# Decide whether to update, rewrite, consolidate, or delete each old post.

A team publishes 4 articles a week for two years. It now owns 416 articles. Many of them decay: statistics age, links break, competitors publish better pages, and search intent moves. One article brought 500 visits a month last year and brings 150 now, a 70 percent decline. It gets no attention while the team writes article 417.

Content libraries grow faster than teams maintain them. Each old post gets one of five actions. You update it, rewrite it in place, or replace it at the same URL. Or you consolidate it with a competing post, or delete it. This guide gives you the trigger for each action and walks an example library through the decision. The refresh process itself, step by step, is in [content refresh strategy](/articles/content-refresh-strategy).

## Work an example triage

The table shows six example posts from a hypothetical library. All numbers are example inputs.

| Post | Peak visits a month | Visits now | Position trend | Other signal | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: email subject line tips | 900 | 700, down 22 percent | 4 to 7 | 2021 statistics, 3 broken links | Update |
| B: marketing automation guide | 1,200 | 500, down 58 percent | Page 1 to page 2 | Competitors added tool comparisons and video | Rewrite in place |
| C: social media scheduling apps | 600 | 90, down 85 percent | Out of the top 30 | Intent moved from a list to a comparison; demand remains | Replace at the same URL |
| D and E: lead magnet ideas, lead magnet examples | 400 each | 250 each | The two URLs alternate for one query | Cannibalization | Consolidate into D or E |
| F: conference recap from 2022 | 30 | 0 for 14 months | Not ranking | No backlinks, no business fit, no relevant replacement | Delete with a 410 |

Post A matches the update trigger: a moderate decline, still in the top 15, with clear age markers. Post B lost more than 40 percent and fell to page 2 because competitors raised the standard. Post C lost more than 80 percent and its intent changed, but the keyword still has demand. For D and E, pick the survivor by backlinks and traffic history before you merge. Post F meets every deletion condition and has no relevant replacement, so its deleted URL returns 410.

## Pick one of five actions

| Action | Typical effort | Trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Update | 1 to 3 hours | Sound content with age markers; 10 to 30 percent decline from peak; still in positions 1 to 15 but slipping |
| Rewrite in place | 4 to 8 hours | 40 to 70 percent decline; dropped from page 1 to page 2 or lower; competitors or intent changed |
| Replace at the same URL | 8 to 16 hours | 80 percent or more lost; intent fully shifted; the old article cannot be saved, but the keyword still has demand |
| Consolidate | 6 to 12 hours | Several posts target the same or similar keywords, or thin posts split a topic that one guide would cover better |
| Delete | 30 to 60 minutes | Zero traffic for 12 months or more while indexed; no keyword demand; no fit with the business; thin or duplicate content |

The effort figures are planning estimates, not measured averages. Measure each post before you choose. For the traffic and position checks, use the method in [content decay identification](/articles/content-decay-identification).

### Follow the action decision tree

1. Does the post still serve a business need or a reader task? If no, check its links, referrals, and historical value before deletion. Redirect only to a relevant replacement; otherwise return 410.
2. Does another post serve the same task better? If yes, compare unique substance and query intent before consolidation. Shared keywords alone are insufficient.
3. Does the topic still have demand and the URL still fit? If no, reconsider the target before spending on a rewrite.
4. Are the structure and useful sections sound? If yes, update the dated facts and examples.
5. Can you preserve useful sections while closing the intent gap? If yes, rewrite in place. If no, replace the article at the same URL only when that URL still matches the new task.

The percentage declines in the action table are planning signals. They do not choose the action by themselves. Post A’s outdated facts support an update; Post B’s missing task coverage supports a rewrite. Save that qualitative evidence beside the traffic numbers.

## Update a sound post that shows its age

An update keeps the structure and depth, because they still compete. It adds freshness. Update the statistics and replace old examples with current ones. Fix broken outbound links, and replace screenshots of old interfaces. Add 200 to 400 words on new developments, and rewrite the meta description for click-through rate.

