# Compare a DIY Obsidian and Claude Code setup with a scoped build and choose your route.

You have seen tutorials that pair an Obsidian vault with Claude Code and call the result a second brain for a business. You can build that system yourself. The harder question is who designs it, tests it, and keeps it correct after the first demo works.

For a technical owner who enjoys maintaining files, instructions, version control, and tests, DIY may be the better choice. A scoped, reviewed build is for a different constraint. You know the outcome, but you do not want to design, test, document, and review the operating system alone.

A scoped build should add verified source boundaries, correction handling, receipts, acceptance evidence, and a handoff. It should not bill you for installing two tools and naming folders. The comparison is about labor and assurance, not about what is possible.

## What the DIY stack does well

Obsidian stores notes in a vault. Its documentation defines a vault as a folder on your file system that holds notes and an `.obsidian` configuration folder. A local vault is the copy on each of your devices, and it stays fully functional offline. You can choose Obsidian Sync, another file-sync service, version control, or no sync. [Obsidian: Local and remote vaults](https://obsidian.md/help/sync/vault-types) [Obsidian: Sync notes across devices](https://obsidian.md/help/sync-notes)

Claude Code runs against files and tools on your machine. Anthropic documents two persistent context mechanisms. The first is instruction files such as `CLAUDE.md`, which you write. The second is auto memory: notes that Claude writes itself, stored as editable Markdown under a machine-local project path. You can share `CLAUDE.md` files through a repository, scope them by directory, and import other files into them. You can inspect, edit, or delete auto memory at any time. [Anthropic: How Claude remembers your project](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/memory)

Together, these products give a capable operator direct access to the context files. You can read the notes in Obsidian, an editor, a terminal, or another model tool. Git can record changes. Ordinary backup tools can copy the vault. Claude can search, edit, summarize, and create files under the permissions you grant.

Check the account requirement before you start. As checked September 25, 2026, Claude Code needs a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code. [Anthropic: Advanced setup](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/setup)

Choose DIY when you can maintain the system, tolerate experimentation, and verify your own work. You will understand the architecture better because you built it. You can also change direction without waiting for a service provider.

## Where memory and context live

In a disciplined DIY setup, business sources live inside a local vault or another folder you control. Shared instructions live in `CLAUDE.md` or `.claude/rules/` files. Private project-specific instructions can live in `CLAUDE.local.md`. Claude Code auto memory lives in a machine-local directory that Anthropic documents separately from the repository.

These locations do not all have the same authority.

The vault may contain approved business records, raw archives, private notes, and generated drafts. `CLAUDE.md` tells Claude how to work. Auto memory contains model-maintained learnings. Git records selected files, but it does not protect files that nobody committed. Obsidian Sync copies configured vault files, but it does not replace an independent backup.

You own and control the local files. You also accept responsibility for permissions, backups, secrets, sync conflicts, repository exposure, and deletion. Local custody removes one kind of dependence and adds operating work.

Local storage is not local processing. The vault, `CLAUDE.md`, and auto memory stay on your disk. The text that a Claude Code session reads goes to Anthropic, or to the cloud provider you route Claude Code through, for processing. Retention and training terms depend on your plan. Check those terms before you point a session at client records or regulated data.

The [Obsidian business-memory guide](/articles/obsidian-ai-memory-for-business) shows how to separate raw material, maintained records, and instructions. That separation keeps "everything in the vault" from becoming one undifferentiated prompt.

## What you keep if you stop paying

As checked September 25, 2026, Obsidian says that it keeps remote-vault data for one month after a Sync subscription expires. Local vaults on your devices are unaffected. After that month, remote vaults may be removed. The local files remain on the devices where you stored them. [Obsidian: Sync FAQ](https://obsidian.md/help/sync/faq)

As checked September 25, 2026, Obsidian itself is free to use, including for work. Its commercial license is optional support and adds no application features. [Obsidian: Commercial license](https://obsidian.md/help/teams/license)

If Claude access or billing ends, the files you control remain. That covers the vault, repository, `CLAUDE.md`, rules, task briefs, correction logs, tests, and receipts. Anthropic's documentation establishes that these files and auto memory are stored locally. That does not mean the paid model, hosted features, or every connector stays available. Another tool can read the durable files, but adapters and prompts may need changes.

Run the exit test in five steps:

1. Disconnect the model from the fixture.
2. Open every authoritative record with an ordinary text editor.
3. Restore the vault from backup into a clean folder.
4. Run the task with a replacement model or a manual process.
5. Confirm that the approved facts, correction, and stopping point survive.

The [model-switching guide](/articles/switch-ai-models-without-losing-context) explains why the expected result should remain stable even when the model-specific adapter changes.

## The hidden work in DIY

You can create a vault in minutes. The real job is to maintain a trustworthy operating record.

You need a source hierarchy so current policies beat old transcripts. You need stable identifiers for clients, projects, and decisions. You need a correction path that changes the next run. You need to isolate sensitive contexts. You need task contracts that say what the agent reads, writes, and must not do. You need fixtures for normal, blocked, failed, and no-work states.

You also need operations:

- backups that you have restored, not only scheduled;
- version control rules and secret exclusions;
- sync-conflict handling;
- model and connector credentials;
- update and rollback procedures;
- run receipts;
- an owner who can maintain all of it.

