# Turn Slack decision threads into a Markdown archive Claude Code can search.

Slack is where the team makes decisions. Feature priorities get argued, customer feedback gets shared, and architecture debates get settled. Then the thread sinks under new messages.

You know the answer is in Slack somewhere. You cannot find it. Or you find the message but not the context around it. Or you recall the discussion but not the channel.

Claude Code could answer these questions from the source discussion, but it has no access to your Slack history. Each question about a past decision starts with you explaining it again. This article builds a Markdown archive of the threads that matter, which Claude Code reads.

## Know what gets lost in Slack

Slack is built for real-time communication, not long-term memory. These records sink fastest:

- the thread where the team chose a new pricing model;
- the customer feedback that explains why a feature exists;
- the technical discussion behind an architecture choice;
- the design decisions that stop the team from repeating a mistake;
- the team preferences and working styles that help a new hire.

Slack search finds a message. In January 2026, Slack AI, on the plans that included it, could also summarize a channel or thread inside Slack. Neither one built a decision record that an outside AI tool could read, or linked related discussions across channels into one answer. The [chat history article](/articles/chat-history-is-not-business-memory) explains why a message log is not a business record.

## Build the archive in four steps

1. Export the key Slack threads to Markdown files.
2. Store them in an Obsidian vault, organized by topic.
3. Write a `CLAUDE.md` that indexes the archive.
4. Start Claude Code in the vault when you need historical context.

Slack stays your communication tool. The vault becomes the team's memory. You are not building a bot.

## Choose which threads to export

Slack produces too much noise to export everything. Export the threads with decisions, context, or reference information you will need later:

| Thread type | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Decision threads | Feature priorities, pricing changes, strategic direction |
| Customer feedback | Problems, feature requests, use cases |
| Technical discussions | Architecture decisions, implementation details, trade-offs |
| Process documentation | How the team handles support, deploys, and code review |
| Post-mortems | What went wrong, what the team learned, what changed |
| Design rationale | Why the design took its form, and which options the team rejected |

Use one test. If a thread ends with "let's do X" or "we decided Y," export it. If it holds banter or routine status updates, skip it.

Slack threads name people and quote them. Before you export, decide who may read the archive, and keep private channels and direct messages out unless their owners agree.

## Export the threads

Choose one of three methods by team size.

**Manual export suits a small team.** Open the thread. Copy the messages into a Markdown file, one line per message with the timestamp and author. Add frontmatter with the channel, date, and topic.

**Workspace export suits a large archive.** An admin opens the workspace settings and chooses **Import/Export Data**. Slack produces JSON files for the messages. Convert the JSON to Markdown with a short script, or ask Claude Code to write and run one. Filter by channel and date range. As observed in January 2026, a standard export covered public channels; private channels and direct messages needed a higher plan and an approved request. Check your plan before you rely on it.

**Third-party archive tools** can export chosen channels or threads and format them as Markdown. Review what each tool stores and where, before you connect it to the workspace.

Whatever the method, the output is a clean Markdown file with clear metadata.

## Format each thread for Claude Code

Claude Code reads Markdown, not Slack's JSON. Format each exported thread like this:

```
---
channel: #product-strategy
date: 2026-01-15
topic: Q1 Pricing Changes
participants: Sales lead, Product lead, CEO
decision: Moving to usage-based pricing starting March 1
---
# Q1 Pricing Changes Discussion
**Sales lead [2:14 PM]**
We're seeing pushback on the annual contract requirement. Three prospects this week asked about monthly options.
**Product lead [2:18 PM]**
What if we did usage-based pricing instead? Pay per API call. No contract lock-in.
**CEO [2:22 PM]**
I like it. Lowers barrier to entry. We can still get recurring revenue.
**Sales lead [2:30 PM]**
Agreed. Let's target March 1 launch. I'll draft the new pricing page.
```

The frontmatter tells Claude Code what the discussion was about. The `decision` field states the outcome in one line, so Claude Code does not have to infer it from the messages. The message lines keep the flow and the reasons. The [meeting decisions article](/articles/ai-memory-meeting-notes-decisions) uses the same split between the decision and the talk.

