# Audit competitor content to find the gaps your next articles should fill.

A winery publishes three wine-pairing articles. Competitors rank for every pairing query, and the winery's pages go nowhere. A quick look at the top results explains why. Each ranking site has 20 or more pairing articles, organized by varietal, dish, and occasion. Three scattered posts cannot compete with a full topic cluster.

Competitor content analysis shows what already ranks in your niche before you write. You study keyword targeting, topic coverage, depth, and update frequency, and you build a strategy on market evidence instead of guesses. Many content teams work blind, publishing from internal assumptions and trending topics. A competitor audit turns guesswork into pattern recognition: what Google rewards in your vertical, why certain pages dominate, and where the gaps are.

## Know what the audit tells you

### Topic cluster scope

Sites that dominate a topic built full coverage over months or years. Their libraries show how they split subtopics, which supporting articles link together, and how depth and breadth combine. The audit tells you the scope you need, for example: "We need at least 15 to 20 articles to build authority in this cluster." [Topical authority content strategy](/articles/topical-authority-content-strategy) explains how clusters earn rankings.

### Page-level keyword decisions

Competitors show which keywords deserve their own page and which fit as a section of a broader guide. A keyword in the title and H1 of a dedicated page is a primary target. A keyword that appears as an H2 inside a broader article is a secondary target. That distinction decides your information architecture.

### Depth and format norms

Google ranks pages that satisfy the search intent. The audit shows whether your vertical expects 800-word overviews or 3,000-word guides. It also shows the expected format: listicles, step-by-step tutorials, comparison tables, or analysis. A format mismatch loses rankings even when the writing is good.

### Freshness requirements

Some verticals need constant updates, such as algorithm tracking, legal changes, and software reviews. Others tolerate older content, such as historical explainers and foundational concepts. Titles that say "updated" with a year signal a high-freshness vertical. Their absence signals a stable topic where evergreen pages hold rankings without revision.

## Run the audit in five steps

### Step 1: identify your true competitors

Not every competitor matters equally. Analyze sites that meet three tests:

- They rank in the top 10 across several of your target keywords.
- They have a similar model, such as publishers competing for attention, not product pages ranking on brand or commercial intent.
- Their traffic comes from search, not from paid ads or direct visits.

In Semrush or Ahrefs, export the top 10 results for 20 to 30 core keywords and count how often each domain appears. Domains that recur are your true competitors. Focus on 3 to 5 of them, preferably with similar authority and business models. More dilutes the insight, and fewer misses patterns.

### Step 2: inventory their content

Build a spreadsheet of each competitor's top 50 to 100 articles, highest traffic first. Track eight columns:

| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| URL | The article address |
| Primary keyword | Inferred from the title and H1 |
| Word count | Depth |
| Publish date | Age |
| Last updated | Maintenance |
| Estimated organic traffic | Value, from Ahrefs or Semrush |
| Backlinks | External validation |
| Format | Listicle, guide, tutorial, analysis, or comparison |

This dataset is the base for every later step.

### Step 3: map their topic clusters

Group the inventory by theme to see how each competitor built authority. An example for an email marketing competitor:

- 18 articles on segmentation, with a hub guide;
- 12 articles on automation workflows;
- 8 articles on deliverability;
- 15 articles on design practices.

Each cluster has a pillar guide supported by narrower articles, and internal links tie them back to the hub. Crawl the competitor's site with Screaming Frog and export its internal links to see the structure.

### Step 4: run a keyword gap analysis

In Semrush Keyword Gap, or the equivalent Ahrefs report:

1. Enter your domain and 2 or 3 top competitor domains.
2. Filter for keywords where competitors rank in positions 1 to 20 and you do not.
3. Sort by search volume and traffic potential.
4. Export the list for prioritization.

These are topics where competitors rank and you have no coverage, the easiest openings. [Keyword gap analysis](/articles/keyword-gap-analysis) covers the method in more depth.

### Step 5: score content quality

Score each competitor article from 1 to 10 on five dimensions:

- **Depth:** word count, number of H2 and H3 sections, specific examples, cited data.
- **Usefulness:** step-by-step instructions instead of vague principles, tool recommendations, templates.
- **Media:** screenshots, video, infographics, downloads.
- **Freshness:** publish date, update frequency, current references.
- **E-E-A-T signals:** author credentials, cited sources, expert quotes, original research.

Patterns among the high scorers show what your vertical rewards.

## Extract the strategic patterns

### Dominant formats

Read the top results for each target keyword and note the winning format:

- **Listicles dominate:** "15 best tools" beats a full guide; readers want curated options.
- **Tutorials dominate:** instructions beat concepts; readers want "how to do X," not "understanding X."
- **Comparison tables dominate:** decision content wins; readers are choosing, not learning basics.

### Depth benchmarks

Average the word counts of the top 10 results for each keyword. For example:

| Keyword | Top-10 average |
|---|---|
| "email marketing best practices" | 2,800 words |
| "email subject line tips" | 1,400 words |
| "email automation workflows" | 3,500 words |

Articles far below the benchmark underperform. Articles far above it gain little.

### Internal linking density

From the Screaming Frog crawl, measure average internal links per article, the most-linked pages (the hubs), and anchor text patterns. Competitors with strong topical authority link densely, often 5 to 10 related articles from each page.

### Update cadence

In high-change verticals such as software, news, and algorithms, competitors update articles every 3 to 6 months and show the date prominently. In stable verticals, original dates stay for years. Match your refresh plan to the norm. Over-updating a stable topic wastes effort, and under-updating a fast one costs rankings.

