# Export Google Workspace context to Markdown so Claude Code drafts from it.

Google Workspace holds your company's memory. Meeting notes sit in Docs. Client lists sit in Sheets. Proposal threads sit in Gmail. Claude Code can reach none of it.

So each time you ask Claude Code for an email, a proposal, or an analysis, you explain context that is already written down. You paste from Google Docs. You describe the columns of a spreadsheet. You rebuild information that exists.

The problem is not Google Workspace. The problem is that the AI has no path to what is stored there. This article builds that path with Markdown exports that Claude Code reads.

## Know what Claude Code is missing

Your Drive holds years of institutional knowledge: client profiles, project templates, standard operating procedures, and notes from each important meeting. Claude Code starts each session without any of it. It does not know:

- your client names, industries, or problems;
- your price structure or service packages;
- your writing style from dozens of past proposals;
- the decisions from last week's strategy meeting;
- your team's internal terms and abbreviations.

In January 2026, the AI features built into Google Workspace could summarize a single document. They could not connect information across the whole Drive, keep your preferences between sessions, or learn your business context. You need a context bridge between Workspace and Claude Code.

## Build the bridge in four steps

1. Export the key documents from Google Workspace to Markdown files.
2. Store them in an Obsidian vault with a clear folder structure.
3. Write a `CLAUDE.md` that tells Claude Code where each record lives.
4. Start Claude Code in the vault, so it reads the files when it needs context.

The vault becomes the AI's persistent memory. Google Workspace stays your active workspace.

A live connection through Google's APIs or an MCP server is another route. It needs OAuth scopes, a decision about which folders and mailboxes the agent may read, and a review of what the connector stores. The export route needs no credentials. Read [what client data belongs in agent memory](/articles/client-data-in-ai-agent-memory) before you move client records into any folder an agent reads.

## Export the right Google Docs

Do not export everything. Export the documents with context that Claude Code needs again and again:

| Document type | What it gives Claude Code |
|---|---|
| Client profiles | Names, industries, past work, communication preferences |
| Project templates | Standard proposal structure, contract terms, deliverable formats |
| Meeting notes | Decisions, action items, strategic direction |
| Process documentation | How you qualify leads, onboard clients, and deliver projects |
| Writing samples | Your best emails, proposals, and case studies, as a voice reference |

Google Docs exports Markdown directly. Open the document and choose **File > Download > Markdown (.md)**. Google added that option in July 2024. Older guides describe a plain-text download renamed to `.md`, or a browser extension; neither is necessary now.

Meeting notes need one more step. Keep the decision and its reason, not only the discussion. The [meeting notes and decisions article](/articles/ai-memory-meeting-notes-decisions) shows a format that separates decisions from talk.

## Export Sheets as tables and summaries

Claude Code cannot read a live spreadsheet. It can read exported data.

For lists and databases, export the sheet as CSV. Ask Claude Code to convert the CSV into a Markdown table, and store it in the vault as a reference file. Update it each month, or when the data changes in a way that matters.

For analysis and dashboards, export the conclusions, not the raw data. Write a short Markdown summary that says what the numbers mean. Claude Code then reads the summary.

For example, do not export 1,000 rows of client data. Export one file titled "Top 20 clients by revenue," with renewal dates, contract values, and key contacts. Claude Code reads that file, not the spreadsheet.

## Export the Gmail threads that changed something

Email threads hold client feedback, approvals, and scope changes. Gmail keeps them in its own interface. Export the important ones:

1. Open the thread and choose **Show original** to get the plain text.
2. Copy the text into a Markdown file.
3. Put the sender, date, and subject in the frontmatter.
4. Store the file in a client communications folder in the vault.

Do not export routine mail. Export the threads that changed a project's direction, clarified a requirement, or recorded a decision.

## Organize the vault

Give Claude Code a folder structure that it can navigate fast:

```
/Clients/
  /Acme-Corp/
    profile.md
    project-history.md
    communications.md
/Templates/
  proposal-template.md
  email-templates.md
  contract-terms.md
  pricing.md
/Processes/
  lead-qualification.md
  client-onboarding.md
  project-delivery.md
/Meetings/
  2026-01-15-strategy.md
  2026-01-22-team-sync.md
```

Start each Markdown file with frontmatter that tells Claude Code what it is reading:

```
---
type: client-profile
client: Acme Corp
industry: Manufacturing
last-updated: 2026-01-15
---
```

The `type` field separates profiles from templates and meeting notes. The `last-updated` field tells Claude Code how fresh the record is. The [Google Docs and Obsidian comparison](/articles/google-docs-vs-obsidian-ai-business-memory) explains why the vault copy, not the Doc, becomes the record the agent reads.

## Write the CLAUDE.md index

`CLAUDE.md` is the instruction manual for the vault. It should cover five things:

- **Who you are:** your role, your company, and your usual tasks.
- **Where files live:** the path structure and naming rules.
- **Client index:** each active client with its folder location.
- **Template guide:** which template to use for which job.
- **Voice guidelines:** writing style, tone, and banned phrases.

A client index section looks like this:

```
## Client Context
All client profiles stored in `/Clients/{ClientName}/profile.md`
Active clients:
- Acme Corp: Manufacturing, 3-year contract, contact: operations director
- Beta Industries: SaaS, monthly retainer, contact: head of marketing
When drafting client communications, always check profile.md first for context on past work, communication style, and current projects.
```

The last line is the rule that makes the index useful. It tells Claude Code to read the profile before it writes to a client.

## Worked example: four jobs before and after

**Client email.** Before, you tell Claude Code, "Write an email to Acme Corp about the project delay," and it writes a generic apology. After, it reads `/Clients/Acme-Corp/profile.md` and learns that the client prefers direct communication. It checks `communications.md` for the tone of past messages and `project-history.md` for the facts. The draft reads like a message from someone who has worked with the client for years.

**Proposal.** Before, you copy from old proposals, change the client names by hand, and explain your service packages again. After, Claude Code reads `proposal-template.md`, takes the client context from the profile, and reads `pricing.md` for current rates. It writes a complete proposal in your standard format.

**Meeting decisions.** Before, you search scattered Docs to recall what the team decided. After, the meeting notes are in the vault. You ask, "What did we decide about the Q2 campaign?" Claude Code searches the meeting files, summarizes the decisions, and quotes the relevant lines.

**Onboarding.** Before, you explain each process and send links to scattered Docs. After, Claude Code reads the process files. A new hire asks, "How do we qualify leads?" Claude Code explains your process, names the source document, and answers the follow-up questions.

## Keep the exports current

**Each week,** export new meeting notes and update the active client files with project changes.

**Each month,** refresh the Sheets exports, archive completed projects, and update process files if a workflow changed.

**Each quarter,** audit the vault structure. Delete outdated files, merge duplicates, and update `CLAUDE.md` with new context.

The upkeep stays small because you update only the files that changed. Most of the vault stays stable. The same routine works for other systems; the [Airtable version](/articles/claude-code-with-airtable) applies it to a database.

## Know the limits of the export route

The export route is not real-time sync. Google Docs does not update the vault. You export by hand when a document reaches a stable state.

It does not replace Google Workspace. You still work in Docs, Sheets, and Gmail, and the vault is Claude Code's memory.

It is not an API integration. You write no custom code and manage no tokens. You create Markdown files that Claude Code reads. If you are new to the tools, Claude Code installs with one terminal command, and Obsidian stores notes as plain Markdown. You can keep Notion or Google Docs for daily work and use the vault only for the context an agent needs.
