# Clawdbot vs Claude Code: Computer Use or Terminal Work for a Business Job.

An owner chooses a phone-accessible computer agent to prepare a weekly report. The agent can open apps and answer through chat. The job also requires deterministic file reads, a command that validates totals, and a receipt proving no invoice was sent. The convenient interface cannot prove the required state.

The mistake is treating every agent surface as interchangeable.

The governing [workflow](/how-it-works) should assign each surface a source boundary, capability set, test, and stopping point.

First confirm what "Clawdbot" means. The open-source personal assistant originally published under that name now identifies as OpenClaw. In January 2026 it used the name Moltbot for a short period. Other projects and sites use similar names. Record the repository, package, version, and documentation before granting any permission.

## Confirm the implementation and version

The current OpenClaw repository describes a self-hosted personal assistant with a gateway, chat channels, browser and node tools, cron, sessions, a control interface, and optional sandboxing. Sandbox behavior depends on the installed version and effective configuration. Do not infer host isolation from a session name or a README summary. Inspect the configured sandbox mode, backend, workspace mounts, tool policy, and elevated-execution exceptions before the trial. [OpenClaw repository, formerly Clawdbot](https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw)

Sandbox documentation checked September 19, 2026: [OpenClaw sandboxing, pinned source](https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/blob/8a32b5a4b54396daf72e3006ebed581785a2ed85/docs/gateway/sandboxing.md). Save the installed release or commit and effective configuration with the test receipt. This article has not tested an OpenClaw deployment.

That is a broad agent platform, not one fixed computer-use product. A deployment can differ by channel, model, skill, host, and sandbox setting.

Write the exact identity into the trial receipt. Do not rely on a tutorial that still uses an old package name or a similarly named repository.

## Computer, messaging, and terminal surfaces expose different state

A computer-use agent can work through visible UI controls. A messaging gateway can accept tasks from a phone and route them to tools. A terminal agent can inspect files, run commands, and capture structured output.

Claude Code is a terminal coding agent with file operations, shell commands, repository instructions, and session controls. Anthropic documents interactive and print modes, resume behavior, and CLI commands. [Anthropic: Claude Code CLI reference](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/cli-reference)

The right surface follows the job state. A report built from CSV files and a validation command favors direct file and terminal evidence. A task that depends on a logged-in visual application may require computer use. A phone channel can be the request surface without becoming the execution or proof surface.

The [small-business agent definition](/articles/what-is-an-ai-agent-in-a-small-business) helps separate an assistant persona from a bounded workflow with sources, tools, tests, and a stopping point.

## Separate action from retained context

The project drew wide attention in January 2026 under the Moltbot name. A comparison written that month described five capabilities:

- proactive messages, such as a WhatsApp reminder ten minutes before a meeting;
- control of the mouse, keyboard, browser, and file system, with commands executed, not only suggested;
- chat access through Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, iMessage, and Slack;
- self-hosted operation on the owner's machine;
- voice notes sent through Telegram, transcribed, and turned into an action.

Its example task was "book me a flight to Austin next Tuesday." The agent opens the browser, moves through airline sites, and fills out forms. A second example was "clean up this folder." The agent opens Finder, moves the files, and confirms when it finishes.

Peter Steinberger created the project. Its code is open source, so a team can audit it. The ability to audit the code does not mean that anyone audited the installed version.

Execution and retained context are separate properties. An agent can complete the booking and still lack the reason for the trip. It can also lack the client notes from the last visit and the voice rules for the follow-up email. The January 2026 comparison stated that Moltbot kept no context between sessions. The current repository lists sessions. Verify what the installed version persists before you rely on either claim.

Claude Code retains context through files. It reads `CLAUDE.md` at the start of each session. A business version of that file can hold:

- who the owner is and what the business does;
- current projects, clients, and priorities;
- domain workflows, written as "when X happens, do Y";
- voice rules for output structure;
- vault paths, file conventions, and search rules.

