# Split internal linking between developers and content teams so links scale and stay relevant.

The developers ship a related-articles widget. The writers ignore it and paste their own links into the body. Other writers add no links at all, and blame the lack of tooling. Nobody owns internal linking, so the site has both duplicated effort and orphan pages.

Internal linking needs technical infrastructure and editorial judgment. Pure automation gives up contextual relevance for scale. Pure manual linking cannot stay consistent across thousands of pages. The working model separates systematic infrastructure, which developers own, from contextual links, which the content team owns. Clear boundaries prevent both the gaps and the duplication.

## Know what internal links do

Internal links do five jobs:

- **Distribute link equity.** Links pass ranking value (PageRank) from strong pages to target pages. The homepage and high-traffic articles should link to important conversion pages and to new content that needs visibility.
- **Build crawl paths.** Search engines find pages by following links. A page with no internal links, an orphan, may never be crawled or indexed.
- **Signal topical coverage.** Links between related pages form topic clusters. An article on email marketing automation that links to drip campaigns, segmentation, and deliverability shows coherent coverage.
- **Guide readers.** Links lead readers to related content and deepen the visit.
- **Describe the target.** Anchor text tells search engines what the linked page covers. "Learn more about technical SEO audits" says more than "click here."

For the architecture view of these jobs, read [internal linking architecture for developers](/articles/internal-linking-architecture-developers).

## Split the work at one line

| Owner | Jobs |
|---|---|
| Developers | Navigation menus, breadcrumbs and their markup, related content systems, pagination and series navigation, link audit tools |
| Content team | Contextual links in the body, cluster hub links from pillar pages, link refresh campaigns, conversion links |
| Shared | Related-content widget rules, URL structure and slugs, anchor text quality |

## Developers: build navigation and breadcrumbs

Generate the header and footer navigation from the site hierarchy, so that every major section is reachable from every page. Developers own the structure, mobile behavior, accessibility, and consistent rendering across templates.

Breadcrumbs state the hierarchy on each page:

```html
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
  <ol>
    <li><a href="/">Home</a></li>
    <li><a href="/resources">Resources</a></li>
    <li><a href="/resources/guides">Guides</a></li>
    <li aria-current="page">Technical SEO</li>
  </ol>
</nav>
```

Add `BreadcrumbList` markup that matches the visible trail:

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://example.com/"},
    {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "Resources", "item": "https://example.com/resources"}
  ]
}
```

Developers own the generation logic, the markup, and the correctness of the hierarchy.

## Developers: build related content and pagination

Automated recommendations can use shared tags or category, content similarity, items viewed together, or relationships the content team curates. A simple query:

```javascript
const getRelatedArticles = (current) =>
  db.articles.find({
    $or: [{tags: {$in: current.tags}}, {category: current.category}],
    _id: {$ne: current._id}
  }).sort({publishDate: -1}).limit(5);
```

Developers own the algorithm, its performance, testing, and the infrastructure to A/B test recommendation strategies.

For series and paginated lists, give each page plain crawlable links to the previous and next pages. Google stopped using `rel="prev"` and `rel="next"` as an indexing signal in 2019. Give each paginated page its own self-referencing canonical URL. Developers also decide between pagination and infinite scroll. If they choose infinite scroll, the page still needs real paginated URLs behind it.

## Developers: build link audit tools

Give the content team tools that show where links are missing or broken. Build orphan detection, broken link reports, and a view of how link equity flows. Add anchor text analysis for over-optimized or unused anchors. A basic orphan detector:

```javascript
const findOrphanPages = async () => {
  const pages = await db.pages.find();
  const linked = new Set();
  for (const page of pages) {
    extractInternalLinks(page.content).forEach(url => linked.add(url));
  }
  return pages.filter(p => !linked.has(p.url) && p.url !== '/');
};
```

Developers own the accuracy of the data, its performance at scale, and its place in the content workflow.

## Content: write contextual links

Contextual links sit in the article body and point to closely related content. Automation cannot choose them well. An example paragraph: "Email marketing automation depends on trigger-based workflows. Before you automate, master email segmentation and deliverability, so that automated campaigns reach the right people." The phrases "email segmentation" and "deliverability" link to those guides.

The content team owns the choice of target, the anchor text, the link density, and the updates when better content appears. Guidelines range from 3 to 5 contextual links per 1,000 words to 2 to 5 per 500 words. More than 10 per 500 words looks spammy. Fewer than 2 per 2,000 words misses opportunities. Relevance matters more than the count.

Follow five rules:

1. Link only where the target adds value for the reader.
2. Write descriptive anchors, never "click here" or "this article."
3. Link to content that directly covers the concept in the sentence.
4. Vary the anchor phrasing; do not repeat one exact-match phrase.
5. Prefer links to pillar content.

The writer-side method is in [internal linking for content writers](/articles/internal-linking-content-writers).

## Content: maintain cluster hubs, refreshes, and conversion links

A pillar page links to every supporting article in its cluster, and each supporting article links back. An example outline for an email marketing pillar:

