# Refresh old content to recover lost rankings.

A content team publishes 10 articles a month. Meanwhile, 50 older articles slide down the rankings, one position at a time. The team never looks back, because the plan counts new articles only.

A content refresh strategy finds pages that lost ranking performance and updates them to win the positions back. An existing page already has topical authority, backlinks, and crawl history. A new page has none of those. So a refresh often costs less than a new article and moves traffic faster. As an example, if a refresh takes 30 percent of the effort of a new article and matches its traffic gain, the refresh goes first.

## Know why pages lose rankings

**Freshness decay.** Information goes out of date. Statistics age, tool recommendations change as products change, and best practices move with algorithm updates. A page that was complete at publication becomes incomplete next to newer competitors. Google does not apply one freshness boost to every query. Freshness matters where information changes. Search "best project management tools" and the top results are recent, because the tools change. Search "how photosynthesis works" and older pages rank well, because the topic does not change. Sort your pages by how sensitive their topic is to time.

**Competitors that surpass you.** Competitors publish for the same keywords. Their pages cover subtopics yours lacks, load faster, have more internal links, or carry more backlink authority. Your page did not get worse; the field improved around it. This is a common cause of slow decline: a page at position 3 drifts to position 7 over 12 months.

**Core updates.** Google's core updates change how it assesses quality. A page that satisfied the old criteria may fail the new ones. The March 2024 core update, for example, targeted unoriginal content: pages that aggregate information without added expertise. After a core update drop, assess whether the page meets the new bar or needs more than a surface update.

**Technical decay.** Internal links break, images stop loading, embedded third-party content stops working, and outbound links redirect. These problems accumulate and hurt both readers and crawling.

The full diagnosis method, with a scoring model, is in [content decay identification](/articles/content-decay-identification).

## Start with a triaged refresh candidate

Use the [library triage guide](/articles/content-refresh-strategy-guide) to choose update, rewrite, replace, consolidate, or delete before you begin this walkthrough. Bring one approved URL, its target queries, the suspected problem, and the sections that still earn clicks. Content decay identification supplies the diagnostic scoring method.

Save the before version and finalized traffic baseline. Confirm that the decline is not only seasonal demand or a tracking change. This page owns the in-place edit and its controlled measurement. Library-wide selection and consolidation belong in the triage record.

## Refresh a page in seven steps

1. **Analyze what wins.** Before you touch the page, study positions 1 to 5 for the target keyword. Note the subtopics they cover and you do not, and their format (tables, visual guides, interactive elements). Note how recent their information is, their length against yours, and their internal and external links. The gap is your refresh specification.
2. **Preserve what works.** In Search Console, list the queries that bring traffic to the page. Do not remove sections that perform for those queries. Keep the URL. Keep the heading structure for queries where the page ranks. A refresh adds to the page; it does not subtract.
3. **Update the facts.** Replace old statistics, tool references, and recommendations. Add context for anything that changed since publication. Put the year in each statistical reference, in the form "X percent of Y (Source, Year)," so that readers and search engines can judge freshness.
4. **Expand the coverage.** Add sections for subtopics that competitors cover and you lack. If the top 3 results all discuss how to measure refresh impact and your page does not, add that section. Add material that did not exist at publication: new tools, techniques, and developments.
5. **Fix the technical elements.** Rewrite the title tag if click-through data shows weakness, and refresh the meta description. Fix broken links and images. Add [structured data](/articles/structured-data-implementation) if the page qualifies for rich results. Confirm that the page passes the [Core Web Vitals](/articles/core-web-vitals-engineering) thresholds.
6. **Strengthen internal links.** Link from the refreshed page to newer articles published since. Link from recent articles back to the refreshed page. Links in both directions recirculate authority and show crawlers the page is maintained.
7. **Update the modified date.** Update `dateModified` or its equivalent in your CMS. Google reads dates from visible text and from structured data. Change the date only after substantive changes, never for trivial edits.

## Size the refresh: light, medium, or heavy

| Refresh | Time | Use it when | Preserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 1 to 2 hours | The page ranks well but shows early aging | Heading structure, body flow, primary keyword, URL slug |
| Medium | 4 to 8 hours | Competitors now cover subtopics you lack | Overall structure and URL |
| Heavy | 8 to 16 hours | The page has strong backlinks, but its content no longer matches intent or quality standards | URL, primary keyword, and every section that still ranks for a specific query |

A **light refresh** updates statistics, fixes broken external links, and improves the title tag and meta description for click-through rate. It adds 1 or 2 internal links to newer content and corrects small facts. Expect a better click-through rate from the new title and meta description, and positions that stop slipping.

A **medium refresh** does all of that, plus 2 or 3 new sections on subtopics competitors now cover. It also brings current examples, better formatting (tables, comparison sections, visuals), and 5 or more new internal links in both directions. The medium refresh often returns the most per hour. It uses existing authority and raises quality substantially.

