# Compare Claude and Gemini memory by where the context lives and who controls it.

You want an AI that remembers your work, and the choice is between Claude and Gemini. The two products answer "memory" in different ways. Claude gives you context in files: files you upload to a Project, or files on your own disk that Claude Code reads. Gemini gives you access to what already sits in your Google account.

This article compares where each product keeps the context, what it keeps, who controls it, and which kind of work each one fits. Product details come from an observation dated January 2026. Both vendors change these features often, so recheck the current help pages before you decide.

## How Claude keeps context: Projects and local files

Claude keeps context through two features: Projects in the web app, and Claude Code on your computer.

### Claude Projects

A Project holds files that persist across the conversations inside it. You upload the business plan, client documents, codebase, or style guide once. Each conversation in that Project can use those files.

A Project accepts PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, and JSON files, plus Excel workbooks. Each file can be up to 30 MB. There is no cap on the number of files, but the content must fit the Project's capacity. Anthropic's upload page listed these limits on 2026.09.25.

In January 2026, each Project had a 200,000-token context window, about 500 pages. By September 2026, Anthropic listed a 1-million-token window for some newer models. On the Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, a Project near its limit switches to retrieval and can hold up to ten times as much. You write custom instructions for the Project, and each conversation starts with them and the files. Closing a chat does not remove the files.

### Claude Code

Claude Code is a command-line tool that reads files on your computer. Start it in a project folder, and it can read the codebase, a `CLAUDE.md` context file, and your client documents.

Write a `CLAUDE.md` file with your business context, rules, client details, and project architecture. Claude Code reads it at the start of each session. Change the file, and the next session uses the change. Put the file under Git, and you have a full history of every change.

Across both features, Claude keeps:

- everything in the Project files or the local folder;
- Project context across all conversations in that Project;
- code architecture and dependencies;
- custom instructions and preferences;
- client details, business rules, and style guides.

It does not keep:

- conversations from other Projects, because each Project is separate;
- files that you did not upload or point it to;
- context from cloud services, unless you download those files and add them.

The [Claude Projects and Claude Code comparison](/articles/claude-projects-vs-claude-code) explains when a Project is enough and when you need local file access.

## How Gemini keeps context: Personal Intelligence

Google launched Personal Intelligence for Gemini on 2026.01.14. The beta went to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers with personal accounts in the US. It is not file-based memory. It connects Gemini to your Google account.

You connect Gemini to Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, Search history, and other Google services. Gemini can then use that data to answer a question. Ask, "What did my accountant email me last month?" and Gemini searches Gmail and returns the answer.

Gemini selects what to use. It does not load your whole Drive into context. It picks the most relevant documents, emails, or images for each question. At launch, Google said the feature worked with all Gemini 3 models. Gemini 3 Pro, announced in November 2025, accepts up to one million input tokens.

Gemini keeps:

- everything in the connected Google apps, such as Gmail, Drive, and Photos;
- personal details you state in conversation;
- preferences and working style;
- data from across your Google account, without uploads.

It does not keep:

- conversations from before you turned on Personal Intelligence;
- files outside Google's services;
- project context that carries across separate conversations;
- local files, unless you first upload them to Drive.

The million-token window applies to one conversation. A new chat starts fresh. Gemini can pull from your Google data again, but it has no persistent project layer like a Claude Project. The [Gemini memory guide](/articles/make-gemini-remember-past-conversations) covers the settings that carry context between Gemini chats.

Personal Intelligence is off by default, and you choose which apps to connect. Google says Gemini does not train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library; it refers to them to answer questions. Google does train on limited information, such as your prompts and Gemini's responses. The data stays in your Google account, and Gemini reads it while the feature is on.

