# Get engineering to ship your SEO fixes by writing them as engineering work.

SEO teams and engineering teams use different words for the same problems. The SEO lead says "crawl budget." Without a number and a route, the ticket reads as a vague marketing request. The SEO lead says "structured data." Without a spec, the ticket reads as more technical debt.

The result is a backlog of SEO tickets that sit for months. Canonical fixes, speed work, and rendering changes do not ship, and rankings stall.

Engineering teams accept measured problems, clear specs, and outcomes they can verify. This article shows how to write SEO work in those terms. It gives a translation table, three framings, a ticket template, a sprint slot, and answers to common pushback. The reader is the SEO lead or marketing manager who needs engineering time.

## Why SEO tickets stall

Three causes explain most stalled SEO work.

**SEO looks like marketing overhead.** Engineers build the product. SEO sits between product and marketing, and marketing owns the result. An engineer weighing a meta tag ticket against a customer feature request picks the feature.

Position SEO work as infrastructure, in the same class as caching or database tuning. It changes what the system outputs to crawlers and users.

**The request is vague.** "Improve page speed" is not a spec. Engineers need the pages, the metric, the current value, the target, and the definition of done.

A weak request: "Our site is slow. Fix it."

A strong request: "Homepage Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) at the 75th percentile is 4.2 seconds. The target is under 2.5 seconds. The audit shows render-blocking CSS and a 2.4 MB hero image. Proposal: inline the critical CSS, serve the hero as WebP at display size, and preload it. Done when field LCP is under 2.5 seconds."

The strong request states the current value, the target, the root causes, the fix, and the check. Note what it does not propose: lazy-loading the hero image. The hero is usually the LCP element, and lazy-loading it makes LCP worse.

**The impact is not quantified.** "SEO will drive more traffic" sounds speculative. State the size of the problem in the system's own numbers and the mechanism of the fix.

A strong case: "Pagination and filter URLs create 12,000 indexable duplicates of 800 category pages. The duplicates compete with the originals in Search Console. Canonical tags on the parameter URLs point Google to the 800 originals. Success: within 60 days, the Page indexing report lists the duplicates as 'Alternate page with proper canonical tag.' Impressions for the 800 pages rise."

Do not promise a ranking gain in positions or a traffic percentage borrowed from another company. If you have a result from a similar fix on your own site, cite it with the date.

## Translate SEO terms into engineering terms

| SEO term | Engineering translation |
|---|---|
| Crawl budget | Bot requests to the servers, and which URLs they spend them on |
| Duplicate content | Many URLs that return the same resource |
| Page speed | Time to First Byte (TTFB), LCP, and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) |
| Structured data | Machine-readable metadata, usually JSON-LD |
| Canonical tag | A hint that names the preferred URL for a resource; not a redirect |
| Hreflang | Links between locale versions of one page |
| XML sitemap | A list of routable URLs for crawler discovery |
| 404 errors | Routes that resolve to nothing |
| Redirect chain | A URL that resolves through several hops |

An example conversation:

> SEO: We have a crawl budget problem.
>
> Engineering: What does that mean?
>
> SEO: Googlebot requests about 500,000 URLs a month, and we have about 100,000 unique pages. The other requests go to duplicates from `?sort=` and `?color=` parameters. That load hits our servers and delays crawling of real pages. We need canonical tags on those parameter URLs, and we should stop linking to the sort variants.
>
> Engineering: So we deduplicate routes to reduce bot load.

The engineer now sees a routing problem with a measurable load.

## Frame the work as performance, architecture, or debt

### Performance

Engineers track performance already. Present speed fixes as performance work with a metric.

- **Deferred images.** SEO framing: "Lazy-loading improves Core Web Vitals." Engineering framing: "Lazy-loading off-screen images removes them from the initial network queue, which frees bandwidth for the LCP image."
- **Critical CSS.** SEO framing: "Inline CSS improves the speed score." Engineering framing: "Inlining the critical CSS removes a render-blocking request, so First Contentful Paint happens sooner."
- **Server-side rendering (SSR).** SEO framing: "SSR helps Google crawl JavaScript." Engineering framing: "SSR sends complete HTML in the first response. Users see content before the JavaScript bundle runs, and crawlers get the content without a rendering pass."

Be accurate about SSR. It usually improves First Contentful Paint and LCP. It can raise TTFB, because the server does more work per request. The [SSR guide](/articles/server-side-rendering-seo) covers the trade-offs and caching.

### Architecture

Structural fixes change how the system scales. Present them as architecture.

- **Canonical logic.** "Filters and sort options create 50,000 URLs for 5,000 resources. One canonical rule in the template maps each variant to its resource." The [canonical tags guide](/articles/canonical-tags-developers) has the implementation details.
- **Generated sitemaps.** "The static sitemap misses new pages. A job that queries the database for routable URLs and writes the XML keeps the sitemap complete without manual edits."
- **Hreflang from routing.** "Manual hreflang across 12 locales breaks each time we add a page. Generating the links from the locale routes keeps them consistent as we add locales."

### Technical debt

Cleanup removes known failure points. Present it as debt paydown.