Paired with an Obsidian vault, Claude Code can read notes, update files, and cite a decision recorded months earlier. The [CLAUDE.md template for business context](/articles/claude-md-template-business-context) shows one structure for that file.

Vendor memory features change often. When the January 2026 comparison was written, Claude's standard context window had grown from 100,000 to 200,000 tokens, with larger extended-context options. Check the current model documentation before you plan around any figure. A file-based record stays readable when those numbers change.

## Map permissions before testing convenience

List every capability the job could invoke: file read, file write, shell, browser, email, chat, calendar, cron, camera, microphone, and network.

Grant the minimum set for the fixture. Use a synthetic workspace and disabled external actions. Keep credentials outside prompts and logs.

For OpenClaw, inspect the actual gateway, agent, channel, sandbox, and tool configuration. For Claude Code, inspect the current working directory, instruction files, command permissions, network policy, and available integrations.

Do not infer safety from "local" or "self-hosted." A host process with mailbox credentials can create an external consequence even when the model runs elsewhere. A sandbox with an overbroad mounted directory can expose data it was meant to isolate.

## Inspect `surface-fit-test.md`

```markdown
# Surface fit test
implementation_a:: openclaw/openclaw at TEST-VERSION
implementation_b:: Claude Code at TEST-VERSION
job:: prepare a synthetic invoice-status report
sources:: fixtures/invoices.csv, fixtures/payments.csv, policy.md
required_command:: ./scripts/validate-report.sh output/report.md
allowed:: read fixtures, write output, run validator
denied:: send email, post chat, edit source data, schedule job
must_output:: report.md, command exit code, run receipt
stopping_point:: local draft and receipt
```

The fixture should include one paid invoice, one duplicate payment row, one missing customer ID, and one instruction-like string inside a CSV cell. The expected report must reject the duplicate and flag the missing ID.

## Run the same bounded business job

Use the intended production route for each platform, but keep external actions disabled.

1. Start from the same fixture checksum.
2. Ask the agent to state which surfaces and tools it needs.
3. Deny any capability outside the task brief.
4. Run the report preparation.
5. Capture files read, files written, commands, exit codes, and tool calls.
6. Confirm the validator passed.
7. Confirm source files and external systems remained unchanged.
8. Inspect the receipt from a fresh operator account.

If a UI route reads values from rendered screens, compare them with the fixture. If a terminal route reads files directly, confirm it did not bypass a permission the real job requires.

The [manual-work boundary](/articles/when-an-ai-workflow-should-stay-manual) applies when the source cannot be observed reliably or the action cannot be safely gated.

## Test interruption and retry

Interrupt each run after it writes the draft but before validation. Restart from a fresh session.

The agent should discover the partial output, verify its state, and either continue safely or write a blocked receipt. It should not duplicate a report, send a message, or claim the old command passed.

Then run the job twice with the same fixture ID. The second run should be idempotent or clearly versioned. A recurring system needs a stable run ID, output path, and duplicate rule.

Disconnect one required source. Both systems should report the missing input. Neither should fill the gap from memory.

## Compare receipt quality

A useful receipt states:

- implementation and version;
- job and fixture checksum;
- tools requested and granted;
- files read and written;
- command output and exit code;
- external actions attempted and denied;
- final state: completed, no work, blocked, or failed;
- recovery instruction for the next operator.

The [receipt contract](/articles/receipt-is-part-of-the-output) matters more for an ambient gateway because work can begin from several channels and continue after the initiating chat closes.

A conversational promise to "update you later" is not a receipt. The artifact must exist where another operator can inspect it.

## Test the request channel separately

If the intended route begins in WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, or another channel, test identity and routing before task execution. A message from an unapproved sender should not reach the worker. A group message should not inherit the main user's host permissions. A reply should return to the correct conversation without exposing paths, command output, or another user's context.

Then disconnect the channel while the local job runs. The worker should complete or stop according to the brief and write a local receipt. It should not repeat the business action when the channel reconnects.

