Write down the exact date and the date you checked it. Keep that result separate from the age of the business or its website content. Use the check for a specific operational question: a domain handover, an inventory, or a claim about when a website began. Avoid turning one timestamp into proof of a different event. ## Use a registration-data lookup ICANN describes the Registration Data Access Protocol, or RDAP, as a way to access current domain registration data. It was developed as a replacement for WHOIS. [ICANN's RDAP overview, checked 2026.10.23](https://www.icann.org/en/contracted-parties/registry-operators/resources/registration-data-access-protocol). Start at [ICANN Lookup](https://lookup.icann.org/en). Enter the domain name rather than a complete page address. Review the returned registration information. If the record or required date is unavailable, leave the result unresolved and ask the registrar for clarification. In technical RDAP output, event records use fields including `eventAction` and `eventDate`. RFC 9083 gives examples distinguishing registration from a later change. Keep the original date in your notes before calculating elapsed time. If you report an age in years, state the check date so the calculation has a reference point. ## Record the event that each date supports Use this proposed evidence table to avoid mixing different histories: | Date you want to establish | Source to investigate | Limit to preserve | | --- | --- | --- | | Domain registration | Registration record or registrar information | The date describes that registration record | | Old website appearance | Dated archived capture | The capture documents what was preserved then | | Your ownership period | Your acquisition and account records | Keep it separate from the registration timestamp | | Business operating history | Approved business records | Do not substitute the domain date | | A page's publication | Your CMS, source history, or publication record | Check the specific page and version | Treat this as a recordkeeping framework. If the available source cannot establish the event you need, say what remains unknown. ## Use archives to inspect website history The Wayback Machine allows lookup by URL and date ranges. The Internet Archive notes that some sites are missing or inaccessible to its crawlers. An absent capture therefore leaves a gap in archive evidence. Do not use the earliest capture you find as a confirmed website launch date unless another record supports that claim. Keep recovered content separate from current approved copy. ## Ask what a domain-age claim is supposed to prove When a proposal describes an “aged domain,” ask for the source record and exact event behind that phrase. Then ask which business decision depends on it. If the question concerns reputation or search performance, request evidence about those subjects. A registration timestamp by itself is not a report of website traffic, received inquiries, or current content quality. Avoid accepting a date calculation as the whole website assessment. Store access credentials separately. Ask the person handling the handover to verify that the business has the access required for its intended work.