- **Redirect chains.** "2,000 URLs resolve through three or more hops. Each hop is another round trip and another place to fail. Point every old URL at its final destination."
- **Broken internal links.** "500 internal links return 404. They are dead ends for users and wasted requests for crawlers. They also generate support tickets."
- **Structured data upkeep.** "Our Product markup uses properties Google no longer supports for rich results. Updating the template keeps the markup valid as Google's requirements change."

## Write SEO tickets like engineering tickets

An SEO ticket needs the same rigor as a feature ticket. A template:

```text
Title: Add canonical tags to filtered category URLs
Problem:
Filters (?color=, ?size=) create 2,000 category URLs for 200 categories.
Google indexes many of the filtered URLs, and they compete with the originals.
Root cause:
Filtered URLs have no canonical tag, so nothing names the preferred version.
Proposed solution:
Add a canonical tag on every filtered URL that points to the unfiltered category URL.
- /category/shoes?color=red -> canonical /category/shoes
- /category/shoes?size=10 -> canonical /category/shoes
Technical spec:
- Add <link rel="canonical" href="[primary URL]"> in <head>
- Primary URL = category URL without query parameters
- Implement in templates/category.html
Acceptance criteria:
- Every filtered category URL outputs exactly one canonical tag
- The canonical points to the unfiltered URL
- Automated test covers 10 sample URLs
Success measure:
- Page indexing report shows the filtered URLs as alternates within 30 to 60 days
- Impressions for the 200 category URLs, compared with the 28 days before release
Effort estimate: 5 story points
Priority: P0
```

The ticket carries the problem, the root cause, the fix, the spec, the acceptance criteria, and a measure. It leaves out a promised ranking gain. For more ticket formats, see [SEO user stories for engineering](/articles/seo-user-stories-engineering).

One caution on duplicates from tracking parameters such as `?utm_source=` and `?ref=`: use a canonical tag to the clean URL. Do not also add `noindex` to the same URLs. The two tags send conflicting signals. Pick one method for each URL.

## Get a slot in sprint planning

A ticket filed and left in the backlog waits. Take part in planning.

1. Before planning, review the backlog and pick the top one to three SEO items.
2. In planning, present each item with its effort estimate and measure.
3. Agree on a standing share of capacity for SEO work.

An example sprint allocation:

| Task | Story points | Impact | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canonical tags on category filters | 5 | Consolidates about 2,000 duplicates | P0 |
| Product markup on product pages | 3 | Product rich result eligibility | P1 |
| Defer off-screen blog images | 2 | Frees bandwidth for the LCP image | P1 |

That is 10 points of a 50-point sprint, or 20% for one sprint. A standing share of 5 to 10% covers routine SEO maintenance. Large projects such as SSR or a migration need their own sprints. The guide on [engineering time allocation for SEO](/articles/engineering-time-allocation-seo) covers how to size the share.

## Share one dashboard

When both teams watch the same numbers, engineers see what their work changed.

| Metric | Source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) | Search Console | Field performance |
| Page indexing and crawl stats | Search Console | Crawl and index health |
| Redirect chains | Screaming Frog | Debt |
| Broken links | Screaming Frog | Reliability |
| Organic traffic | Google Analytics 4 | Business result |

When a fix ships, post the result where engineering sees it. Name the change, the metric that moved, and the team. "Canonical fix shipped in sprint 14. The Page indexing report now shows 1,800 filtered URLs as alternates." That message shows that the work had an effect. Report the number as measured, even when it is small.

## Answer common pushback

**"This isn't a priority right now."** Ask for a small standing share, for example two story points a sprint, for the top fixes ranked by impact. The share moves the top fixes forward and does not block feature work.

**"We don't have resources."** Offer to write the spec, the test cases, and implementation examples. That turns a research task into a review and a deploy.

**"SEO is too slow to measure."** Name the leading indicators you can see in two weeks: crawl errors, indexed page counts, and Core Web Vitals. Traffic changes take longer, often months, and you report them separately.

**"We tried SEO and it didn't work."** Ask what was tried. Piecemeal edits, such as meta tags alone, often show nothing. Structural fixes such as canonical logic or rendering have more durable effects.

**"This will break something."** Agree that changes carry risk. Propose staging first, automated tests, a feature flag, and a rollback plan.

If engineering declines all SEO work, take the question to leadership with two numbers. The first is the share of revenue or leads from organic search. The second is what the open issues put at risk. The [CTO priorities guide](/articles/cto-seo-engineering-priorities) shows how the engineering side weighs these requests.

When SEO and engineering disagree on the approach, run a pilot. Ship the change to a group of pages, measure against a control group, and then scale. When SEO and user experience seem to conflict, look for the fix that serves both. Descriptive anchor text, for example, helps accessibility and crawling.

## Tools both teams use

Track SEO tickets in the same system as feature work: Jira, Linear, or Asana. Audit with Screaming Frog, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and Lighthouse. Monitor server timing with Datadog or New Relic, and JavaScript errors that break rendering with Sentry.

SEO leads do not need to write production code. A working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript makes the conversation faster, because you can read the template and point at the line.