This action usually has the highest ratio of impact to effort. Plan to measure the result over 60 to 90 days. Look for recovered traffic, recovered search features, and positions that stop slipping.

## Rewrite a post in place when the field moved

A rewrite in place keeps the URL and the strongest sections and rebuilds the rest. Start from the current top results. List the gaps, and expand thin sections into full coverage. Reorganize the structure to match the current intent, and add media and structured data where the page qualifies. Rewrite the introduction and conclusion. Expect to change 60 to 80 percent of the text.

The effort is substantial, but the URL keeps its history and backlinks. Plan to measure over 90 to 120 days. A rewrite can exceed the post's old peak, because it now answers the current intent.

## Replace the article at the same URL when nothing is salvageable

A replacement archives the old text and researches the topic from scratch. Write a new article for the current intent at the same URL, and optimize it fully. Update every internal link that points to it. The result is new content with an old URL's history.

The ratio of impact to effort is lower. Plan to measure over 4 to 6 months.

## Consolidate posts that compete for one keyword

Two or more posts on the same keyword split the ranking signals. Consolidate in this order:

1. Identify every overlapping post.
2. Pick the strongest URL by backlink profile and traffic history.
3. Merge the useful content of the weaker posts into it.
4. Add a 301 redirect from each weaker post to the strongest URL.
5. Update internal links to point at the surviving URL.

Consolidation removes the cannibalization, concentrates authority, and gives one complete article a better chance than several fragments. The ratio of impact to effort is high.

## Delete a post that serves nobody

Deletion is quick, but check first. Confirm the post has no value: no traffic, no links worth keeping, no business role. If a relevant replacement serves the same reader task, redirect to it with a 301. Otherwise, return 410. Remove the deleted URL from the XML sitemap, as covered in [XML sitemap best practices](/articles/xml-sitemap-best-practices-developers). Update the internal links that pointed to it.

The direct traffic effect is near zero. The gain is site quality and a crawl budget spent on pages that matter.

## Walk one post from diagnosis to recheck

Take post B and make the action handoff explicit. Save its query export and old text, list the missing comparison and setup sections, and name the sections that still earn clicks. Assign an editor and reviewer. Run the seven-step in-place refresh, then measure it against an unchanged control there.

Bring the result back to the library record. The decision remains "rewrite in place" until new evidence supports another action. Record the reason, expected effort, owner, release date, and next check for each post. That makes a later consolidation or deletion a reviewed decision rather than a reaction to one bad month.

## Date the change honestly

Add an "Updated: [date]" line and keep the original publish date. The pair shows the post's history and its freshness. A replaced publish date erases that history. The exception is a replacement with a different angle; a new publish date is acceptable there.

Set a refresh date by topic volatility, and do not wait for traffic to collapse. Software and marketing tactics need a check every 6 to 12 months. Business strategy and education need one every 12 to 18 months. Foundational and historical topics need one every 18 to 24 months, or as needed.

## Handle a refresh that fails

A refresh that does not recover points to a deeper issue. Search intent may have moved, the keyword opportunity may have shrunk, or a technical problem may block the page. Check four things in order:

1. Confirm the page is indexed.
2. Check for technical errors on the page.
3. Reassess the keyword target against current demand and intent.
4. If the refresh truly failed, move the post to consolidation, deletion, or a new keyword.

## Scale the program with limited resources

Work the highest-impact posts only, and batch similar actions together, for example all updates in one week. Write a checklist for each action type. Hand tactical updates to freelancers once the decision is made. Accept that some posts will not get maintenance. To set the share of capacity that goes to refreshes, read [content velocity vs quality](/articles/content-velocity-vs-quality).

AI tools help with defined tasks. They can find outdated statistics, draft sections that close a known gap, and rewrite dated examples. They do not choose the action, judge the competitive field, or keep the brand voice consistent. Use them to execute a plan a person made. Team rules for that use are in [AI content for SEO content teams](/articles/ai-content-seo-content-teams).
