# Win featured snippets for the queries where you already rank on page one.

A featured snippet is the answer box Google shows at the top of the organic results. Google extracts it from a web page, shows the extract, and links the source. The page that supplies it gets the most visible organic position on the results page.

Google does not award snippets at random. It picks a passage that answers the query directly, in a clear structure, from a page that already ranks well. This article covers the snippet types, the queries that trigger them, and how to find opportunities. It then gives a six-step method, advanced tactics, tracking, and the mistakes that cost snippets.

## Know the four snippet types

Use the visible result to classify each opportunity before you assign writing work:

| Observed format | Check before assigning the edit |
|---|---|
| Paragraph | The page can give one complete answer under a query heading |
| Ordered or bulleted list | The task needs steps or a collection, with semantic list markup |
| Table | The comparison has real attributes and clear headers |
| Video | The recording contains the answer and a usable starting point |

The [answer-block writing guide](/articles/featured-snippet-writing) owns the sentence templates, sample lengths, and edited examples. This guide owns the opportunity list and the evidence that an edit wins or loses a snippet.

## Weigh what a snippet is worth

A snippet sits at the top of the organic results. Ads and other features can still appear above it. On mobile, it can fill most of the first screen.

Published click-through studies disagree widely on how many clicks a snippet takes, so do not plan on a borrowed number. Measure your own: compare the query's click-through rate in Search Console before and after you win it.

Four other effects matter:

- **Deduplication.** Since January 2020, the page in the snippet does not also appear in the first page of regular results for that query. A snippet win replaces your regular listing.
- **Zero-click searches.** Some searchers read the answer and do not click. That can cut traffic for simple definitions. It still puts your brand in front of the searcher. The guide on [zero-click searches](/articles/zero-click-searches-seo) covers when that trade is worth it.
- **Voice answers.** Voice assistants sometimes read a featured snippet aloud as the answer.
- **AI Overviews.** Since Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024, many informational queries show an AI-generated summary above the snippet. The same page structure, a direct answer under a matching heading, helps a page get cited there too. See the [AI Overviews strategy guide](/articles/ai-overviews-seo-strategy).

To block a snippet for a page, use the `nosnippet` or `max-snippet` robots directive. To protect one passage, mark it with the `data-nosnippet` attribute.

## Find the queries that trigger snippets

Google shows snippets when a short answer helps. Triggers include:

- definitions: "what is [concept]";
- procedures: "how to [task]";
- comparisons: "[X] vs [Y]";
- lists: "types of [thing]," "best [category]";
- figures: "average [metric]," "cost of [item]."

Examples: "what is the ketogenic diet," "how to tie a bow tie," "React vs Angular," "types of mortgage loans," and "average cost of roof replacement."

Navigational queries ("Facebook login"), transactional queries ("buy running shoes"), and local queries ("coffee shops near me") rarely trigger snippets. Informational content has the most chances.

## Find the snippets within reach

A page outside the top 10 rarely wins a snippet. Start with queries where you already rank on page one and a competitor holds the snippet. Position 1 does not guarantee the snippet either. A page in position 3 with a better-structured answer can take it from position 1.

In Ahrefs:

1. Open the Organic Keywords report for your domain.
2. Filter SERP features by "Featured snippet."
3. Sort by position, and focus on positions 2 to 5.
4. Rank the list by search volume.

Semrush offers the same filter in its Organic Research and Position Tracking reports. Add question research from AnswerThePublic and AlsoAsked. In Search Console, look for queries with high impressions and low click-through rate. Those queries often sit below a competitor's snippet.

Prioritize queries that meet four tests. Each has meaningful volume, for example more than 500 searches a month. You rank on page one. A competitor holds the snippet. The query matches your page's topic. Start with 10 to 20 queries and scale when you see results.

## Optimize a page in six steps

### Step 1: pick the target query

Choose one query per section of the page. The query sets the heading, the format, and the length.

### Step 2: read the current snippet

Search the query and study the snippet:

- Is it a paragraph, a list, or a table?
- How many words or items does it show?
- What structure does the source page use: H2 headings, lists, tables?
- Is the answer complete or thin?

Example: suppose the snippet for "How to make cold brew coffee" is a four-step list. The steps are coarse-grind the beans, combine the grounds with cold water at a 1:4 ratio, steep for 12 to 24 hours, and strain. To compete, your page needs an ordered list with the same scope and clearer steps.

### Step 3: match the format

Assign the writer's format checklist. Save the current snippet, its source URL, and its format with the brief. Confirm that the edited page uses the corresponding paragraph, semantic list, or table. Do not treat a word count or row count as a Google eligibility threshold.

