# Your AI Remembers You. Do You Own the Memory.

An AI tool remembers your preferred offer, an old client constraint, and the way you format proposals. Then the account owner changes, the plan changes, or the team moves tools. Nobody can show which remembered facts are current or move the working record into the next system.

The product remembered you. The business did not establish ownership of the memory.

Ownership is not a slogan about local files or vendors. It is a set of tests. Can an authorized person inspect the record, correct it, export it, transfer the job, and keep using the important parts after the current interface is gone?

## Vendor memory can still be useful

Do not begin with the claim that vendors have no memory. Current products do provide memory features. For a business-workspace comparison against maintained files, read [ChatGPT Business vs Owned Business Memory.](/articles/owned-business-memory-vs-chatgpt-team-projects)

OpenAI documents a continually updated ChatGPT memory summary based on past chats, with controls to review, correct, delete, or turn memory off. [OpenAI Memory FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq)

Anthropic documents Claude memory, chat search, project-separated memory, and memory import and export. [Claude chat search and memory](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context) [Claude memory import and export](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587-import-and-export-your-memory-from-claude)

These features can reduce repeated explanation. The ownership question starts after that benefit is acknowledged.

Can the business identify the controlling record? Can it distinguish a helpful preference from an approved operating decision? Can it test what another tool receives?

## Ownership has seven parts

Use seven checks for one recurring job.

**Custody.** An authorized person can obtain the record or a usable representation of it.

**Readability.** A person can inspect the important facts, decisions, corrections, and source references without relying only on model output.

**Authority.** The record says which item governs when old and new material conflict.

**Correction.** A named owner can change the controlling fact and prove the next run uses the change.

**Portability.** Another supported tool can receive the same approved packet and complete the job.

**Shutdown.** The company knows what remains readable and what stops when the subscription, connector, or hosted feature ends.

**Transfer.** A new authorized operator can follow the runbook from a clean start.

An export can satisfy part of custody. It does not prove the other six parts.

## Inspect `memory-ownership-test.md`

Write the ownership claim as a testable file.

```text
job:: prepare weekly account brief
record_owner:: account operations
canonical_path:: business-memory/accounts/ACCT-1001/
controlling_files:: context.md, decisions.md, corrections.md, task-brief.md
vendor_features_used:: chat history, project memory, file attachment
export_checked_on:: 2026.08.18
replacement_route:: generic file-capable model adapter
shutdown_test:: run from canonical files without prior chat
transfer_test:: new operator follows runbook from clean session
pass_condition:: correct facts, cited sources, approved structure, no external send
# Record pass, fail, or blocked and an evidence path for each part.
custody:: blocked | evidence pending
readability:: blocked | evidence pending
authority:: blocked | evidence pending
correction:: blocked | evidence pending
portability:: blocked | evidence pending
shutdown:: blocked | evidence pending
transfer:: blocked | evidence pending
```

The file does not deny that product memory exists. It records how product memory relates to the company-owned path.

Put a date beside provider checks. Product controls and plan availability change. The ownership test should say what was inspected, not make an undated promise.

## Start with one job, not every remembered detail

You do not need to convert every personal preference and old conversation into formal policy.

Choose one recurring job with a real [reconstruction](/articles/stop-re-explaining-your-business-to-ai) cost. It might be a weekly client brief, proposal draft, support escalation summary, or content approval packet.

List the few facts and decisions that control that job. Confirm them against current sources. Record corrections separately. Label old conversations as history.

This is where [plain text AI memory](/articles/plain-text-ai-memory) helps. A small set of readable files gives people and tools a stable interface. Plain text still needs access control, backup, review, and a responsible owner.

## Distinguish export from operating memory

OpenAI documents a data export for eligible ChatGPT accounts. The resulting archive can include chat history and other account data. OpenAI also states that uploading exported conversations into another ChatGPT account is not a full migration. It does not recreate the original sidebar or move every product object. [OpenAI data export](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data) [OpenAI conversation transfer](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9106926-transfer-exported-conversations-between-chatgpt-accounts)

Anthropic documents memory import and export. That supports custody and portability at the product-memory layer. It does not determine which client decision should govern a business workflow.

Treat exports as source archives. Review them. Promote only current, confirmed material into the maintained path. Keep the original archive for evidence.

Do not ask a model to turn an entire archive into truth in one pass. A polished summary can still merge abandoned ideas, outdated prices, and unsupported conclusions.

## Run the seven-part test

Use synthetic or approved low-risk material first.

1. Export or inspect the available product-memory record.
2. Locate the current business fact in an authoritative source.
3. Put that fact and its source in the canonical path.
4. Add one accepted correction with an effective date.
5. Start a fresh session in the current tool.
6. Run the job using only the maintained packet.
7. Repeat through a second supported route.
8. Remove one required file and confirm both routes stop.
9. Give the runbook to a new authorized operator.
10. Record pass, fail, or blocked for every ownership part.

The outputs need not match word for word. They must use the same current facts, honor the same correction, produce the required structure, and stop before the same external action.

## Test access and revocation

Ownership includes knowing who can read and change the record.

Record the person or role that may edit each controlling file. Remove access in a test environment and confirm the next run stops. Check derived copies such as indexes, caches, synced folders, and exported packets.

A local folder with broad, undocumented access is not strong ownership. A vendor workspace with clear export, access, and correction controls may satisfy some ownership needs. Judge the implemented path from evidence.

## Test the shutdown day

Ask what happens when you stop paying or disable the current route. For the replacement-model test using the same record, read [Replace the AI Model and Keep Your Business Memory.](/articles/replace-the-model-keep-business-memory)

The [repo transfer and client handoff](/articles/transfer-the-repo-client-handoff) should identify files, runbook, environment-variable names, adapters, tests, receipts, and support boundaries. The buyer does not need every vendor feature to keep working. The buyer needs the durable record and replacement path to remain understandable.

Run the job without prior chat history. If it passes from the maintained packet, you have evidence that the essential business context is not trapped in remembered conversation alone.

Then repeat the test after a routine change. Update one approved decision, increment the record version, and run both routes again. Ownership includes the ability to maintain the record after handoff. A one-time export that nobody can safely update becomes another archive. Record who accepted the change, which file changed, and which rerun proved the new decision reached the output.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The ownership review may inventory files, inspect provider controls, export an authorized account, create a review queue, and run isolated tests.

It must stop before deleting memories, changing retention, removing user access, canceling a subscription, rotating credentials, connecting a live data source, or moving real client material into another product.

It also stops when account ownership is unresolved or the export includes a data class outside the approved job. Preserve the archive. Narrow the review. Ask the responsible owner.

The review can propose which records should become authoritative. A human owner accepts that promotion.

## Questions about Your AI Remembers You. Do You Own the Memory?

### Who owns and who has right to the actual data you produce?

Ownership requires more than an export. Test custody, readability, authority, correction, portability, shutdown, and transfer for one recurring job, with a named owner and a maintained packet outside the vendor interface.

### Can ChatGPT's memory be transferable?

An export can provide custody evidence, but it does not prove that another tool can run the job correctly. Promote only current, confirmed material into a maintained business path, then test the same packet through a second supported route.

### Is there a way to export the content from one specific chat inside a project?

Treat exports as source archives rather than operating memory. Review the archive, promote confirmed current facts and decisions into owned files, and retain the original export as evidence.
