# ChatGPT vs Gemini Memory for Business: Which Context Survives the Next Job.

An owner expects Gemini to remember a pricing exception because it appeared in Gmail. ChatGPT recalls an older preference from past chats. Neither answer points to the approved price file, and the quote is due today.

Both products may provide useful continuity. Neither remembered object becomes business authority merely because it appeared in an answer.

Compare ChatGPT and Gemini with one recurring job and one current fact. Add one superseded fact, one correction, one prohibited source, and one stopping point.

## Product memory is not business authority

OpenAI describes ChatGPT memory through saved memories and reference to chat history, with plan-dependent availability and user controls. Users can inspect, delete, reset, or turn memory off through documented settings. [OpenAI: Memory FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq)

Google documents personalization features, saved information, past-chat memory, Connected Apps, and activity controls in Gemini Apps. Availability depends on account, region, setting, and product rollout. Google's privacy guidance also explains that Gemini data and connected-service data can follow different retention and deletion paths. [Google: Gemini Apps Privacy Hub](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961?hl=en)

These features can make a product feel familiar. A business record does a different job. It identifies current facts, approved decisions, source precedence, correction ownership, and allowed actions.

The distinction is the same one in [ChatGPT versus Claude memory for business](/articles/chatgpt-vs-claude-memory-business): product continuity and owned authority should be tested separately.

## What ChatGPT can remember across work

ChatGPT memory can use saved memories and eligible chat history. Projects add a workspace that can contain chats, files, links, saved responses, and project instructions. OpenAI documents project-only memory as a self-contained mode that limits project context to that project. Shared projects use project-only memory. [OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521-projects-in-chatgpt)

For a business job, distinguish four inputs:

- saved personal memory;
- past conversation context;
- project files and instructions;
- external connected sources.

The task receipt should say which classes were enabled. A correct answer without source evidence does not prove which one controlled the result.

## What Gemini can remember across Google services

Use the [Gemini eligibility and setup procedure](/articles/make-gemini-remember-past-conversations) before testing personal-account past-chat memory.

Gemini can use instructions, memory or personalization features, past Gemini activity, and connected services when the account and settings permit. Connected Apps can let Gemini use information from services such as Gmail, Drive, or Calendar. Google warns that disconnecting an app or deleting data in one service does not necessarily delete corresponding Gemini Apps activity. Changes in a connected source may also take time to affect the Gemini experience. [Google: Gemini Apps Privacy Hub](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961?hl=en)

Google ecosystem access can be valuable for an office already operating in Workspace. It also widens the source question. An email thread, Drive draft, calendar description, and approved policy can disagree.

Do not ask Gemini to resolve that conflict from recency alone. Name the source hierarchy in the job brief.

## Read the January 2026 feature snapshot

A January 2026 comparison recorded how each product remembered. Treat it as dated context for the fixture, and recheck the provider pages before you rely on a row.

ChatGPT kept saved memories and chat-history reference. Saved memories were short statements, such as "I'm vegetarian," a name, a job title, or project details. Since April 2025, chat-history reference could draw on past conversations searchable back about a year. In January 2026, OpenAI upgraded it to link each past chat that an answer used.

ChatGPT held personal details, work context, writing style, and recurring topics. It did not hold files outside the chat where you uploaded them, or code written together across sessions. It also did not hold complex project architecture, decision histories, or anything from Temporary Chat. The Plus plan had a 128,000-token context window, about 300 pages, and memory summaries used part of it. Memory data lived on OpenAI's servers.

On January 14, 2026, Google launched Personal Intelligence as a beta for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US. It worked by connection rather than by notes. Gemini could read Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, and Search history when it answered. A question such as "what's that email from my lawyer last month" found the email. Gemini picked the most relevant emails, images, or documents for each query instead of loading the whole account. Gemini 3 models, released in November 2025, read up to one million tokens of input.

Personal Intelligence held what sat in the connected Google apps, plus personal details and preferences you stated. It did not reach conversations from before you turned it on, data outside Google services, or files stored elsewhere. It did not keep context apart by project or client. Each new chat pulled from Google data again, with no project-level memory carried between sessions. The feature was off by default, you chose which apps to connect, and Google said Gemini did not train directly on Gmail or Photos content.

| Feature | ChatGPT | Gemini with Personal Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| How it remembers | Saved statements plus past-chat reference | Reads connected Google apps for each query |
| Context window | 128,000 tokens, about 300 pages | 1,000,000 tokens, about 2,500 pages |
| Data it can use | What you state or upload | Gmail, Drive, Photos, and Search history |
| Between sessions | Memories carry over; uploaded files do not | Pulls Google data again; no project memory |
| Where data sits | OpenAI servers | Your Google account |
| User control | View, edit, and delete memories; turn memory off | Choose apps to connect; disconnect at any time |
| File handling | Upload per conversation | Reads Drive files directly |
| Price position | About the same entry price as Google's paid plan | About the same entry price as ChatGPT Plus |

ChatGPT suited casual continuity with no setup: it remembered a diet and recalled a conversation from three months earlier. Gemini suited people whose records already lived in Gmail, Drive, and Photos, because it needed no upload. Neither suited an owner who manages several clients or complex projects. Neither memory could be edited as a file, versioned, backed up, or moved to another tool. A `CLAUDE.md` file that Claude Code reads at session start, or the owned packet in the fixture below, fills that gap.

