# Turn repeated Chrome prompts into Skills and keep business rules in owned files.

You write a good prompt in Gemini in Chrome. It compares two vendor pages against your buying criteria, and the table it returns is useful. A week later you need the same comparison. The prompt is somewhere in chat history, so you type a weaker version from memory.

Skills in Chrome remove that repeat step. Google describes them as saved AI prompts that run again with one click inside Gemini in Chrome. Google announced the feature on April 14, 2026, and the Workspace rollout followed in May. The button is small. The change is in the layer: the browser now keeps the moves you repeat, in addition to the pages you visit.

That change affects two things you control. The first is how your team saves and governs repeated prompts. The second is how your public pages perform when a reader runs a saved prompt on them.

## What Chrome Skills do

A Skill is a saved prompt. You save a useful prompt from Gemini chat history. You trigger it later from Gemini in Chrome. It runs against the page you are on, or against other tabs you select.

The feature is workflow memory, not a new model capability. Its value sits at the repeat step, where most AI use fails. A person writes one strong prompt, uses it once, and later rewrites a weaker copy because the original is lost in history. A Skill turns the repeated instruction into an object the browser can recall.

## Why the browser becomes a prompt layer

The browser already holds the live context. It knows the current page, the open tabs, the source URLs, and the moment the user wants something. A saved prompt in a blank chat window is only an instruction. A saved prompt in the browser attaches to the page in front of the user.

Operators do not need a new prompt each day. They need commands that run the same way when the page changes. Five examples show the shape:

- Summarize this vendor page against our buying criteria.
- Extract the pricing, limitations, and support terms.
- Compare these three pages in one table.
- Turn this article into an implementation checklist.
- Find the claims that need verification before we publish.

The wording of a command matters less than its consistency. The same command on a new page returns output in the same shape, so the team can compare results across pages and across weeks.

## What a saved prompt does to search behavior

When a user can run one analysis command across several pages, search results become inputs to a workflow. Your page must still rank. Ranking no longer ends the session.

A reader may compare your page with two competitors, extract your claims, summarize the options, or convert a buying question into a table. All of that can happen before the reader contacts any business. The assistant does the first full read of your page, and the reader sees its summary.

## Write pages that survive a saved command

A page written only for a ranked blue link can look thin once it becomes input to an assistant. The page must work after the click. It needs clean structure, clear claims, direct answers, and links that make the next step obvious.

Saved commands make source comparison easy. A reader can ask Gemini to list unsupported claims, or to extract steps from three pages at once. Pages with these properties hold up in that comparison:

- specific definitions;
- named limitations;
- concrete examples;
- headings that match a real question;
- internal links that explain the system behind a claim.

A strong page also implies the next command. A page about AI memory should make four next moves clear. Audit your repeated prompts. Capture your business context. Route the workflow into files. Decide which actions need approval.

When an assistant can turn your page into a checklist, the page stays useful inside the reader's workflow.

## Separate the prompt library from the memory layer

Saved prompts are useful. They are not an operating system for the business.

The browser can keep an instruction. It does not keep your clients, prices, source rules, approvals, or past decisions. That context belongs in durable files that the assistant can read as evidence. The [plain-text memory article](/articles/plain-text-ai-memory) explains why readable files outlast a vendor interface.

Keep the two layers distinct. The Skill holds the command. The file holds the facts that the command depends on. The instruction and the context change at different speeds, which is also why [a brief is different from a prompt](/articles/brief-vs-prompt).

Build each workflow in this order:

1. Name the repeated workflow.
2. Store the source context in a file.
3. Write the reusable command.
4. Decide what the command may do.
5. Log the output.
6. Promote a pattern to a standard command only after it proves useful.

## Gate the external effect

Google states that a Skill asks for confirmation before certain actions, such as a calendar event or an email send. That is the correct default, and the same rule applies to any business system. Drafting, summaries, and comparisons can run fast. Posts, emails, charges, deletions, and deployments need a person to approve them first. The [approval article](/articles/who-approves-what-an-ai-agent-sends) shows how to assign that approval by action type.

## Know where saved prompts stop

A saved command runs on the current page. It does not prove that the page is current, complete, or trustworthy. For public content, source drift still needs a receipt. The receipt records what was checked, when it was checked, and what changed. A [receipt is part of the output](/articles/receipt-is-part-of-the-output), not an extra step after it.

Business logic that lives only in a browser prompt is fragile. It can make you faster. It cannot become the canonical record. Owned context belongs in files, queues, and logs. The browser executes at the edge, and the memory lives in durable storage.

A saved Skill speeds up the first pass. It cannot decide whether the output is strategically correct, politically safe, legally clean, or ready to publish. Keep that line: automate the repeated work, and gate the external effect.

## Worked example: sort five repeated prompts

List the five prompts you repeat most often in Chrome. Then sort each one with two questions. Does the prompt depend on business facts that the page does not supply? Does its output lead to an external action?

A prompt that only reads the current page and returns text to you can become a Skill. A prompt that depends on business facts, or that leads to an external action, needs a file-backed workflow.

A small agency owner might produce this list:

| Repeated prompt | Depends on business facts? | External effect? | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summarize this article in five bullets | No | No | Save as a Skill |
| Compare these three vendor pages in one table | No | No | Save as a Skill |
| Check this vendor page against our buying criteria | Yes: the criteria | No | Skill plus a maintained criteria file |
| Draft a reply to this client email in our voice | Yes: voice rules and client history | Yes, when sent | File-backed workflow with approval |
| Rewrite this page for our site | Yes: offer rules and claims policy | Yes, when published | File-backed workflow with approval |

The first two rows are safe as Skills, because the page supplies all the context. The third row needs the buying criteria in a maintained file. Attach or paste the current version when you run the command. A copy of the criteria inside the Skill goes stale when the criteria change.

The last two rows touch clients and the public. Keep their context in files, and put an approval step before the send or the publish. The Skill can still start the draft. It does not own the facts or the decision.

Run the sort again after a month. Promote a command to a Skill only after it returns the same useful shape several times. Retire a Skill when its output needs heavy correction on most runs.

## Start with the list

Start with the list of repeated browser tasks. Save the low-risk prompts as Skills. Move business-critical context into a durable memory layer before you let AI act on it. The browser keeps the commands. Your files keep the reason for each command, what it may touch, and what proof it leaves.
