# Add a cost of living comparison to your agent relocation page

Build a cost of living comparison by city around matched areas, dates, expense definitions, and household assumptions. Show those assumptions beside the results. Give visitors a separate way to ask about buying or selling in your service area. Put the source records and contact-delivery checks in the website brief.

Start with a sourced comparison table. Add interactive controls only when you have approved data, clear calculations, and someone responsible for updates.

The requirements below are a proposed publishing method. They describe what to commission and inspect, with no forecast of visits or inquiries.

## Choose the question your comparison will answer

Decide whether the page compares regional price levels, modeled household expenses, or costs for a particular housing scenario. Give each view its own heading and explanation.

The [Insure.com comparison page](https://www.insure.com/cost-of-living-by-state.html) presents state indexes and a calculator with location and income inputs. Its breakdown includes housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, health care, and insurance. Its methodology identifies expense weights and the data period. [Insure.com comparison page](https://www.insure.com/cost-of-living-by-state.html), checked 2026.10.14.

For an agent website, prepare a narrower destination comparison with visible sources and housing questions you can answer. Include links to your existing area guides and representation process. Keep the expense module within the relocation journey.

Choose origin areas from your own documented inquiry history when available. Describe that history accurately. Without it, label the proposed origins as editorial selections.

Do not create pages for every possible city pair before preparing distinct evidence and assigning upkeep. Start with a comparison you can check and maintain.

## Use a source that matches the comparison

BEA's Regional Price Parities measure price-level differences across states and metropolitan areas for a given year. They express those levels relative to the national level. Use them for a regional price comparison with the dataset's actual area names. [BEA's Regional Price Parities](https://www.bea.gov/data/prices-inflation/regional-price-parities-state-and-metro-area), checked 2026.10.14.

BLS says the Consumer Price Index measures changes over time within an area. It cannot measure living-cost differences between areas. Do not compare two local CPI index levels to decide which city is cheaper. [BLS CPI FAQ](https://www.bls.gov/cpi/questions-and-answers.htm), checked 2026.10.14.

Use this decision table as a source plan:

| Proposed view | Source approach | Publication requirement |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Regional price levels | Matched BEA Regional Price Parities series | Use the same year, category, and geographic level. Label metro coverage explicitly. |
| Household expense model | A documented model with the same household type for both areas | State its budget definition, tax treatment, housing basis, and exclusions. Confirm reuse permission. |
| Property-specific housing scenario | Approved property documents and current quotes for the selected home | Name the property, assumptions, quote dates, and items awaiting confirmation. Keep this separate from regional indexes. |

MIT's Living Wage Calculator models basic needs for different family types and publishes county, metro, and state estimates. Its housing component uses rental data. Its model excludes savings and certain discretionary spending. Explain those limits if linking it as a household-budget resource. [MIT's methodology](https://livingwage.mit.edu/pages/methodology), checked 2026.10.14.

MIT also asks visitors not to scrape its data and directs licensing inquiries to the Living Wage Institute. Link the resource while reuse remains unresolved. Do not assume public visibility permits importing a dataset into your website. [MIT's data-use notice](https://livingwage.mit.edu/pages/methodology), checked 2026.10.14.

## Match geography, dates, and household assumptions

Keep a source record for every displayed value. Record the publisher, exact URL, series or category, area identifier, data period, unit, and date checked. Name its editor and approval status.

If a source covers a metropolitan area, display the full metro name. Explain which destination city the guide concerns. Do not rename the metro estimate as a city-only figure.

Use the same source release for both sides of an index comparison. Separate the period measured from the date you checked the page. A recent review date must not imply newly collected prices.

For a household model, show the selected household assumptions before presenting a total. Specify adults, working adults, children, housing basis, and whether the figures include income taxes. Keep those settings matched between areas.

Offer an editable scenario instead of guessing a visitor's circumstances. Avoid asking for private financial documents in the comparison controls or introductory inquiry form.

If a selected area has no data, display an unavailable result. Offer a clearly labeled broader geography only when the reader chooses it. Do not silently substitute a nearby area.

## Define expense rows before adding them

Use the table below as a blank content brief. Fill values only after checking sources and permission. It contains no local prices or savings estimates.

| Expense row | Definition to agree | Check before publishing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Housing | Rental estimate, selected rental quote, or defined ownership scenario | Match housing type and included charges. Identify what requires a property-level check. |
| Utilities | Named services and stated usage assumptions | Check whether the housing source already includes any utility costs. |
| Food | Stated household model and food category | Match household size, source period, and treatment of meals outside the home. |
| Transportation | Defined vehicle or transit assumptions | Check whether insurance, financing, and maintenance are already included. |
| Health care and childcare | Named model or confirmed quote with stated assumptions | Preserve coverage and household definitions. Mark unconfirmed items as unavailable. |
| Taxes | Stated tax basis and included taxes | Keep gross-income requirements separate from spending after income taxes. |
| Other recurring expenses | Individually defined categories | Check for overlap with every other row. List excluded categories. |
| Moving and purchase costs | Separately sourced one-time costs | Keep them outside the recurring monthly total. |

MIT's housing definition includes certain utilities within gross rent, while its transportation definition includes vehicle insurance among other expenses. These are reasons to inspect category definitions before adding standalone utility or insurance rows. [MIT's component definitions](https://livingwage.mit.edu/pages/methodology), checked 2026.10.14.