A **heavy refresh** rewrites the article at the same URL. The old text is a foundation. The result has new sections, rewritten passages, a new heading hierarchy, and full subtopic coverage. A rewrite in place keeps the link equity that a new URL would give up. Check Search Console query data before you remove anything. Results vary more, and the page can dip for 2 to 4 weeks while Google reassesses the changed content.

Refresh at the same URL unless the page has a fundamental problem that an edit cannot fix. Such problems are the wrong angle, the wrong intent, or quality beyond repair. A new URL starts from zero. Even a refresh that changes 80 percent of the text keeps more equity than a new page. If the old slug becomes truly misleading, redirect it with a 301. Keep such redirects rare.

## Keep consolidation separate from the refresh

If triage found several pages serving the same task, use the action-selection guide before editing. [Keyword cannibalization detection](/articles/keyword-cannibalization-detection) helps establish whether the URLs compete or serve distinct intents. Two URLs appearing for one query do not establish a merge by themselves.

A consolidation changes URLs, content, and link destinations together. Record it as a separate intervention. Mixing that change into an in-place refresh makes the result harder to interpret.

## Schedule the edit and the checks

For an illustrative team allocation, reserve 20 to 30 percent of editorial capacity for approved refreshes. A 12-piece month could contain 3 refreshes and 9 new articles, a 25-percent refresh share. Replace that split with your backlog and measured editing effort.

Batch similar factual or interface corrections when reviewers can verify them together. Keep the seven-step checklist for each URL. Schedule the before/after exports and control-group checks when you assign the edit, so measurement does not depend on somebody remembering later.

Review software comparisons and current statistics more often than stable explanations. The source's volatility and your observed declines set the cadence. Send pages requiring a different action back to library triage.

## Measure the result

Record the page's organic traffic, target keyword rankings, and click-through rate for the 30 days before the refresh. Compare the same numbers 30, 60, and 90 days after. Allow 1 to 3 weeks before rankings move, because Google must recrawl and reassess the page.

Algorithm updates, seasonal patterns, and competitor moves affect rankings at the same time as your refresh. Control for them with a control group of similar pages that you did not refresh. If the refreshed pages beat a suitable control group, the result supports a refresh effect. It does not prove causation when the groups faced different demand, ranking changes, or tracking conditions.

### Work one refresh against a control

This is an illustrative calculation. It is not a measured client result. You refresh an automation guide at the same URL, add a current setup walkthrough, and correct three outdated screenshots. You leave a comparable guide unchanged. Neither page gets a campaign or migration during the test.

| Measure | Refreshed guide | Unchanged control | Interpretation |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| Prior 30-day finalized organic sessions | 3,000 | 2,000 | Saved before the edit |
| Matched 30-day period after an observed recrawl | 4,500 | 2,200 | Same device and channel definitions |
| Change | +50% | +10% | Raw changes differ by 40 percentage points |
| Control-adjusted expectation | 3,300 | Not applicable | 3,000 × 1.10 |
| Sessions above that expectation | 1,200 | Not applicable | 4,500 minus 3,300 |

Save query impressions, positions, CTR, and conversion outcomes with those sessions. If both pages gain impressions while only the refreshed guide gains CTR, the title change is one explanation to test. If the guide’s topic has a demand surge absent from the control, the 1,200 difference cannot all be assigned to the edit.

Keep the actual release and recrawl dates, source corrections, and control selection in the record. Use the same test at later checkpoints. Do not compare a 28-day baseline with a 31-day result or mix Google clicks with all organic sessions. Report both the raw lift and the control-adjusted calculation, with their limits.

Calculate the recovery rate: the share of lost traffic that the refresh won back. An example: a page fell from 5,000 to 3,000 monthly visits and recovered to 4,500. It recovered 1,500 of the 2,000 lost visits, a 75 percent recovery rate. Track the rate across all refreshes to learn your average and improve the process.

Use Google Search Console as the primary tool. Filter the Performance report by page, compare the two 6-month ranges, and sort by click decline. Ahrefs Content Explorer estimates historical traffic for pages without Search Console data. Screaming Frog finds technical decay such as broken links, missing images, and slow pages. Clearscope or Surfer can score an old page against the current top results to size the content gap.

## Make the case to your team

Show the numbers from your own site. Take your last 20 new articles, and calculate their average time to rank and average monthly traffic at maturity. Take your last 10 refreshes, and calculate their average traffic lift and time to peak. In many teams the refresh wins on speed and cost. Then state one concrete pair in this form: "The refresh of our [topic] guide took [hours] and moved monthly traffic from [before] to [after]. Our last new article took [hours] and brings [visits] a month after 6 months."
