# ChatGPT vs Perplexity Memory for Business: Ongoing Context or Cited Research.

A team moves market research to Perplexity because the answers include web citations. Two weeks later, it assumes the client rules, rejected options, and approval history moved too. The next brief cites fresh research and violates an old client boundary.

Research evidence and business memory are different records.

ChatGPT and Perplexity now both provide project, file, and memory features. The buyer still needs to decide which source governs internal facts, which route gathers external evidence, and what survives outside either subscription.

Terminology checked September 19, 2026: Perplexity calls its persistent workspace a **Project**. Older help links retain `spaces` in the URL. The [ChatGPT-to-Perplexity migration procedure](/articles/transfer-chatgpt-history-to-perplexity) uses the same current name and shows the file-ingestion route.

## ChatGPT and Perplexity solve different memory jobs

ChatGPT memory can use saved memories and eligible past chats. Projects can organize chats, files, project instructions, saved responses, and app links. OpenAI documents project-only memory as a way to constrain context to the project. [OpenAI: Memory FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq) [OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521-projects-in-chatgpt)

Perplexity emphasizes sourced research, but its current Projects also organize threads, files, custom instructions, and scoped memories. Its documentation says project memories stay scoped to the project and private to the individual user rather than flowing to global memory or collaborators. [Perplexity: What are Projects?](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352961-what-are-spaces)

The products overlap. The job definition should remain sharper than the product category.

## Conversation memory, Projects, and project context

If a research conversation appears missing, run the [Perplexity history diagnostic](/articles/perplexity-memory-across-conversations-missing-history) before assuming the source trail was deleted.

For ChatGPT, separate saved memory, chat-history reference, and project context. A personal preference useful across conversations should not silently override a project policy. Shared projects use project-only memory, but the team must still maintain project files and instructions.

For Perplexity, separate web research threads, project files, project memory, global memory, and connected sources. The current product also describes Brain for certain Computer plans as a graph of projects, people, files, and corrections with links back to sources. Availability is limited by plan and rollout, so record the tested account. [Perplexity: Brain](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/19700001-what-is-brain)

In either product, a memory feature can summarize an earlier interaction. It does not certify that the interaction contained an approved business decision.

## How the account-level memory behaved in January 2026

An earlier comparison, observed in January 2026, looked only at account-level memory, not Projects. It found two different designs. Keep the date with each claim, because both vendors change these controls.

ChatGPT memory had two parts. Saved memories held details the user asked it to keep, plus details the model chose to store. "I'm vegetarian" becomes a saved memory. A passing mention of a novel set in 1940s Paris may become one too.

Chat history reference drew on past conversations. ChatGPT could reference a conversation from a year earlier and link to the exact thread. It kept a running summary that updated after each chat and entered each new conversation.

The user could turn memory off, turn off saved memories or chat history reference separately, or open a Temporary Chat that saves nothing.

Perplexity announced memory in late 2025. It kept past searches, stated preferences such as favorite brands or dietary needs, and context across threads. Perplexity used memory to rank search results, not to hold discrete facts. A user who searched for infrared sauna studies three times got scientific sources first on a later heat therapy question. Incognito mode turned memory off. Perplexity described memory as retrieved reference context, not training data.

| Feature | ChatGPT memory | Perplexity memory |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Conversation continuity | Search personalization |
| What it keeps | Stated facts and details the model detects | Past searches, preferences, and interests |
| Where it applies | The ChatGPT app; not the API or custom GPTs | Perplexity search; not other assistants |
| User control | View, edit, and delete single memories | Memory setting on or off, plus incognito mode |
| Context supplied | A running summary, estimated at about 1,000 tokens; OpenAI publishes no size | Retrieved context of unpublished size |
| Fit for business records | Limited; no place for SOPs, brand voice, or client files | Low; built for retrieval, not drafting |

An enterprise administrator could also turn ChatGPT memory off for the whole workspace. Both products chose what to keep by automatic detection. Neither account-level memory accepted a structured context file that the owner wrote.

## Web citations versus internal source authority

Perplexity's core research experience makes source links visible. That is helpful for current external claims. A citation still needs evaluation for source quality, date, and direct support.

Internal authority is a different question. A client email can be authentic and still be superseded. A meeting transcript can contain proposals that were rejected. A polished project summary can merge facts with inference.

Use two source classes:

- external research sources, ranked by primary authority and date;
- internal business records, ranked by owner, status, scope, and effective date.

The [persistent context guide](/articles/persistent-context-across-ai-tools) explains how one source layer can serve more than one product without copying every chat.

## What transfers and what must be rebuilt

OpenAI provides data export for eligible accounts. It documents that an upload of exported conversations elsewhere does not recreate the original chat history or migrate all product objects. [OpenAI: Export ChatGPT history](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data)

Perplexity Projects can contain files and threads, with limits and sharing behavior tied to plan. Perplexity also documents asset downloads and exports for generated documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. [Perplexity: Creating assets](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/12528830-creating-assets-with-perplexity-overview)

Do not call either route a handoff until a fresh operator can recover the current decision, correction, task definition, and evidence trail. Keep those objects in owned files. Exported research threads can remain evidence.

The [shutdown dependency test](/articles/what-stops-when-you-stop-paying-for-ai) helps separate retained data from usable operation after billing or access changes.

## Inspect `research-vs-memory-scorecard.csv`

Score one recurring job rather than the whole product.

```csv
criterion,chatgpt,perplexity,pass_evidence
ongoing_preference,test,test,new session applies harmless preference
project_scope,test,test,other project canary absent
web_research,test,test,material claim cites primary source
internal_authority,test,test,current decision beats old thread
correction,test,test,fresh run applies correction
file_access,test,test,receipt names exact file
export,test,test,current source opens outside product
replacement,test,test,fresh model completes same task
decision,pending,pending,choose route per job
```

Keep screenshots and receipts in a dated evidence folder. Product controls and plan packaging can change.