Claude Code auto memory needs its own boundary. Anthropic says auto memory is machine-local and that Claude writes it. Treat it as useful working memory, not the only location for an approved business rule. After review, promote important facts and corrections into the maintained record.

Many "second brain" tutorials stop before this work. A retrieval demo proves that the model can find a note. It does not prove that the right source wins or that a wrong source is rejected. It also does not prove that an external action stops, or that a new operator can recover the system.

## What a scoped, reviewed build should add

A scoped build begins with a written finish line: a named outcome, source set, and acceptance line. For example: "Prepare the weekly account brief from approved CRM and meeting sources, apply recorded corrections, and stop before sending."

Before work starts, the written scope states the result, required inputs, exclusions, fee, and acceptance checks. The build then produces the files and adapters that the result needs. A reviewer checks the result against that scope before it counts as accepted. Review matters because generated configuration and code can look finished and still fail an edge case.

The written scope should say which of these you receive:

- the maintained context path and source-role definitions;
- task and output contracts;
- model or tool adapters;
- tests for normal and failure cases;
- approval and stopping boundaries;
- run receipts;
- backup, restore, and replacement notes;
- the acceptance decision and remaining dependencies.

The [build acceptance-list guide](/articles/what-a-build-acceptance-list-contains) provides the binary checks. "The vault is organized" is not acceptance. "A clean operator can produce the approved brief from named sources and no external message is sent" can be tested.

The builder should not hide behind a proprietary control plane. Files and accounts that you control should hold the durable system wherever practical. The scope should list, test, and accept any remaining vendor dependency.

## Decide with five questions

Answer these questions in writing before you choose a route. Each answer points toward DIY or toward a scoped build.

| Question | Points toward DIY | Points toward a scoped build |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Can you name the outcome, sources, and acceptance line? | Not yet, and you want to learn by trial | Yes, in one or two sentences |
| What happens when an output is wrong? | You fix a draft before anyone sees it | A client, record, or payment is affected |
| Who maintains the system after launch? | You, and you want that work | A nontechnical operator or a new hire |
| How many systems does the job touch? | One vault and one repository | A CRM, email, shared drives, or separated client contexts |
| Which costs more, your learning time or a delay? | Your time is available and the deadline is soft | Each week of delay has a real cost |

If the answers split, start DIY on the lowest-consequence part. Scope the rest later.

Consider two fictional owners. The first runs a two-person bookkeeping practice and maintains her own tools. She wants a weekly draft of open client questions from her own notes. She reads every draft before anything goes out. Each answer points to DIY: one vault, one `CLAUDE.md`, one recurring output, and a restore test before any automation.

The second runs a three-location HVAC company. The office manager must produce a weekly dispatch summary from the CRM, technician notes, and customer emails. Parts of that summary reach customers, and the manager does not write code. Here the answers point to a scoped build. The finish line names the sources, keeps each location's records separate, and stops before any message goes out without review.

## When DIY is the right choice

Build it yourself when the system is part of your craft and the first use case is low consequence. You also need time to learn from failed fixtures. DIY is also right when the workflow changes weekly and a specification would take longer than a rebuild.

Start with one outcome. Keep the source packet small. Use synthetic data. Put every external write behind review. Record the first correction. Restore from backup before you add automation.

Do not buy a build only because folder structure looks hard. Read the official documentation, create a small vault, write one `CLAUDE.md`, and test one recurring output. If it works and you want to maintain it, keep going.

## When a scoped, reviewed build is the right choice

Use a scoped build when delay costs more than the build or the outcome touches several systems. It also fits when acceptance needs independent review or a nontechnical operator must take over. Sensitive contexts that need separation, and workflows with external consequences, point the same way.

A scoped build is a poor fit when you cannot name the outcome, sources, and acceptance line. Work through that uncertainty first, in your own brief.

If you need a broader engagement than one defined outcome, compare [AI agency and consultancy fit](/articles/scale-with-search-vs-ai-agency).

## How Scale With Search scopes a build

The fee is in the written scope, not on this page. A memory system or business tool is software with its own defined inputs, output, and acceptance. It gets its own written scope, not a website package. You pay for every build in full before work starts, and all sales are final.

You can stay DIY and still prepare the [six-question brief](/work#prepare-your-six-question-brief). It needs no purchase, and it gives your own build a written starting point.

## Questions about Compare a DIY Obsidian and Claude Code setup with a scoped build and choose your route

### What are the benefits of Claude Code and Obsidian for persistent context?

The combination gives an agent direct access to inspectable files that can persist across sessions and model changes. The business still needs source order, permissions, corrections, tests, backups, and handoff material around those files.

### Is the Claude Code and Obsidian persistent brain setup hype or useful?

It is useful when it supports a defined recurring job and the agent reads the right files without flooding context. It becomes overhead when the vault lacks an index, source authority, a correction path, and tests that prove the workflow works.

### When should I build this myself instead of paying for a reviewed setup?

Choose DIY when you can own the setup, testing, maintenance, backups, permissions, and recovery work. A reviewed build fits when you want those boundaries, acceptance tests, receipts, and handoff materials designed and independently checked with you.
