# Plan buying guides and how-to content that send shoppers to your category pages.

A store's product pages rank for model names, and its category pages rank for "hiking boots." Before a shopper types either, they search for something else. They ask how to choose boots for wet trails, and whether a waterproof boot is too hot in summer. They ask how a European size maps to a US size. Those searches go to other sites, and so does the first impression.

Ecommerce content beyond products answers the questions shoppers ask before and after a purchase. It reaches people earlier than a category page can. It also sends them to the category page with the choice already narrowed. This article shows you how to find those questions, pick a format for each, and connect the content to the pages that sell.

## Know what content can do that product pages cannot

A product page answers "is this the product I want?" A category page answers "which of these products do I want?" Neither answers "what should I look for?" or "how do I use this?"

Content fills three gaps:

- before the purchase, it helps a shopper define the need, for example with a buying guide or a comparison of two materials;
- at the decision, it removes a doubt, for example with a size guide or a fit guide for wide feet;
- after the purchase, it helps the buyer use the product, for example with a care guide or a break-in guide.

Each article must lead to a page that sells. An article that ranks and links nowhere is a traffic report, not a sales channel.

## Collect the questions shoppers ask

Collect questions from five sources:

1. Customer service email, chat logs, and return reasons. Returns show where shoppers chose wrong.
2. Product reviews and on-site questions. Shoppers repeat the same concerns in their own words.
3. The "People also ask" boxes and related searches for your category phrases.
4. Search Console queries for your existing pages that contain question words such as "how," "which," "vs," and "best."
5. Your keyword research tool, filtered to question phrases around each category.

Write each question in the shopper's words. Group questions that one article can answer. A shopper who asks "how should hiking boots fit" and one who asks "how much toe room in hiking boots" need the same article.

## Match each question to a format

The search results tell you the format. Search each question and check what ranks. Then pick one of these formats:

| Format | Answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Buying guide | Which features matter and how to choose | How to choose hiking boots for wet trails |
| Comparison | How two options differ | Waterproof vs breathable hiking boots |
| Fit or size guide | Which size or fit to buy | Hiking boot size guide with a conversion chart |
| How-to or care guide | How to use or maintain the product | How to break in leather hiking boots |
| Use-case page | Which products suit a specific need | Hiking boots for wide feet |
| Glossary entry | What a term means | What a boot shank does |

Some questions belong on a category page, not in an article. "Hiking boots for wide feet" may deserve its own category if you stock enough wide models. If the results for the question show product lists, build or improve the category instead of writing an article. The category side of this decision is in [ecommerce category page SEO](/articles/ecommerce-category-page-seo).

For the general link between intent and format, read [search intent content strategy](/articles/search-intent-content-strategy).

## Write guides that show real experience

Google's documentation on how to write high-quality reviews lists best practices for review and comparison content (checked September 2026). The guidance asks for evaluation from the user's point of view. It asks for evidence of your own experience, such as visuals and quantitative measurements. It also asks what sets a product apart and how it compares with alternatives. Benefits, drawbacks, and the key factors for the decision complete the list. A store can meet these standards better than most affiliate sites, because it handles the products.

Put that advantage on the page:

- photograph the products in use, not only on a white background;
- state measurements you took yourself, such as the weight of a boot in a stated size;
- name the drawbacks, including drawbacks of products you sell;
- say who should not buy a product, and what they should buy instead;
- name the staff member who wrote or reviewed the guide, with their relevant experience.

Do not copy manufacturer text into guides. It adds nothing that the manufacturer's own site lacks. For the writer's side of experience and expertise, read [E-E-A-T for content writers](/articles/eeat-content-writers).

## Link every article to the pages that sell

Link each article to the category or product pages that act on its answer. Place the link where the shopper makes the decision, not only at the end. A buying guide that explains waterproof membranes links to the waterproof category in the paragraph that explains them.

Link back as well. Add a short "How to choose" link on the category page that points to the buying guide. Shoppers who are not ready to pick a product get help, and the guide gets links from a strong page.

Group the articles into clusters around each category. A category page, its buying guide, its size guide, and its care guide form one cluster. Links inside the cluster show the depth of your coverage of that topic. The principle is in [topical authority content strategy](/articles/topical-authority-content-strategy).

Keep the article from competing with the category. The article targets the question; the category targets the product phrase. If both pages start to rank for the same phrase, adjust the article's title and headings toward the question.

## Plan around the calendar

Many ecommerce questions follow the season. Shoppers ask about winter boot care in autumn and about breathable boots in spring. Publish or refresh each seasonal article several weeks before demand rises, so that it has time to be crawled and ranked. The timing method is in [seasonal SEO for ecommerce](/articles/seasonal-seo-ecommerce).

## Worked example: one category cluster

The inputs are hypothetical. A store sells hiking boots in 40 sizes and 12 colors, with waterproof and non-waterproof models. Its category pages rank for broad phrases, but it has no content beyond products.

**Step 1: collect questions.** The owner exports three months of customer service email and the return reasons. The top return reason is "too small." The most common pre-sale question is "will these be too hot in summer?" Search Console shows impressions for "hiking boot size chart" on a product page that does not answer it.

**Step 2: group and choose formats.** The owner groups the questions into four articles. They are a size and fit guide, a waterproof and breathable comparison, a wet-trail buying guide, and a break-in and care guide. A search for "hiking boots for wide feet" shows product lists. So the owner adds a wide-fit category instead of an article.

**Step 3: write with evidence.** A staff member who hikes writes the comparison. It includes photos of both boot types after a wet hike and the weight of each boot in one stated size. It names one situation where the non-waterproof boot is the better choice.

**Step 4: link.** Each article links to the matching category in the paragraph where the choice happens. Each category page gets a "How to choose" link to its guide. Each product page links to the size guide next to the size selector.

**Step 5: measure.** For each article, the owner records impressions and clicks from Search Console. From GA4, the owner records the sessions that continue to a category or product page. For the size guide, the owner also tracks the share of returns with the reason "too small." The example stops at the measurement. The owner compares the numbers after one and three months.

## Measure content by what it sends onward

Judge each article by three numbers:

- its own organic impressions and clicks, from Search Console;
- the share of its sessions that continue to a category or product page, from GA4 path or landing page reports;
- the purchases it assists, from the GA4 attribution reports, because shoppers who read a guide often buy on a later visit.

A guide with modest traffic that sends many shoppers to a category earns its place. A guide with high traffic that sends nobody onward needs better links or a different target.

Refresh the articles when the products change. A buying guide that recommends discontinued models loses trust and sends shoppers to dead pages.
