# Put E-E-A-T signals into each article so readers and Google can trust it.

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It comes from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, the manual that human raters use to judge search results. It is not one ranking factor with one score.

Google uses the raters' judgments to evaluate whether its ranking systems work. The ratings do not change the ranking of the page they rate. The ranking systems look for signals that line up with what raters reward, so the framework still describes what a strong page looks like.

For a writer, E-E-A-T is a checklist of evidence. It asks whether the page shows who wrote it, what that person did, why the reader can believe it, and where the facts come from. This article covers each part, the extra weight in sensitive topics, AI drafts, freelance bylines, and an audit you can run on existing work.

## What each letter asks

**Experience** asks whether the author had direct involvement with the topic. Examples include a product review by a user of the product, tax guidance by a person who files returns, and a recipe by its cook. Google added this letter in December 2022.

**Expertise** asks whether the author has deep knowledge of the subject. Degrees, licenses, certifications, published work, and years of practice are the usual evidence.

**Authoritativeness** asks whether others recognize the author or the site as a source. Citations from other experts, editorial links, and media mentions are the evidence.

**Trustworthiness** asks whether the reader can rely on the page and the site. Accuracy, sources, transparency about who runs the site, security, and honest disclosure are the evidence. The rater guidelines treat trust as the most important of the four. A page with experience and expertise but false claims still fails.

| Letter | Evidence on the page | Weak signs |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | Original photos, measurements, first-hand detail | Stock photos, vague praise |
| Expertise | Byline with credentials, linked bio | No author, no bio |
| Authoritativeness | Editorial links, mentions, citations by peers | No outside recognition |
| Trustworthiness | Sources, disclosures, contact details, HTTPS | Errors, hidden affiliations |

## Give sensitive topics more evidence

Google calls one group of topics "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL). These topics can affect a reader's health, money, safety, or legal position. Examples include symptoms and treatments, investing and taxes, contracts and family law, home safety, and news about crises or elections.

Raters hold YMYL pages to a higher standard. An anonymous post about blood pressure medication competes with pages from hospitals and medical publishers. Accurate information alone does not close that gap. The page needs a qualified author or reviewer, primary sources, and a clear owner.

Other topics give more room. A film review does not need a film degree, and a recipe does not need a culinary license. Experience still helps there: photos of the dish you cooked, or notes on a specific scene, show the reader that you did the thing. The guides on [financial services YMYL content](/articles/seo-financial-services-ymyl) and [healthcare SEO compliance](/articles/seo-healthcare-compliance) cover the review process for two YMYL fields.

## Show experience with specifics

A general statement shows no experience. A specific observation shows use. Compare two versions of a sentence about an espresso machine. The second version is an illustration of the method, not a tested review.

Generic:

> The Breville Barista Express is a good espresso machine.

Specific:

> The Breville Barista Express has a built-in burr grinder and PID temperature control. I pulled 30 shots during testing, and extraction time averaged 28 seconds. The steam wand took about twice as long as my previous machine to reach microfoam.

The specific version carries four things: a count of tests, measurements, a comparison with an alternative, and a trade-off. Each one is a detail that only a person who used the machine can supply.

Use these four methods to show experience:

- **Write in the first person where you did the work.** "I configured the lead scoring workflow" shows involvement. "The software can be configured" does not.
- **Give the test conditions and the date.** "I tested the [product] in [month and year] for three weeks in a two-cat house. Battery life on [mode] averaged [measured] minutes against the maker's claim of [claimed]." Experience ages, so the date tells the reader how current it is.
- **Use original photos and screenshots.** Photograph the product in your workspace, the feature you describe, and the result. Stock photos show nothing about use.
- **Describe the image in the alt text.** For a screenshot, name what it shows: "Search Console chart of organic clicks before and after the product markup change."

Do not invent the specifics. A made-up measurement is a trust failure that outweighs the experience signal it imitates.

## Show expertise through the byline and the bio

Every article needs a byline that names the author and the qualification that matters for the topic.

A weak byline: "Written by Sarah."

A strong byline: "Written by [full name], [credential] | [years] years in [specific field] | Contributor to [publication]."

The strong byline has a credential, a specific field, and outside validation. Link it to an author bio page. A bio page template:

```markdown
## About [Full name]
[Full name] is a [credential] who works on [specific field].
[One sentence on the scope of practice, with a verifiable number only if true.]
### Credentials
- [License or certification], [issuing body], [year]
- [Degree], [institution], [year]
### Published work
- Contributor, [publication] ([years])
- [Book or report title], [publisher], [year]
### Speaking
- [Event name], [year]
[LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/[handle]) | [X](https://x.com/[handle])
```

Link the bio from every article that person writes. Mark up the author with `Person` structured data, and use `sameAs` to point at the same profiles the bio lists. This helps Google connect the author's pages to one entity.

If you have no formal credentials, build expertise in public. Publish case studies from your own work. Write for industry publications such as Search Engine Journal or Content Marketing Institute. Cite your own earlier research where it applies. A self-citation should name the study, the date, the sample, and the finding, and link to the full method. Do not cite a study you cannot link.

## Earn authority from outside

Authority comes from other people. You cannot write it into your own page, but you can give others reasons to cite you.

**Publish original research.** Surveys, experiments, and data studies attract citations because other writers cannot produce the data themselves. Backlinko's 2020 study of 11.8 million Google search results is one example of this kind of asset.