For an ownership scenario, request the purchase-price assumption, down payment, loan terms, and dated lender calculation. Identify property taxes, insurance, association charges, and maintenance assumptions separately. Have the responsible source confirm each amount before publication.

Keep that scenario separate from a rental-based household model. Never present a regional housing index as the monthly payment for a particular home.

## Make each calculation inspectable

For a matched index series, specify the relative difference as:

`Relative difference = (destination index / origin index - 1) × 100%`

Label the result as a difference in the selected index. Name its source, year, category, and geography beside it. Do not turn it into a household savings promise.

For a sourced expense model, display the category values and their units. Specify the monthly equivalent of an annual amount as `annual amount / 12`. Sum only categories with matching units and nonoverlapping definitions.

If you replace a modeled category with a visitor's supplied value, identify the replacement. Remove the original category from the total. Keep the source model and edited scenario distinguishable.

When a required category is unavailable, label the result as an incomplete subtotal. Do not treat missing data as zero. Retain the underlying precision and round only the displayed result.

Do not calculate an equivalent salary unless the selected model supports that calculation and its assumptions are visible. Ask the developer to document every formula and its input fields.

## Connect the comparison to a property question

Place the comparison above the contact request. Let visitors inspect sources and assumptions without submitting an email address.

For buyers, offer a question about housing in the destination you serve. Request the destination, approximate timing, question, and usable reply details. Carry the selected comparison and its source version into the received inquiry.

For sellers, explain where you provide seller representation. Ask for the property's location, intended timing, and selling question. Keep the cost comparison separate from a home valuation or promised sale proceeds.

Allow visitors to correct the comparison context before sending. Name the receiving person or team. Keep optional marketing signup separate from the request for a reply.

W3C recommends labels that identify each form control and describe its purpose. It also recommends clear feedback about submission errors and success. Include both requirements in the developer brief. [W3C's labels guidance](https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/forms/labels/), [submission feedback guidance](https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/forms/notifications/), checked 2026.10.14. [W3C's labels guidance](https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/forms/labels/), checked 2026.10.14.

For the comparison table, request marked header cells and clear relationships between headers and values. W3C explains that assistive technologies use those relationships to provide context. [W3C's table guidance](https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/tables/), checked 2026.10.14.

## Test the module and keep its evidence

Agree on these acceptance checks before commissioning the page. They are proposed tests, with no claim that a website has already passed them.

| Check | Expected result | Evidence to retain |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Source match | Each displayed value matches its approved source record. | Source URL, period, area identifier, and value comparison. |
| Assumptions | The page displays the selected geography, household basis, units, and exclusions. | Phone and desktop captures of each agreed view. |
| Identical areas | Selecting the same area and series produces no relative index difference. | Input pair, formula, and displayed result. |
| Calculation direction | Reversing areas changes the comparison baseline correctly. | Independent calculations for both directions. |
| Category replacement | A supplied expense replaces its modeled category without double counting. | Before-and-after category totals. |
| Missing data | An unsupported area or missing category produces the agreed unavailable or incomplete state. | Input and resulting message. |
| Table and controls | Headers, labels, errors, and results remain understandable in agreed keyboard and phone checks. | Device, route tested, and recorded findings. |
| Buyer and seller delivery | Each labeled test reaches its intended recipient with the question and comparison context intact. | Submitted values and matching received message. |
| Update | The designated editor can replace a source version and repeat affected checks. | Editing instructions and demonstrated update. |

Agree with the recipient before sending sample inquiries. Keep the submission confirmation and received message as separate evidence. Repair failed checks before accepting the page.

Name an owner for the source records and a next review date. Recheck figures when the source releases new data. Remove unsupported results while awaiting confirmation.

Track page use and received questions separately when evaluating the page later. Compare actual questions with the page's intended buying or selling purpose. Leave unknown inquiry origins unknown.

## Bring the comparison brief into the website fix

Scale With Search's $2,000 whole website fix repairs or rebuilds an agent or small-team website. It includes an inquiry-path test and proof of receipt. Review the [real estate website scope](/for/real-estate). [scalewithsearch.com primary source](https://scalewithsearch.com/for/real-estate), checked 2026.10.14.

Supply your current website, destination coverage, approved sources, reuse permissions, comparison definitions, and intended inquiry recipient. Include the acceptance table and the person responsible for updates.

Confirm the comparison module's place in the written website scope before work starts. Require the source record, calculation instructions, editing access, and inquiry receipts at handoff.