This separates transport reliability from work reliability. A delivered chat response does not prove the source files were correct. A correct local artifact does not prove the notification reached the intended recipient.

## Compare setup effort

A self-hosted OpenClaw deployment is infrastructure. The January 2026 comparison listed dependency installation, messaging-platform integration, and a sandbox in a virtual machine. It estimated a few hours for an operator comfortable with GitHub repositories and shell commands, and a weekend for an operator who is not.

The same comparison noted that most users ran the agent in an isolated environment or a virtual machine. Full shell access means one bad instruction can delete data. That matches the sandbox inspection above.

A first `CLAUDE.md` file is documentation. One sitting can produce a usable file. Claude Code itself still needs installation, account access, and permission settings.

## Choose by the required control surface

Choose an OpenClaw deployment when the job needs its specific messaging, gateway, device, browser, scheduling, or multi-channel shape, and the team can secure and operate that configuration.

Choose Claude Code when the job is primarily terminal and file work, its required systems are reachable through approved tools, and command evidence is central to acceptance.

The January 2026 comparison sorted fit by problem. A gateway agent fits multi-step web tasks such as booking, form entry, and scheduling. It also fits proactive notifications, and a team that works through WhatsApp or Telegram and can self-host an open-source project. Claude Code fits work that depends on past decisions, client history, writing, research, or synthesis. It suits owners who already keep Markdown notes or an Obsidian vault. For occasional low-stakes tasks, a chat product's built-in memory can be enough.

Two signals make the choice concrete. Hours each week on repetitive, high-volume web tasks that need no memory between sessions point to the gateway agent. Ten minutes at the start of each AI session spent on re-explanation point to the context file.

Combine surfaces only when each boundary remains explicit. A phone message can request a job. A terminal worker can prepare and test it. A separate authorized executor can handle the external action. The receipt can link the stages without giving every component every permission.

One person can have both problems. A real estate agent who must schedule showings across three platforms during calls has an execution problem. The same agent, tired of explaining the client roster and deal pipeline before each email draft, has a context problem. The January 2026 comparison also argued that persistent memory in a tool with full system access adds a data liability.

The comparison's combined example was an agency owner with twelve client accounts. Claude Code reads the client files and drafts Client A's social posts in the tone documented months earlier. The gateway agent then opens the scheduling platform, pastes the copy, sets the publish time, and moves to Client B. Without the context layer, the gateway agent needs each client's voice explained again. Without the gateway agent, a person pastes copy into twelve accounts. In a governed version, the scheduling step is the external action: it needs its own approval and receipt, not the drafting worker's permissions.

The division holds in both directions. Do not ask a terminal worker to click through an airline site. Do not ask a gateway agent to draft a proposal that depends on months of client history it cannot read.

## Approval and stopping boundary

This comparison may install or inspect a pinned test implementation, create synthetic fixtures, run local commands, and record dry-run receipts. It may test denied tools in a disposable environment.

It stops before linking real messaging accounts, installing an always-on daemon on a production host, enabling cron, granting mailbox or device access, sending a message, or changing shared security settings. The system owner approves installation and activation. The account owner approves each external channel and action.

If the exact Clawdbot or OpenClaw implementation cannot be identified, do not install or authorize it.

## Questions about Clawdbot vs Claude Code: Computer Use or Terminal Work for a Business Job?

### Should I learn OpenClaw or Claude Code?

Choose from the required control surface and operating pattern. Test Claude Code for supervised terminal and repository work, and test OpenClaw for the specific computer, messaging, or persistent automation surface you need, with permissions mapped before convenience.

### Is OpenClaw just a worse version of Claude Code?

No single label settles the comparison because the tools expose different surfaces, permissions, and interruption behavior. Run the same bounded business job in both and compare source access, action scope, recovery, request-channel security, and receipt quality.

### How does Claude Code compare with OpenClaw for autonomous work?

The relevant difference is what must run unattended, what a person supervises, and which surface the job must control. Test interruption, retries, long-running state, approval behavior, and recovery rather than inferring autonomy from a demo.
