# Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects for Business Memory.

Months of planning live in a ChatGPT Project. The buyer wants to try Claude's scoped Project workflow. Files can be copied, but nobody knows which project instructions, chat-derived memories, corrections, and sharing rules will survive the move.

Copying files is not the same as moving a working project.

The business record must remain understandable before, during, and after that move.

Compare Claude Projects and ChatGPT Projects through one recurring job. Keep the authoritative packet outside both so portability has a stable target.

## Projects change the comparison from personal memory to work scope

A personal memory feature helps a product remember preferences or prior interactions. A Project adds a work boundary containing files, instructions, chats, and other project-specific context.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Projects as workspaces that group chats, files, links, saved responses, tools, and project instructions. Project-only memory limits context to conversations in that project, and shared projects use that mode. [OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521-projects-in-chatgpt)

Anthropic describes Claude Projects as self-contained workspaces with their own chat histories, knowledge bases, and project instructions. Claude's memory documentation says each project has a separate memory space and project summary when memory is enabled. [Anthropic: What are projects?](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9517075-what-are-projects) [Anthropic: Claude memory](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context)

Both can support serious work. The buyer should test scope, not rely on the shared word “Project.”

## ChatGPT Projects: memory, files, and instructions

A ChatGPT Project can combine uploaded files, project instructions, chats, and supported links or tools. OpenAI distinguishes default memory from project-only memory. Existing projects may have different settings from newly created projects.

For business use, record the project mode, account plan, workspace, members, source list, instruction revision, and test date. If the project is shared, verify what collaborators can see and whether their personal context is excluded as documented.

Do not treat project chat history as an approved decision log. Promote accepted decisions into a maintained file.

## Claude Projects: memory, files, and isolation

Claude Projects accept knowledge and project instructions. A separate guide shows [how to write Claude project instructions](/articles/how-to-write-claude-project-instructions) as a short work contract. Anthropic's current retrieval guidance says Projects can switch to retrieval when knowledge approaches the context limit, selecting relevant material rather than placing all content into context at once. [Anthropic: RAG for Projects](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11473015-retrieval-augmented-generation-rag-for-projects)

Retrieval capacity is useful, but a larger corpus increases the need for source roles. An archive, accepted policy, and draft should not compete as equal chunks. Label authority inside the files and constrain the allowed packet.

Project memory can add continuity across chats. Test whether that continuity helps the job or lets old discussion compete with the current record.

## Compare the web Projects with Claude Code

Anthropic offers two project systems. Web Projects resemble ChatGPT Projects: project knowledge, custom instructions, chats grouped by project, and Artifacts for documents, code, and visuals. Claude Code works differently. It reads files from your file system instead of an upload. It reads `CLAUDE.md` files at session start, reads any file in the project directory, creates and edits files, and runs terminal commands and scripts. Its context is scoped by directory.

The main difference is where context lives. ChatGPT Projects and Claude web Projects keep context in the vendor's cloud. Claude Code reads context from your disk. That context lasts as long as the files do, changes when you edit a file, and fits workflows that already run on files. The file stays on your disk, but the text a session reads goes to Anthropic for processing. Retention and training terms depend on the plan.

The table records the January 2026 state. Recheck each row before a purchase.

| Feature | ChatGPT Projects | Claude web Projects and Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| File uploads | Yes, many file types | Yes, plus local file access through Claude Code |
| Instructions | Per-project instructions | Per-project instructions, plus `CLAUDE.md` files |
| Memory across sessions | Memory feature; project-only mode in shared projects | Project memory on the web; `CLAUDE.md` in Claude Code |
| File system reads and writes | No | Yes, through Claude Code |
| Context window | Varies by model and plan | 200,000 tokens on paid plans |
| Code execution | Code Interpreter inside the chat | Terminal commands through Claude Code |
| Command-line interface | None | Claude Code |
| Image generation and web browsing | Both | Web search from 2025; no image generation |

The entry paid plans cost the same in January 2026. At the higher tier, Claude's lower Max tier, which includes Claude Code, cost about half as much as ChatGPT Pro. ChatGPT's free plan offered limited Projects, and Claude's free plan did not include Claude Code. Current prices are on each vendor's plan page.