## Privacy, retention, export, and deletion

OpenAI and Perplexity publish plan-specific data controls. Enterprise promises should not be projected onto consumer plans. Consumer controls should not be assumed for managed workspaces.

Test what the account owner can inspect, delete, export, share, and restrict. When connected files remain in another provider, note whether the product stores a copy, index, derived memory, or activity record. Deleting the source may not immediately delete every derived object.

Keep secrets, credentials, regulated records, and live client data out of comparison fixtures. A synthetic canary can prove scope without creating a privacy incident.

## Personal preference versus business record

Personal memory is short. "I'm vegetarian, I live in Austin, I prefer morning workouts" fits in saved memory, and one statement settles it.

Business memory is long and structured. One example set holds a 47-page brand guide and a client list with 200 active projects. It also holds the content production SOPs and 15 frameworks for sales, marketing, and operations. A working business context file often runs past 5,000 words. Saved memory does not hold that volume, and a chat history summary does not keep its structure.

Account-level memory also stays inside one product. The owner cannot export it as a maintained file, compare versions, or share it with a team. A switch to Claude for one task starts from zero.

Match the feature to the job:

| Job | Fitting route |
|---|---|
| Casual personal tasks such as trip plans, recipes, or hobby research | ChatGPT memory |
| Basic preferences kept without setup, all inside the ChatGPT app | ChatGPT memory |
| Research on one topic across several sessions, with citations | Perplexity memory |
| Search results tuned to past queries | Perplexity memory |
| Context that must cross ChatGPT, Claude, and other products | Neither; use an owned file |
| Client work, SOPs, or brand guidelines | Neither; use an owned file |
| Version control, team access, or export | Neither; use an owned file |

The owned file is one Markdown document that any AI product can read. It states who you are, what you do, your frameworks, client details, and SOPs. It lives in local storage such as an Obsidian vault. Claude Code reads a `CLAUDE.md` file at the start of each session. The owner edits the file, versions it with Git, and shares it with the team. The model does not decide what to keep; the owner does.

The file also survives model changes. Claude's standard context window grew from 100,000 to 200,000 tokens in November 2023, and memory features have changed several times since launch. A file in owned storage does not need to change when a product does.

## Use both without duplicating truth

A practical architecture may use Perplexity for external research and ChatGPT for a recurring drafting workspace. Both read the same approved internal packet. Research findings enter a dated evidence file with links. Accepted business decisions enter the decision record after review.

Do not paste full internal memory into every research thread. Give the research route only the context required to form the query and evaluate results. Do not let a web answer overwrite internal policy.

The broader [ChatGPT versus Claude comparison](/articles/chatgpt-vs-claude-memory-business) uses the same rule: choose the product for the job, then keep business authority portable.

## Run the five-query side-by-side test

Use a synthetic project and complete these checks:

1. Ask for a current external fact that has a primary source.
2. Ask for an internal decision present only in the approved file.
3. Add an older conflicting decision to a prior thread.
4. Add a correction that rejects the old wording.
5. Ask for a combined client brief.
6. Confirm external claims cite current primary sources.
7. Confirm internal claims cite approved internal files.
8. Confirm the old decision and other-project canary stay absent.
9. Remove product access and open the exported packet.
10. Run the brief with a fresh model.

Pass means the research and memory roles remain visible. It does not require one product to win every category.

## Buyer decision table

Choose ChatGPT when the tested job benefits from its project workflow, memory controls, and team environment. Choose Perplexity when sourced external research is central and its project controls pass the internal fixture.

Use both when role separation reduces error. Use neither as the sole business record when the job must survive product access, plan changes, or model replacement.

The choice matters less in two cases. If AI does no business-critical work for you, pick the interface you prefer. If a company contract standardizes on one platform, improve memory inside that platform before you switch.

Record the product roles in one decision file. State which route may research the web and which may draft from internal sources. Name where research evidence lands, who promotes a finding into the business record, and when the choice will be retested. Add a rule that external citations cannot silently revise internal policy. This keeps a future operator from treating a well-sourced research answer as permission to change a client decision. Retest after a project, memory, connector, or export change.

Also record the expected no-work result. When no approved internal source exists, the drafting route should report the missing record. When no credible external source supports a requested claim, the research route should report that gap. A useful assistant must finish cleanly when evidence is absent, not fill the space with remembered or plausible text.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The evaluation may use synthetic projects, harmless memories, public web research, test files, and read-only exports.

It stops before it connects live repositories, uploads client archives, or changes organization data controls. It also stops before it shares a project, deletes real history, cancels a plan, or takes an external action. The account owner and data owner approve those changes.

If a research citation conflicts with an approved internal decision, the agent reports the conflict. It does not overwrite the decision or hide the external evidence.

## Questions about ChatGPT vs Perplexity Memory for Business: Ongoing Context or Cited Research?

### Is Perplexity a good replacement for ChatGPT?

Perplexity is oriented toward cited research, while ChatGPT Projects and memory support a different kind of ongoing context. Test the same business job and decide whether it needs web evidence, maintained internal sources, conversation continuity, or a combination.

### Can I transfer my ChatGPT data into Perplexity?

Use the ChatGPT export as source evidence, promote current records into maintained files, then rebuild a Perplexity Space around the material required for the research job. Test the Space with the same recurring query before treating the transfer as complete.

### Which AI tool is better for research, ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Compare them on the same five-query fixture with requirements for citations, internal source use, correction, export, and shutdown. Use the product that meets the job, while keeping accepted decisions and company facts in a separate authoritative record.
