# Run an SEO audit that fixes ranking barriers first and trivia last.

The audit tool reports 500 issues. Missing alt text sits in the same list as a robots.txt rule that blocks half the site. The team starts at the top, spends two weeks on meta descriptions, and the indexing block is still live at the end of the month.

Audits overwhelm because they are complete. Hundreds of possible issues across infrastructure, content, links, usability, and mobile create paralysis. Most tools list every issue without separating catastrophic problems from small ones. A checklist sorted by impact turns the report into a roadmap.

This checklist uses four levels. **Critical** issues block ranking now. **High** issues carry a large opportunity cost. **Medium** issues bring incremental gains. **Low** issues are polish. Fix critical issues first, then work down as resources allow.

## Fix critical issues first

These issues stop Google from crawling, indexing, or ranking the site. Fix them at once. Nothing else matters until they are resolved.

### Indexing blocks

**robots.txt.** Open `domain.com/robots.txt` and look for unintended rules. Common errors are `Disallow: /`, which blocks the whole site, and rules that block the CSS and JavaScript Google needs to render pages. Confirm the file does not block Googlebot or Googlebot-Image.

**noindex tags.** Crawl the site with Screaming Frog and filter for pages with a `noindex` directive. Product pages, category pages, and blog posts should never carry it. A staging `noindex` pushed to production is a common cause.

**Canonical errors.** Look for canonicals that point to URLs that do not exist. Look for chains, in which page A points to B and B points to C. Also look for HTTPS pages that point to HTTP versions, or the reverse.

**Search Console indexing errors.** Open the Page indexing report in Google Search Console. Review the reasons pages are not indexed. Give priority to "Discovered - currently not indexed" and "Crawled - currently not indexed" on important pages.

### Critical technical errors

**5xx server errors.** Pages that return 500, 502, 503, or 504 are unreachable for users and Google. Find them in server logs and in a Screaming Frog crawl. They usually point to capacity limits, configuration errors, or application faults.

**Site-wide mobile failures.** Google indexes the mobile version of pages first. Test the main templates on real phones and with Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools. Look for a missing viewport setting, content wider than the screen, and tap targets that sit too close together. Google retired the Mobile-Friendly Test and the Search Console mobile usability report in December 2023.

**Severe Core Web Vitals failures.** Check the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console or PageSpeed Insights. Flag pages rated "Poor" at the 75th percentile. The thresholds are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) over 4.0 seconds and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) over 500 milliseconds. A Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) over 0.25 also rates "Poor." INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Site-wide performance failures hold back rankings whatever the content quality. [Core Web Vitals debugging](/articles/core-web-vitals-debugging) shows how to find the cause.

### Security and access

**HTTPS.** Serve the whole site over HTTPS with no mixed content warnings. Redirect every HTTP URL to its HTTPS version with a 301. Keep a valid certificate with no expiry warnings.

**Hacks and penalties.** Check the Security issues and Manual actions reports in Search Console. A hacked site shows spam injections, malicious redirects, or security warnings in search results. A manual action needs a fix and a reconsideration request.

### Critical content problems

**Thin or duplicate key pages.** Look for homepage, category, and product pages with fewer than 200 words of unique content. Also look for manufacturer descriptions copied across e-commerce sites, and template pages with no unique value.

**Missing key pages.** Find 404 errors on URLs that have backlinks or traffic. Find deleted product pages and blog posts that carried link equity, and removed pages without redirects.

## Address high-priority issues next

These issues do not block indexing, but they cut ranking potential or usability.

### Technical

- **Wasted crawl effort.** Parameters that create endless URL loops, faceted navigation that produces thousands of low-value URLs, and pagination that splits signals. Check the Screaming Frog crawl depth report; most content should sit 3 clicks or fewer from the homepage.
- **Redirect chains and loops.** A 301 to a 301 to a final page should become one direct 301. The Screaming Frog response codes report finds chains and loops. Each hop slows the page and weakens the signal. [Redirect chains and 301s for developers](/articles/redirect-chains-301-developers) explains the fix.
- **Broken internal links.** Links from strong pages to 404s waste link equity. Use the Screaming Frog inlinks report, and fix links from the homepage, main navigation, and high-traffic pages first.
- **XML sitemap faults.** Sitemaps that list 404s, `noindex` pages, or blocked pages; missing sitemaps for the blog, products, or categories; sitemaps not submitted in Search Console.
- **Moderate speed problems.** Pages that load in 3 to 6 seconds, uncompressed images, unminified CSS and JavaScript, no browser caching, and no CDN.

### Content quality

- **Thin secondary pages.** Blog posts and supporting pages of 300 to 500 words where competitors average 1,500 or more, with no examples, steps, or original insight.
- **Missing titles and descriptions.** A page without a title tag shows a poor generated title in results. Without a meta description, Google builds a snippet from page text, often badly. Screaming Frog lists both.
- **Keyword cannibalization.** Several pages target the same keyword and compete. In the Search Console Performance report, look for queries where several URLs rank. Merge or differentiate those pages. [Keyword cannibalization detection](/articles/keyword-cannibalization-detection) covers the method.
- **Content decay.** Pages that cite old dates, dead products, or retired information. Formerly strong pages with falling traffic in Search Console history. Old statistics, broken outbound links, and stale examples.

### On-page

- **Heading structure.** A missing H1 or several H1s on one page, headings used for styling instead of hierarchy, and relevant keywords absent from headings.
- **Internal links.** Orphan pages with no inbound links, and important pages with few links. Reliance on navigation links instead of contextual links in the body, which pass more value.
- **Images.** Missing alt text, which is an accessibility and SEO issue. Files of hundreds of kilobytes that could be under 50 KB. Names such as `IMG_1234.jpg` instead of descriptive names.