## Compare the two side by side

| Feature | Claude (Projects and Claude Code) | Gemini Personal Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Where context lives | Local files, or files uploaded to a Project | Your Google account services |
| Data control | You own the files and their versions | Google runs the infrastructure; you control the connections |
| Context window, January 2026 | 200,000 tokens; about 2 million with Project retrieval | 1 million tokens |
| Persistence | Files persist across all chats in a Project | Pulls data per conversation; no project layer |
| File formats | PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, code, Excel | Any format in Drive, read when needed |
| Setup | Upload to a Project, or start Claude Code in a folder | Connect Google apps |
| Storage | Your disk, or Anthropic's servers for Projects | Google's servers |
| Plan cost | Entry plan priced about the same as Google AI Pro; Max costs more | Google AI Pro; Ultra costs more |
| Works with | Local file system, Git, any tool that reads files | Google services |

The plan comparison reflects January 2026. Current prices are on each vendor's plan page.

## See who controls the memory

Claude's approach is file-based. You create the files, update them, version them, and back them up. Claude reads what you give it. With Claude Code, the context file sits in your project folder, and there is no upload or sync step.

Gemini's approach is account-based. It reads your Google data when a question needs it. That is convenient if your work already lives in Google. The memory is not a file you maintain. It is Google's infrastructure serving your data to Gemini on request.

Both work, and they solve different problems. The [memory ownership test](/articles/do-you-own-ai-memory) gives a way to check what you can inspect, correct, export, and move in each route.

One privacy detail needs care. Claude Code keeps your files on your disk, but the content it reads goes to Anthropic for processing during the session. Files uploaded to a Project sit on Anthropic's servers. Gemini's connected data stays in Google's services, and Gemini reads it there. In each case, decide which records the AI may read before you connect anything.

## Know where each product is stronger

Claude is stronger on control and structure:

- **Local control.** With Claude Code, files live on your disk. You version them, back them up, and decide what Claude reads.
- **Persistent project context.** Upload once to a Project, and each conversation there has the files.
- **Developer workflows.** Claude Code works with Git, your editor, and your build process, and it reads the whole project structure.
- **Portability.** A `CLAUDE.md` file is plain Markdown that any tool can read. You are not tied to one vendor's services.

Gemini is stronger on reach inside Google:

- **No upload step.** Connect the Google apps, and Gemini can read them.
- **Several data sources at once.** Gmail, Drive, Photos, Calendar, and Search history are all available without downloads.
- **A larger base window in January 2026.** One million tokens against Claude's 200,000 at that date, although Claude Projects extend further with retrieval.
- **Google Workspace businesses.** If the business runs on Workspace, Personal Intelligence gives quick AI access to that data.

## Worked example: two business questions

Test each product with two questions from your own work.

The first question is a lookup: "What did my accountant email me last month about the quarterly filing?" Gemini with Gmail connected answers this directly, because the answer is an email in your account. Claude answers it only if you export the thread into a Project or a folder first.

The second question needs an approved record: "What is the approved scope for Client A, and what did we decide to exclude?" In Claude Code, `clients/client-a/scope.md` holds the current scope and the exclusions, with a date and an owner. Claude reads that file and cites it. Gemini searches Drive and Gmail and may find the approved scope document, an older draft, and an email that proposed a change. It has no rule for which one is current unless a document says so.

Score each answer on three checks: the right value, the cited source, and the absence of superseded versions. The lookup question favors Gemini. The approved-record question favors a maintained file. Most businesses have both kinds of question. Many use Gemini for account lookups and a file-based route for records that must be right.

## Choose by the job

Choose Claude if you want control. File-based context means you own it, version it, and update it yourself. Claude Code with a `CLAUDE.md` file gives you persistent context without dependence on one vendor's services.

Choose Gemini if your work lives in Google. Personal Intelligence is strong for people whose work sits in Gmail and Drive, with no uploads.

Only the file route gives you the record itself. Gemini's memory runs on Google's infrastructure. Claude Code's context is a file on your disk. For owners who manage several clients or complex projects, a maintained file is the more reliable source of truth. The [ChatGPT and Gemini memory comparison](/articles/chatgpt-vs-gemini-memory-business) applies the same test to the third major product.

Memory features in all these products change several times a year. A file-based record does not have to change when a product does.