**Answer journalist queries.** Reporter request services match journalists with expert sources, and a quote often comes with a link. These services change hands. HARO closed in December 2024 after a rebrand to Connectively. Featured.com relaunched it in April 2025. Check which services operate before you build a routine around one.

**Build linkable assets.** Calculators, datasets, templates, and reference tables earn links over time.

**Pitch roundups.** Expert roundups and "best of" lists in your niche mention sources. Offer a quote or a short case study, not a request for inclusion.

**Keep a consistent public profile.** A LinkedIn profile, an X account, forum answers, and conference speaker pages help readers and Google confirm who you are. Follower counts are not a ranking factor. The profiles matter because they point to the same person as the byline.

A Wikipedia entry for the author or the publication feeds the Knowledge Graph. Wikipedia admits only subjects with significant coverage in several independent sources, such as books from recognized publishers, press coverage, or awards from credible bodies. Its conflict-of-interest guideline discourages writing an article about yourself. If you do not qualify, contribute to topic pages in your field under your real name.

## Make the page and the site trustworthy

Trust is the base. Without it, the other three letters do not help.

**Cite primary sources.** Link to journals, government publications, and original industry reports. Name the source, the year, and the exact figure.

Weak: "Studies show that HTTPS helps rankings."

Strong: "Google announced HTTPS as a lightweight ranking signal on its Webmaster Central Blog in August 2014."

**Disclose affiliate links.** The US Federal Trade Commission requires clear disclosure of paid relationships. Put a short statement at the top of the article and near the links: "This article contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you."

**Publish an About page and a Contact page.** The About page says who runs the site, why, and under what editorial standards. A template:

```markdown
## About [Site name]
[Site name] publishes [topic] guides for [reader], founded in [year] by [name, credential].
### Editorial standards
[Credential holders] write or review every article. We cite [primary source types].
We do not give personal [tax/legal/medical] advice. Ask a licensed professional about your situation.
### Contact
Email: editor@example.com
```

**Secure the site.** Browsers mark HTTP pages "Not Secure." Most hosts include a TLS certificate, and Let's Encrypt issues them at no charge.

**Keep content current.** For topics that change, show a "Last updated" date and review high-traffic pages every quarter. Update statistics, tools, and methods, and change the date only when the content changed.

## Use AI drafts without losing the evidence

AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude write fluent text. They cannot test a product, run an experiment, or report what happened on a client project. Google's guidance from February 2023 rewards helpful content however it is produced. Its March 2024 spam policy on scaled content abuse targets pages made at volume to manipulate rankings, with or without AI.

Use AI for structure and first drafts. Then add what only you can add:

1. Replace general claims with your own measurements and examples.
2. Check every fact the draft states, and link the primary source.
3. Add the first-person detail from your work.
4. Cut sentences that could appear on any page about the topic.

An illustrative before and after:

> AI draft: Email marketing is an effective channel for driving sales.
>
> Edited: Email drove [share] of our [quarter] revenue. A six-email launch sequence with behavioral triggers in Klaviyo converted [rate] of subscribers, [multiple] our baseline.

The edit adds results, first-person involvement, and a named tool. Use only numbers from your own records. Google does not require an AI disclosure. On YMYL pages, name the person who checked the content. Your organization's [AI content policy](/articles/seo-ai-content-policy-organization) decides what you disclose.

## Keep credit as a freelancer

Freelance work often runs under the client's byline, which limits your own signals. Ask for a named byline with a link to your site or LinkedIn profile. Keep a portfolio site with links to the published pieces. Publish in your niche on your own site. Write for industry publications. Ask clients and editors for LinkedIn recommendations.

Ghostwritten work still counts with future clients when you can show it. The guide to [building a freelance SEO portfolio](/articles/freelance-seo-portfolio-building) covers how to present work that carries someone else's name.

## Audit an existing library

There is no E-E-A-T score. You audit against the rater guidelines and track proxies: referring domains, branded search volume, and rankings on competitive queries. Start with the high-traffic pages in your most competitive or most sensitive topics.

For each article, answer these questions:

| Letter | Questions |
|---|---|
| Experience | Does the author show direct involvement? Are there measurements, conditions, or first-hand detail? Are there original images? |
| Expertise | Does the byline name a relevant credential? Is there a linked bio? Does the author have published work elsewhere? |
| Authoritativeness | Do reputable sites link to the page or the site? Is the author cited or quoted elsewhere? |
| Trustworthiness | Does each claim have a primary source? Are affiliations disclosed? Are About and Contact pages present? Is the site on HTTPS? |

Then fix the gaps by letter. For weak experience, add first-person detail, original images, and measurements. For weak expertise, expand the bio, link outside publications, or add a credentialed co-author or reviewer. For weak authority, publish original research and pitch it. For weak trust, add sources, disclosures, and the About and Contact pages.

Three repair patterns appear often. A health site with anonymous symptom guides adds licensed clinicians as authors or reviewers, bio pages with credentials, and citations to PubMed and government guidance. A finance blog without links publishes a survey with its own data and pitches it to reporters. A store with manufacturer copy photographs its products in use and adds first-person tests with measurements. The [SEO writing checklist](/articles/seo-writing-checklist-writers) turns the fixes into a pre-publish check.
