For a small business website, start with questions your customers ask before contacting you. Publish the answers that staff can verify and maintain. A useful FAQ helps someone decide what to do next. Choose questions about service fit, preparation, location, and the request process. Leave an answer unpublished when the business has not resolved it. ## Collect questions from actual inquiries Ask the people who answer your phone and email to list repeated questions. Review public service descriptions and approved policies beside that list. Remove customer names and private details from the writing brief. Keep the customer's wording when it is clear. Replace vague internal labels with the words a visitor would recognize. Group variants that need the same answer. For example, “Do you serve my town?” and “How far do you travel?” might belong under one service-area question. Confirm the business's actual limits before drafting that answer. Use a central FAQ for questions shared across services. It does not require a separate page for every row. Link to an existing complete answer when that is enough. ## Write the answer before the sales message Open with the answer. Add the relevant limit or condition next. Finish with a useful link only when the visitor needs another step. Consider this hypothetical draft: “Do you offer weekend appointments? Weekend availability varies by service. Use the request form to ask about your preferred date.” Publish that wording only if the business confirms those facts. Avoid “Contact us to learn more” as the whole answer when staff already have information suitable for publication. Equally, do not invent an exact fee or response time to make the page feel complete. Assign an owner to each answer. Record its source and review trigger in the working document. A policy change should trigger a check wherever the old answer appears. ## Use headings and links people can understand Give each question a descriptive heading. Keep the answer together beneath it. If the design collapses answers, include keyboard and phone checks in the builder's acceptance plan. Google recommends crawlable links with descriptive anchor text. Link a preparation answer to the actual instructions rather than using the same vague “Learn more” label everywhere. A clear answer remains useful without a special search appearance. ## Remove outdated promises about FAQ search results Google's current documentation update says FAQ rich results are no longer shown in Google Search. Its former FAQPage documentation redirects to that removal notice. Do not commission an FAQ page on a promise of those rich results. Ask the builder to explain any proposed structured data separately from the visible questions and answers. Keep the project's acceptance criteria focused on the working page, accurate text, and useful links. ## Review with someone outside the business Ask a reader to find an answer, explain the condition, and identify the next step. Record where the page leaves them uncertain. Revise those passages before adding more questions.
