# Stop Claude from forgetting your business between sessions with context files.

You teach Claude your business processes. You teach it your writing style. You spend three sessions on one piece of work together. Then you close the window.

In the next session, Claude does not know who you are or what you were working on. You explain it again, and the time you meant to save goes into repetition.

This is not a bug. A conversation works inside a context window, and a new conversation starts with an empty one. Claude's memory and Projects features carry some context forward, within limits. This article shows where each layer stops and how a set of Markdown files fills the gap. If Claude remembers something wrong instead of forgetting it, read [how to correct a wrong Claude memory](/articles/correct-wrong-claude-memory).

## Know why a new session starts empty

Claude processes a conversation in its context window, a fixed amount of text it can work with at once. When the conversation ends, that window is gone. A new conversation cannot read the old window. The model does not choose to forget; the design does not carry the window forward.

Memory and search features change that picture only in part. Anthropic added memory and chat search to paid plans in stages. Depending on the plan, the settings, and whether the chat sits inside a project, some earlier context can come back. Outside that scope, or with the features turned off, each conversation starts fresh.

Without a carried-forward layer, you lose these every time:

- your preferences and working style;
- the business rules you explained;
- ongoing projects and their status;
- the files you discussed or created;
- the decisions from earlier sessions.

The first step is to find out which layer failed. The [Claude memory evaluation](/articles/is-claude-memory-worth-it-business) gives a boundary test for memory and search in your own account.

## Know where Claude Projects stop

Anthropic built Projects for this problem. You create a project, write project instructions, and upload knowledge files. The instructions load into each conversation in that project. Your role, company details, and preferred formats persist across chats in the same project.

Projects work for basic context. A January 2026 review of Projects found five limits:

- The instruction field had a practical size limit. Anthropic publishes no fixed number, so measure the field in your own account.
- Uploaded knowledge files were static copies. Each one stayed as uploaded until someone replaced it.
- Each update meant a manual edit in the project settings.
- A project had no built-in way to organize context by domain or topic.
- Projects did not share context. Each one stayed a silo.

For a simple use case, Projects are enough. For work across several clients, ongoing tasks, and business systems, they run short. The [Claude instruction limits article](/articles/claude-custom-project-instructions-limits) explains how to give each rule the right scope.

## Store context in files that Claude reads

Claude Code, Anthropic's command-line tool, reads files on your machine. That makes a different memory design possible.

Instead of built-in memory or project instructions, you store context in Markdown files. One main file, `CLAUDE.md`, holds your core instructions, preferences, and rules. Domain files hold the special context: client details, project status, and business processes.

At the start of a session, Claude Code reads `CLAUDE.md`, and then it reads the domain files a task needs. It knows:

- who you are and what you do;
- the current projects and their status;
- your business rules and processes;
- client information and history;
- your communication preferences.

As your work changes, you update the files. Claude's "memory" stays current because it reads maintained documents, not a project setting that nobody reopened. The [business CLAUDE.md template](/articles/claude-md-template-business-context) shows what the main file should contain and what it should leave to other files.

## Use Obsidian to keep the files organized

You can manage context files in any editor, but a large set becomes tedious. Obsidian is a Markdown editor that treats a folder of files as a knowledge base. You create notes, link them, and organize them in folders. Everything stays in plain text files that you own.

For Claude memory, Obsidian gives you five things:

- one vault that holds all the context files;
- domain folders for separate areas, such as work, clients, and projects;
- wiki-style links that connect related records;
- search across thousands of files;
- templates that give new context files a standard shape.

Claude Code works directly on the vault folder. It can read files, search content, and propose updates to context. Your sessions keep state because the files keep state. Start Claude Code in a scoped business folder, not at the root of a personal vault. The [Claude and Obsidian connection guide](/articles/connect-claude-obsidian-business-memory) covers the permission setup.

## Worked example: a consultant with eight clients

You run a consulting business with eight active clients. Each client has a folder with project notes, message history, deliverable status, and open issues:

```text
vault/
  CLAUDE.md
  clients/
    client-a/
      context.md
      status.md
      history.md
    client-b/
      ...
  processes/
    content-production.md
    client-management.md
  templates/
    status-update.md
```

`CLAUDE.md` holds your business rules, client management procedures, content production workflow, and communication templates. It points to the client folders and says: "Read the client's `context.md` and `status.md` before any client work."

On Monday, you start a session and ask for a status update for Client A. Claude Code reads `clients/client-a/context.md` and `status.md`. It knows the project status, the open tasks, and the last three messages. You explain nothing.

At the end of the session, you ask Claude Code to propose updates to `status.md`: the decisions made, tasks completed, and next steps. You review the change and accept it. The vault stays current because each session ends with a reviewed update.

The next week, you ask about Client A again. Last week's decisions are in the file, so the session starts where the last one ended.

Test the setup once before you rely on it:

1. Start a new session and ask for Client A's next step. Confirm that the answer cites `status.md`.
2. Ask for a detail that exists only in Client B's folder, while the task names Client A. Confirm that Claude Code does not bring Client B's detail into the answer.
3. Change one fact in `status.md` and start a new session. Confirm that the new value appears.
4. Remove `status.md` for the test. Confirm that Claude Code reports the missing file instead of guessing.

If step 2 fails, two clients share a file, or one rule in `CLAUDE.md` names both clients. Split the shared material into each client's folder before you add a ninth client.

## Choose written memory over inferred memory

AI vendors will keep improving memory features. They will get better at inferring what to keep and when to use it. Inferred memory still guesses at what matters from patterns, not from your stated intent.

File-based context puts you in control. You decide what Claude keeps. You organize it the way you work. You update it when things change.

Chat features solve smaller problems. ChatGPT's memory, for example, stores short facts from past conversations. It can keep the fact that you like short emails. It cannot hold your business processes, client details, and decision frameworks. Chat history is a log you scroll through; memory is structured context that loads into each new session.

The files also work with any AI that reads files. If you move from Claude to another model, the context files move with you. The memory is not locked in one product.