### Step 4: answer first, explain second

Do not bury the answer. Some pages open with an introduction, a history, and a list of benefits, and reach the method 600 words in. They give Google nothing to extract near the top. Put the answer in the first 200 words of its section. Follow it with the context: why each step matters, the variations, and the limits.

### Step 5: cover the related questions

People Also Ask boxes often draw from the same pages that win snippets. For "What is SEO?", related questions include "How does SEO work?", "Why is SEO important?", and "What are the types of SEO?" Give each its own H2 and a 40- to 60-word answer. One page can then win several snippets and People Also Ask entries.

### Step 6: check the markup and wait

Google does not use structured data to choose featured snippets. Do not add `HowTo` or `FAQPage` markup for that purpose. Google removed HowTo rich results in September 2023. Since August 2023, it shows FAQ rich results only for authoritative government and health sites. Clean HTML headings, lists, and tables do the work.

After you publish, request indexing in Search Console and save the publication date. Check URL Inspection for an observed recrawl before interpreting a result change. A recrawl does not guarantee selection. Monitor ownership and query clicks on a consistent schedule, then compare with the site’s own prior snippet edits. Do not promise a 30-to-90-day change window.

## Use advanced tactics

**Assign a standalone answer.** Send the selected query, current format, missing facts, and source requirements to the answer-block writing guide. Keep sentence editing there so this worksheet stays focused on selection and measurement.

**Upgrade the opportunities you already own.** Check whether the answer still matches the query and current source facts. Record the competitor's visible passage, the gap in your answer, and the exact proposed change. Send the writing brief to the editor, then retain the before-and-after record.

**Target long-tail questions.** "What is SEO" is contested. "What is technical SEO for ecommerce sites," "what is SEO for local restaurants," and "what is SEO for YouTube videos" have less competition and clearer intent.

**Give specific numbers with a source.** For "average cost of kitchen remodel," the weak answer is "Costs vary." The strong answer gives a range for a named region, the source, and the year: "A mid-range kitchen remodel in [region] costs [low] to [high], according to [source, year]." Use only figures you can cite.

**Date answers that change.** For time-sensitive queries, state the date in the answer: "As of February 2026, ..." Show a "Last updated" date. Refresh the figures on a schedule.

## Match the tactic to the page type

| Page type | Target queries | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Blog post | "How to" and "what is" | H2 plus a short answer or list |
| Product or comparison page | "[A] vs [B]" | Table |
| FAQ page | Direct questions | Question heading plus a short answer |
| Guide | Procedures | Numbered steps |
| Glossary | Definitions | 40- to 60-word paragraph |

## Track wins and losses

Keep one row per query, device, and location: observed snippet owner, source URL, edit date, observed recrawl date, and before/after impressions and clicks. Use equal finalized reporting periods. Search Console measures query performance; manual checks or rank tracking establish observed ownership. It does not give a per-session snippet attribution record.

Here is an illustrative monitoring record, not an observed site result:

| Checkpoint | Saved evidence | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Before edit | Competitor snippet screenshot; 28-day query baseline | Select the missing answer detail |
| After release, before observed recrawl | New passage and publication date | Keep collecting; selection remains untested |
| After observed recrawl | Same-location SERP checks; equal-period query export | Compare ownership and clicks; investigate other changes |

Measure three things:

- **Ownership.** The number of snippets you hold, and the share of target queries won. Ahrefs and Semrush both report this.
- **Traffic.** Click-through rate before and after the win, and organic sessions from snippet queries, in Search Console.
- **Retention.** Snippets you keep against snippets you lose, and your count against competitors.

Ahrefs Rank Tracker and Semrush Position Tracking record snippet gains and losses over time. Check your top targets by hand each month as well, because tools sample results from one location.

## Avoid five mistakes

**The answer comes too late.** An answer 500 words into the section is rarely extracted. Put it directly under the heading.

**The answer is too complex.** Snippets favor short, clear sentences. Aim for plain language, around a sixth- to eighth-grade reading level, and check it in Hemingway Editor.

**The format does not match.** If Google shows a list, a paragraph answer rarely wins. Match the format Google already uses.

**Markup instead of structure.** Structured data does not choose snippets. The heading, the list, and the table do.

**No defense.** Snippets change hands. Audit them each quarter and improve the answers. The featured snippet writing guide covers sentence-level technique for each format. The [search intent guide](/articles/search-intent-explained) helps you pick queries whose intent your page serves.