## Organize the archive by topic

```
/Slack-Archive/
  /Product-Decisions/
    2026-01-15-pricing-changes.md
    2026-01-08-roadmap-priorities.md
  /Technical-Discussions/
    2025-12-20-database-migration.md
    2026-01-05-api-architecture.md
  /Customer-Feedback/
    2026-01-12-enterprise-feature-requests.md
    2025-12-28-onboarding-friction.md
  /Post-Mortems/
    2025-11-15-outage-analysis.md
  /Team-Processes/
    deployment-process.md
    code-review-standards.md
```

Organize by topic, not by channel. A discussion in `#engineering` belongs in Product-Decisions if it is about what to build. A thread in `#general` belongs in Customer-Feedback if it shares user insight. The date prefix in each file name keeps the history in order.

## Write the CLAUDE.md index

`CLAUDE.md` tells Claude Code what the archive holds and how to use it. Give it a channel guide, the archive structure, the team members with their roles and areas of expertise, a decision index, and search guidance:

```
## Slack Archive
All Slack discussions archived in `/Slack-Archive/` organized by topic.
### Key Decision Archive
- **Pricing model change**: `/Product-Decisions/2026-01-15-pricing-changes.md`. Moved to usage-based pricing, effective March 1.
- **Database migration**: `/Technical-Discussions/2025-12-20-database-migration.md`. Chose Postgres over MySQL; see the engineering lead's performance analysis.
- **Enterprise features**: `/Customer-Feedback/2026-01-12-enterprise-feature-requests.md`. Top requests: SSO, audit logs, custom roles.
When asked about past decisions, search `/Product-Decisions/` first. For technical context, check `/Technical-Discussions/`. For customer insights, see `/Customer-Feedback/`.
```

The decision index is the most useful part. It lets Claude Code answer the common question from one line, then open the full thread only when you need the reasons.

## Worked example: five jobs before and after

**"Why did we build this?"** Before, you search Slack, scroll through months of messages, and rebuild the decision from fragments. After, you ask, "Why did we add SSO?" Claude Code searches Product-Decisions and Customer-Feedback, finds the threads, and summarizes. Three enterprise prospects in Q4 required SSO for security compliance. The team ranked it above custom roles because it blocked those deals.

**Onboarding.** Before, a new hire asks questions, you answer, and the same questions return two weeks later. After, the new hire asks Claude Code. It explains how the team handles deploys, code review, and customer escalations, from the team's own discussions.

**Repeated debates.** Before, someone suggests an idea the team already tried and rejected. Nobody recalls why, so the debate starts again. After, you ask, "Did we consider this approach before?" Claude Code finds the original discussion and shows the reasons the team rejected it.

**Project proposals.** Before, you dig through Slack for customer feedback, technical limits, and past discussions. After, you ask Claude Code to draft a proposal for the audit log feature. It reads the customer feedback threads, the logging architecture discussion, and past proposals for format and tone. The draft rests on the team's real context.

**Working preferences.** Before, you forget that the sales lead prefers written updates, schedule a meeting, and get asked for a document instead. After, `CLAUDE.md` records each person's stated working preference. Claude Code reminds you when you plan the communication. Record only preferences that people stated for work use, and let each person see and correct their entry.

## Keep the archive current

**Each week,** export the threads with important decisions or discussions. Add frontmatter, and update the decision index in `CLAUDE.md`.

**Each month,** review the archive structure. Confirm that files sit in the right folders, that topics carry clear labels, and that nothing important is missing.

**Each quarter,** archive threads that no longer apply, merge related discussions, and update the team member information. The [retention and deletion policy article](/articles/ai-memory-retention-and-deletion-policy) covers when an exported thread should leave the archive.

The weekly export takes about 15 minutes.

## Know the limits of the archive

The archive is not a Slack bot. Claude Code does not answer messages in Slack, and you build no custom app.

It is not real-time sync. New messages do not reach the vault by themselves. You export a thread when it reaches a conclusion.

It does not replace Slack. The team still talks in Slack. The vault is for memory, not conversation. Slack handles the talk, the archive holds the outcome, and Claude Code reads the archive. If you are new to the tools, Claude Code installs with one terminal command, and Obsidian stores notes as plain Markdown files.