### Off-page

- **Harmful links.** Spam links from hacked sites, link farms, or risky domains. Find suspicious sources in Ahrefs or Semrush. Submit a disavow file only for severe spam, which is rarely necessary.
- **Slowing link growth.** Fewer new links per month than your baseline, while competitors gain links faster and widen the authority gap.
- **Lost valuable links.** Links that now hit a 404 because the target page moved or disappeared. Check the Ahrefs lost backlinks report and restore or redirect the target.

## Work through medium-priority improvements

Handle these after the critical and high-priority work. They matter but are not urgent.

### Technical

- **URL structure.** Replace opaque URLs such as `domain.com/p=123` with descriptive ones, shorten long parameter-heavy URLs, and make patterns consistent across sections.
- **Breadcrumbs.** Add breadcrumb navigation for users and internal links, with `BreadcrumbList` markup.
- **Pagination.** Keep paginated pages indexable, with self-referencing canonicals and plain crawlable links between them. Google stated in 2019 that it no longer uses `rel="next"` and `rel="prev"` for indexing. Consider a view-all page for small sets.
- **hreflang.** Add hreflang to multilingual or multi-regional content so the wrong language does not rank in a region. Validate it with a testing tool.

### Content

- **Metadata.** Rewrite title tags for click-through, with the keyword in the first 50 characters. Write meta descriptions that give a reason to click. Keep every title and description unique.
- **Featured snippets.** Find keywords where a competitor holds the snippet and your page could win it. Give clear answers and use numbered lists and tables. Use question headings that match "People Also Ask" queries.
- **Depth.** Expand thin pages that already rank to match or beat competitor depth, with more sections, examples, visuals, and steps. Start with pages in positions 5 to 15.
- **Media.** Add images, video, and infographics to text-heavy pages, and embed video where the query suits it.

### Structured data

Add `Article` markup to blog posts and `Organization` markup to the homepage. Add `Product` markup with price and availability to e-commerce pages, and `BreadcrumbList` for navigation. Know the current limits. Google retired HowTo rich results and limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023. Google also does not show review stars for a business's reviews of itself, so testimonials on your own site do not earn them.

### Mobile

Size buttons, links, and form fields as tap targets of at least 48 by 48 pixels, with space between them. Restore content that the mobile version leaves out, and fix slow mobile pages. Remove interstitials and pop-ups that block content.

## Leave low-priority polish for routine maintenance

These items have little ranking effect but mark professional work.

- **Writing quality.** Spelling and grammar errors, very complex sentences, and long walls of text.
- **Consistency.** Mixed terms, tone, formatting, and style guides, such as uneven use of the Oxford comma.
- **Anchor text.** Generic anchors such as "click here" and "read more," and too many exact-match keyword anchors.
- **Favicon.** One favicon across the site for tabs and bookmarks.
- **Social metadata.** Open Graph tags for Facebook and LinkedIn, and card markup for X.
- **Robots refinements.** `noindex` on login, cart, and checkout pages and on thin filtered views.
- **Search Console setup.** Verify a Domain property, which covers every protocol and subdomain.
- **Analytics.** Configure Google Analytics 4 with conversion and engagement events, and cross-domain measurement where needed.
- **Structured data validation.** Test markup in the Rich Results Test and fix warnings in the Search Console enhancement reports.

## Run the audit in four phases

### Phase 1: discovery, week 1

Run a full Screaming Frog crawl and export status codes, response times, metadata, and internal links. In Search Console, review page indexing, Core Web Vitals, manual actions, and security issues. Test key templates in PageSpeed Insights, and read Core Web Vitals field data and mobile load times.

### Phase 2: analysis, week 2

Tag each finding critical, high, medium, or low. Estimate impact, from ranking barrier to small gain, and effort, from quick fix to major development. Build a backlog with critical issues at the top. Sort high-priority issues by impact against effort. Group medium and low issues for batch work.

### Phase 3: remediation, ongoing

1. **Sprint 1, immediately.** Fix every critical issue that blocks indexing or causes major failures. Deploy emergency fixes if the site is compromised.
2. **Sprints 2 and 3, first month.** Fix the high-priority technical issues and the main content problems. File reconsideration requests for any manual action.
3. **Sprint 4 onward.** Work through the medium items. Batch similar tasks, such as all metadata updates or all markup work. Track effects in Search Console.

### Phase 4: monitoring

Record baselines before you change anything: organic traffic, positions for priority keywords, Core Web Vitals, and indexing coverage. Watch Search Console weekly, check rankings monthly, and re-audit quarterly. Stagger fixes where you can, so you can see which change moved which metric. Watch for 3 to 6 months after implementation.

[The SEO responsibility matrix](/articles/seo-responsibility-matrix) gives a fuller assignment.

## Avoid four audit mistakes

**Treating every issue the same.** Tools flag 500 issues without ranking them. Teams fix alt text while indexing blocks persist. Triage by impact before you start.

**Auditing once.** Sites build technical debt all the time. Run a light audit of 2 to 3 days each quarter and a full audit of 1 to 2 weeks each year. Audit at once after a sudden traffic drop, an algorithm update, or a major release.

**Freezing in front of the list.** A long report can stop a team. Fix critical issues within days, high-priority issues over weeks, and medium issues over the following months. Skip low-priority items unless they are trivial. Zero issues is not the goal.

**Ignoring capacity.** A list of 300 issues means nothing without people to fix them. Twenty critical fixes are worth more than 300 documented ideas. Take a site of 1,000 to 10,000 pages. Plan 1 to 2 weeks for the first audit and 3 to 6 months to implement the findings.

Combine outside and inside views. An external auditor sees problems your team no longer notices, while your team knows the business context and technical limits. A common rhythm is an external audit every 12 to 18 months and internal reviews every quarter.