ChatGPT Projects offer a familiar interface, easy uploads, Code Interpreter for analysis, image generation, and browsing. For business memory, they have four limits. Saved memory is inconsistent and stores brief summaries, not full context. The Project has no file system access. It has no write path to your files. And the context still resets between sessions.

The memory controls also differ. ChatGPT decides which facts to save, and you can view and delete saved memories. A long ChatGPT thread can still run past the context window. With Claude Code, you write exactly what `CLAUDE.md` says, and the file changes only when you edit it.

## Match the workspace to the task type

| Task | Better fit in January 2026 | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Quick research on an uploaded document | ChatGPT Projects | No setup; Code Interpreter processes data files; browsing adds web sources |
| Ongoing business operations | Claude Code | `CLAUDE.md` carries the business context; output lands in your files; terminal access supports automation |
| One-off content | Either | ChatGPT is faster to start |
| Systematic content production | Claude Code | Brand rules sit in `CLAUDE.md`, templates in files, and output goes to the publishing folder |
| Code development | Claude Code | It reads the codebase, writes files, and runs tests; ChatGPT needs copy and paste between windows |
| Creative brainstorming | ChatGPT Projects | Image generation, browsing, and a polished interface; persistent memory matters less |

Many teams run both: ChatGPT for quick and exploratory tasks, and Claude Code for operations where accumulated context adds value. That split works when both routes read the same approved packet described below.

## Sharing and cross-client boundaries

Create one project per synthetic client. Use distinct canary values. Invite only test users needed for the role matrix. Then ask each project for a fact that exists only in the other project.

The expected result is a missing-source response, not a helpful guess.

Project separation also needs an account boundary. A user may belong to multiple workspaces or organizations. Record the workspace identity and active project ID in the receipt.

The [separate business contexts guide](/articles/separate-business-contexts-ai-agents) gives the broader runtime test. Visual separation must match retrieval and write permissions.

## Source refresh and correction behavior

Put the controlling facts in four files:

- `context.md` for current stable facts;
- `decisions.md` for approved choices;
- `corrections.md` for accepted fixes;
- `task-brief.md` for the job and stopping point.

Upload the same revisions to both projects. Run once. Change one decision in the owned source. Refresh the Project copy through the normal operator process. Run from a new chat.

The correction passes only when the result changes, the old value disappears, and the receipt names the current source. The [correction-system article](/articles/corrections-become-system-memory) explains why a written fix without a rerun is incomplete.

## Inspect `projects-portability-test.md`

Use this fixture to compare both products and a clean replacement route.

```text
test_id:: PROJECT-PORTABILITY-01
job:: prepare weekly account brief
owned_packet:: context.md, decisions.md, corrections.md, task-brief.md
current_marker:: SCOPE-GREEN-45
superseded_marker:: SCOPE-AMBER-30
other_project_canary:: CLIENT-BLUE-928
required_output:: completed work, blocker, next approved action, sources
must_not:: use other-project canary; promise date; send message
stopping_point:: draft and receipt
chatgpt_mode:: project-only memory
claude_mode:: project memory enabled and recorded
replacement_route:: fresh model with owned packet only
pass:: all three routes use current marker and correction
```

The owned-packet route is the control. The product routes may add convenience, but they should not change the approved business answer.

## Export and replacement test

For a managed ChatGPT workspace, compare [Business Projects with an owned record](/articles/owned-business-memory-vs-chatgpt-team-projects) before assuming an export is a full exit path.

Export what each product permits. Download the original source files. Save project instructions separately. Record members, settings, tools, links, and memory state. Preserve chat exports as evidence, not as the current record.