```text
Complete guide to email marketing
  Strategy and planning
    Email marketing strategy framework      -> /strategy
    Audience segmentation approaches        -> /segmentation
    Campaign calendar planning              -> /calendar
  Technical implementation
    Email automation tools comparison       -> /tools
    Deliverability optimization             -> /deliverability
    Analytics and measurement               -> /analytics
```

The content team decides which articles belong to each cluster, orders the hierarchy, updates the pillar as new articles publish, and keeps the links bidirectional. For the concept behind clusters, read [what is topical authority](/articles/what-is-topical-authority).

Run link refresh campaigns. Audit older articles for missing links. Point old articles to newer, better content. Add links from high-traffic pages to important conversion pages, and link new content from established pages. Rank the updates by traffic and authority, write the insertions so they read naturally, and measure the effect.

Place conversion links. Blog articles link to relevant product pages. Resource pages link to a trial or demo request. Case studies link to related service pages. The content team chooses the placement, tests alternatives, and balances reader experience with business goals.

## Share three jobs

**The related-content widget.** Developers build the widget and its placement in templates. They build flexible queries by tag, category, or manual selection, and layouts such as grid, list, or carousel. The content team configures it: which pages show it, the filter rules, pinned recommendations, and the widget title.

**URL structure and slugs.** Developers enforce the pattern, for example `/resources/{category}/{slug}`, as in `/resources/guides/email-marketing-automation`. The content team chooses the category, writes the slug, and decides whether a slug changes on update, with the redirect that implies. The URL structure itself is a technical decision with SEO and content input. Developers propose the pattern, SEO and content confirm it fits the strategy, and developers implement it. The wider structure is in [site architecture for SEO engineering](/articles/site-architecture-seo-engineering).

**Anchor text.** The content team writes varied, natural, contextual anchors and avoids exact-match overuse. Developers provide the distribution analysis, the reports on anchor patterns, and the written guidelines.

## Pick the tools

WordPress sites can use plugins. The plugin features here are as observed in March 2026. Link Whisper suggests internal links with AI, and Yoast SEO suggests links from focus keywords. Internal Link Juicer inserts links from custom rules. Useful CMS features include suggestions as the writer types, broken link warnings, link counts per article, and relationship views.

A headless CMS such as Contentful, Sanity, or Strapi models relationships as fields:

```javascript
{
  title: "Email Marketing Automation Guide",
  content: "...",
  relatedArticles: [{reference: "article_123"}, {reference: "article_456"}],
  pillarPage: {reference: "pillar_789"}
}
```

Developers build the queries, the components that render the links, and the admin interface. The content team uses the relationship editor and previews the result. For headless rendering concerns, read [headless CMS SEO for developers](/articles/headless-cms-seo-developers).

Track internal link clicks in GA4, so that both teams see which links work:

```javascript
document.querySelectorAll('a[href^="/"]').forEach(link => {
  link.addEventListener('click', () => {
    gtag('event', 'internal_link_click', {
      link_text: link.textContent.trim(),
      link_url: link.href,
      source_page: location.pathname
    });
  });
});
```

Register the three parameters as custom dimensions in GA4 to report on them.

## Resolve four conflicts

**The widget shows irrelevant links.** The algorithm needs work, or the content metadata is thin. The content team collects examples of good and bad recommendations. Developers improve the algorithm or add a manual override. The content team curates recommendations for high-priority pages. The algorithm serves scale; curation serves the important pages.

**Writers link inconsistently.** Some writers add many links, some none, because no standard exists. Set a minimum of 3 to 5 contextual links per article. Train writers on the value of links, and add a link check to the editorial checklist. Have developers build a report of under-linked articles.

**Developers say "use the widget."** The content team wants body links, and developers call the widget sufficient. Both are needed. Automated links give baseline connectivity at scale. Manual links add context the automation misses.

**The content team asks for impossible automation.** The request reads "link to the most relevant content with perfect context awareness." Explain the limits of automated relevance, and show the current algorithm's output with examples. Propose automation for the baseline and manual links for premium pages.

## Measure coverage, quality, and effect

| Type | Owner | Metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Developers | Share of pages with at least 3 internal links; orphan count, target 0; average internal links per page; broken internal links, target 0 |
| Quality | Shared | Widget click-through rate; pages per session; internal search use, where heavy use suggests weak navigation; conversion rate from internally linked pages |
| SEO effect | Marketing and SEO | Rankings of pages that received new links; organic traffic to newly linked pages; crawl efficiency, pages crawled against pages on the site |

## Decide on plugins, link changes, and link targets

**Custom build or plugins.** Build custom automation for proprietary content relationships or an unusual architecture. Build it also for a scale beyond plugins, such as 100,000 pages or more. Use plugins for a standard blog or content site, limited development capacity, or fast rollout. Most sites do best with a plugin baseline plus deliberate manual links.

**Changes to existing links.** New links are safe and help. Before you remove links, check whether they passed significant authority to their targets. An anchor text change is safe while the new text stays descriptive. Do not remove many links at once. Do not rewrite anchors to exact-match keywords. Gradual change is safer than wholesale change.

**Targets for links from strong pages.** Rank the candidates in four groups:

1. New content that needs initial visibility.
2. Important conversion pages: product, pricing, signup.
3. Pillar content that anchors a cluster.
4. Pages in positions 5 to 15 that more authority could lift into the top 3.

Do not link from strong pages to everything. Selective links concentrate authority where it counts.