### Gaps

Answer four questions:

- Which subtopics do competitors cover in depth that you ignore?
- Where do competitors have 10 or more articles in a cluster while you have 2 or 3?
- Which long-tail keywords rank for competitors but have no dedicated page on your site?
- Which formats, such as videos, tools, and calculators, do competitors offer that you do not?

A competitor-validated topic carries less risk than an untested one.

## Build a competitive content matrix

Give each shared topic one row with six columns:

| Topic or keyword | Your coverage | Competitor A | Competitor B | Competitor C | Gap note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "email subject line tips" | URL, word count, position | URL, word count, position | URL, word count, position | URL, word count, position | What they include that you lack |

The matrix shows your position article by article, and it surfaces patterns. "Competitor B always includes video tutorials, and we never do." "Competitor C cites original research, and we rely on generic statistics."

## Turn the analysis into a plan

### Rank the work in four tiers

1. **High-traffic gaps.** Keywords where competitors rank in the top 10 and you have no page, with strong volume, such as 1,000 or more monthly searches.
2. **Depth upgrades.** Topics you cover thinly, around 800 words, while competitors win with guides of 2,500 words or more.
3. **Format upgrades.** Existing articles rewritten in the winning format, for example a text-heavy piece turned into a step-by-step tutorial with screenshots.
4. **Cluster expansion.** Supporting articles around your existing hubs until your cluster density matches competitors.

### Differentiate on validated topics

Competitors often converge: everyone covers the same topics the same way. Differentiation comes from what they all lack. Common openings are original data or research, your own tools or calculators, interactive formats, and deeper specialization where competitors stay general. Differentiation does not mean avoiding their topics. It means covering the same topics with value they do not offer, such as better design, more actionable steps, or stronger E-E-A-T signals.

### Refresh pages that already have a foothold

Refresh an existing article when one of four conditions holds:

- you rank 8 to 15 while the top 3 competitors have about twice your depth;
- your article is 18 months old and the top competitors updated within 3 months;
- your article has no media while competitors include 5 or more screenshots or videos;
- your advice is generic while competitors name specific tools and include tutorials.

These pages already have ranking history, which shows relevance. A fix to the execution gap often pays faster than a new article. [The content refresh strategy guide](/articles/content-refresh-strategy-guide) covers the process.

## Go further with four advanced checks

**Backlink profiles.** In Ahrefs, find a competitor's top articles by organic traffic. Study which sites link to them, with what anchor text, and why. Group the links into resource pages, roundups, editorial mentions, and tool directories, and pick the tactics you can repeat. A competitor's "ultimate guide" may have more than 200 backlinks because it is the most complete resource. An 800-word version cannot compete, but a better guide with newer data, better design, and more examples can earn similar links.

**Performance history.** Historical data in Ahrefs or Semrush shows four trajectories. They are an immediate spike (trends and news), slow compounding growth (evergreen content), decay (content that needs freshness), and seasonal cycles. Use them to set expectations. Evergreen articles take 6 to 12 months to mature, and trending topics peak fast and fade.

**Media and format.** List what competitors offer beyond text: embedded video, calculators and quizzes, custom infographics and annotated screenshots, and downloadable templates and checklists. Top sites often offer media that text-only competitors lack, which is an opening for you.

**Technical patterns.** Review URL structure, internal link density, structured data types, page speed and Core Web Vitals, and mobile quality. Technical strength multiplies content strength, and competitors that excel at both dominate.

## Choose your tools

- **Ahrefs:** content gaps, backlinks, traffic estimates, rankings; Content Explorer finds top content by topic.
- **Semrush:** keyword gaps and content audits; Topic Research suggests ideas from competitor coverage.
- **BuzzSumo:** the most-shared content by topic across social platforms.
- **Clearscope or Surfer SEO:** term and structure recommendations drawn from top-ranking pages.
- **Screaming Frog:** crawls of competitor sites for internal links, structure, and full inventories.

## Make the audit a routine

Run a full audit once a year: complete inventory, keyword gaps, and cluster maps. Run lighter updates in the other three quarters to track new competitor content, ranking changes, and new patterns. Run an extra review after a major algorithm update or a shift in the competitive field.

Monitor between audits. Set Google Alerts for competitor publishing on your keywords, and follow competitor blogs by RSS. Use Semrush Position Tracking alerts for ranking gains and losses on tracked keywords.

Hold a monthly team review with four steps:

1. Present the month's top-performing competitor articles.
2. Discuss why each one worked: format, depth, angle, or promotion.
3. Name the patterns that apply to your strategy.
4. Assign articles to fill the gaps.

A shared review keeps insight from staying with one researcher. [The SEO competitor analysis framework](/articles/seo-competitor-analysis-framework) extends this beyond content.

## Avoid four analysis traps

**Copying instead of learning.** A lightly changed copy of a competitor article is a weaker duplicate. Study their structure, depth, and approach, then write original content for the same reader need. If competitors use 2,000-word tutorials with 6 to 8 H2 sections, that shows reader expectations. Meet them in your own voice with your own examples.

**Analysis paralysis.** Months of research without publishing helps nobody. Limit each quarter's analysis to 2 or 3 weeks, then act on it.

**Ignoring context.** A competitor's strategy may not transfer if their authority, resources, or audience differ. Do not chase an enterprise strategy with startup resources. When competitors have much higher domain authority, target long-tail keywords and narrow subtopics where authority matters less. Build full clusters instead of attacking head terms. Depth and topical relevance can close a moderate authority gap on specific queries.

**Competitor obsession.** The audit is one input. Audience research, keyword data, business goals, and your own positioning matter as much. For turning topic coverage into a structure, see [keyword clustering for content teams](/articles/keyword-clustering-content-teams).
