12 months.
```

Keep each answer to about 50 to 80 words. Google extracts these pairs with logic similar to snippet selection.

### Answers that work aloud

Voice assistants sometimes read a featured snippet as the spoken answer. Spoken queries are longer and more conversational: "how do I make my website load faster" rather than "improve page speed." Use question headings in natural phrasing, and write answers in full sentences that make sense when heard. An answer that begins "To improve page speed, ..." works better aloud than a bare list. The [voice search guide](/articles/voice-search-optimization-roles) covers the rest.

## Defend the snippets you win

Snippets change hands. Google rotates sources, tests formats, and sometimes removes a snippet from a query.

Use the snippet opportunity and monitoring guide to record ownership, recrawls, and before-and-after clicks. Bring the winning passage back to this writing checklist when a competitor answers more clearly. Revise the answer's facts and format, then save the exact change for that next measurement cycle.

## Leave markup out of the plan

Structured data does not decide featured snippets. `FAQPage` markup once added a separate FAQ rich result next to a snippet. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for authoritative government and health sites, so for most sites that second feature is gone. Structured data still serves other features, and the [structured data implementation guide](/articles/structured-data-implementation) covers where it helps. For snippets, spend the effort on the headings, the answer text, and the HTML.

## Avoid five mistakes

**The answer is buried.** A long introduction can make the answer harder to find. Put a short answer near its heading to improve readability. That placement is a writing heuristic. It is not a stated Google selection rule. [Google says its systems determine whether a page makes a suitable featured snippet](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/featured-snippets).

**The answer is too long.** A 150-word paragraph can bury the direct answer in supporting detail. Be brief in the block and complete below it. Shorter text does not guarantee selection.

**The heading misses the query.** For "how to improve page speed," a heading such as "Performance optimization techniques" is a weak match. Use the query's words: "How to improve page speed."

**The HTML blocks extraction.** Lists built from styled `<span>` elements instead of `<ul>` or `<ol>`, and tables built with CSS grid instead of `<table>`, may not be extractable. Use semantic HTML.

**The page does not rank yet.** Snippet formatting matters only on page one. A page on page three needs ranking work first. The [SEO writing checklist](/articles/seo-writing-checklist-writers) covers that ground.

## Know what a snippet does to clicks

A snippet can cut clicks for simple definitions, because the searcher reads the answer and leaves. For complex queries, it can raise clicks, because the snippet signals that the full page is worth reading. Since January 2020, the page in the snippet does not also appear in the first page of regular results for that query. A win replaces your regular listing. Click-through studies vary widely, so compare your own before-and-after rate in Search Console.

Work in batches of 10 to 15 pages where you rank in positions 1 to 5 and a snippet exists. Rewrite the batch, watch it for four weeks, measure the snippets gained, and then move to the next batch. Pages that target queries with no snippet, or that rank below page one, do not belong in the batch.