Then remove access to the original Project fixtures. Give a fresh model only the owned packet and task. If it cannot complete the job, the packet is incomplete.

The [model replacement guide](/articles/switch-ai-models-without-losing-context) covers adapter changes and acceptance criteria in more detail.

Do not claim a full migration because both products accept the same file types. Conversation structure, memory, permissions, source links, and product objects may require manual reconstruction.

## Decision table for one recurring job

Choose ChatGPT Projects when the tested work benefits from ChatGPT's project mode, sharing behavior, and supported tools. Choose Claude Projects when its project knowledge, instructions, retrieval, and memory isolation fit better.

Usage pattern also points to a product. ChatGPT Projects fit occasional, varied tasks, a team already on ChatGPT, and work that needs image generation or browsing. Claude Code fits daily operations, file-based workflows, and repeated tasks where accumulated context improves the output.

Two limits apply to Claude Code. Its setup assumes some comfort with a terminal. If staff need a browser-only interface, Claude web Projects give project memory in a visual interface. A `CLAUDE.md` file serves one person until the team shares it through Git, which needs technical setup. For team-wide memory, a managed ChatGPT workspace with shared projects can be an easier start.

Use both if distinct teams or jobs benefit, provided they consume the same approved packet. Avoid constant project copying when one owned source and two thin adapters will do.

Your decision record should name:

- the selected project product;
- account and workspace owner;
- source refresh method;
- memory mode;
- allowed tools;
- export route;
- quarterly portability test.

## Run the project fixture

Complete these checks with synthetic records:

1. Create one Project in each product.
2. Add the same brief and three business files.
3. Add an archived conflicting decision.
4. Run the same weekly brief.
5. Start a second chat and test continuity.
6. Create a second-client Project with a canary.
7. Confirm no cross-project retrieval.
8. Correct the current decision and refresh both projects.
9. Confirm a fresh run changes.
10. Export files, settings, and available history.
11. Run the owned packet through a fresh model.
12. Record setup time, failures, and manual recovery steps.
13. Remove the required current decision file. Confirm each route reports the missing source and stops instead of filling the gap from history.

Choose from the evidence. Recheck when the provider changes memory or project behavior.

Save the outcome as a dated portability decision. Name the selected Project product, memory mode, workspace owner, source-refresh route, canonical packet, allowed tools, sharing scope, export location, and next test date. Include the observed reconstruction steps for the rejected route. A future operator should be able to understand why the choice was made without opening either product's chat history. Reopen the decision after a membership, memory, connector, retrieval, or plan change.

A missing required decision is a blocked result. Reserve `no_work` for a valid run with no eligible item. Either route fails this fixture if it fills a required-source gap from old chats, even when the guessed answer appears correct.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The comparison may create synthetic Projects, upload fixture files, use test sharing, inspect memory settings, export test data, and run a replacement model.

It stops before moving live client Projects, inviting real users, uploading private archives, enabling connectors, deleting project memory, changing organization settings, canceling subscriptions, or selecting a company-wide platform. The workspace owner and data owner approve those actions.

If the two Projects produce different material decisions, the evaluator reports the sources and stops. It does not blend the outputs into a compromise.

## Questions about Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects for Business Memory

### How is it an advantage and disadvantage that Claude silos memory within projects compared to ChatGPT's unified memory model?

Project isolation can reduce cross-project contamination and make the source boundary easier to inspect. Broader memory can reduce repetition, but it also requires stronger testing to prove unrelated personal or client context does not enter the job.

### Which approach retains more useful context over time, Claude Projects or ChatGPT's memory?

Retention is useful only when the product retrieves the right current source and handles corrections predictably. Load the same files and instructions, run the same recurring job, change one controlling fact, and compare each project's next output.

### Is there a point to Claude Projects besides organizing chats?

A project can provide scoped instructions, files, and conversation context for one recurring body of work. It should still point to maintained business sources and pass an export and replacement test before the business treats it as durable memory.