## Scope, controls, deletion, and workspace boundaries

Memory settings are not identical across personal, business, enterprise, education, or managed accounts. Administrators may control features. Consumer activity settings can differ from organization data controls.

Test the account you will buy. Record:

- plan and account identity;
- memory or personalization state;
- project or workspace boundary;
- connected apps;
- allowed source folder;
- deletion and export route;
- evidence date.

Google documents several retention periods and notes that deleting Gemini activity does not delete data retained by connected services. OpenAI documents that deleting a chat does not by itself remove saved memory from that conversation, so full removal may require deleting both. These are product behaviors, not reasons to declare either product universally better.

## Inspect `cross-model-memory-test.md`

Keep the fixture small and harmless.

```text
test_date:: 2026.08.22
job:: draft a pricing-exception review
current_fact:: standard_notice_days=45
superseded_fact:: standard_notice_days=30
decision:: exception requires finance-owner approval
correction:: never call a draft exception approved
prohibited_source:: synthetic-private-email.txt
allowed_sources:: pricing-policy.md, decisions.md, corrections.md
output:: pricing-review.md
must_cite:: exact allowed source for each material claim
stopping_point:: draft only, no email or Drive write
pass:: 45 days, approval named, correction applied, prohibited source absent
```

Use the same files and prompts in both products. If one route cannot isolate the prohibited source, mark the architecture as failed for this job rather than weakening the fixture.

## Which product handles corrections more predictably

Do not infer correction quality from one conversational apology. Test three objects:

1. an incorrect product memory;
2. a chat or activity record containing the old fact;
3. an approved correction file.

Use the documented control to inspect or remove the product memory. Keep the correction file as authority. Start a fresh session and rerun. Record whether the current fact appears, whether the old fact returns, and which evidence the product cites.

The durable pattern in [corrections become system memory](/articles/corrections-become-system-memory) is provider-independent. A correction is accepted only when the next relevant run changes and the test proves it.

## Export and shutdown behavior

OpenAI documents a data export flow for eligible accounts. Its conversation-transfer guidance says an exported history can be uploaded as a record. The upload does not recreate the original chat history or migrate all product objects. [OpenAI: Export ChatGPT history](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data) [OpenAI: Transfer exported conversations](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9106926-transfer-exported-conversations-between-chatgpt-accounts) For a worked ChatGPT archive transfer to another research tool, read [How to Transfer Data From ChatGPT to Perplexity.](/articles/transfer-chatgpt-history-to-perplexity)

Google provides account data export and Gemini activity management routes. A complete test must inspect the archive rather than assume every memory, connector permission, Gem, or workspace object becomes a reusable business packet.

Keep current decisions, corrections, and task contracts in a maintained source outside both products. The [model-switching guide](/articles/switch-ai-models-without-losing-context) shows how a stable packet reduces dependence on product-specific history.

## Choose by ecosystem, then keep the record outside both

ChatGPT may fit a team already using Projects, GPTs, and OpenAI workspace controls. Gemini may fit a team whose approved records and daily work already live in Google Workspace. Ecosystem fit affects friction, identity, and retrieval.

Do not let ecosystem fit erase the source boundary. Email is correspondence. A calendar is scheduling evidence. A Drive folder may contain drafts and approved files. The job brief still decides which record controls.

The practical answer can be two products against one owned packet. Each model may serve different work while current decisions remain portable.

The choice matters less in two cases. If AI does no business-critical work for you, pick the interface you prefer. If a company contract standardizes on one platform, improve memory inside that platform before you switch.

## Run the five-record business test

Complete these checks in a fresh synthetic workspace:

Use a dedicated synthetic Google account with a seeded test mailbox only when the account owner approves that connector test. Never attach live Gmail to this fixture. If no such account is available, record connected-source isolation as `unverified`; a local text-file test cannot establish the Gmail boundary.

1. Add one harmless personalization preference.
2. Add the current and superseded facts.
3. Add the correction and approval decision.
4. Make the prohibited synthetic source visible through the approved test route. Record connected-source isolation as unverified if that route cannot be tested.
5. Run the task in a new ChatGPT context.
6. Run the same task in a new Gemini context.
7. Confirm both cite only allowed sources.
8. Remove or correct the old product memory.
9. Repeat from fresh sessions.
10. Export available data and inspect the archive.
11. Give the owned packet to a replacement model.
12. Record plan, settings, results, and failures.

Choose from the fixture, not a permanent ranking. Product behavior can change after publication.

Save a dated decision after the run. Name the selected product for this job, the approved source folder, disabled sources, account owner, correction owner, export location, and next retest date. If both products remain in use, assign each a job rather than letting staff choose from habit. Reopen the decision after a change to memory, project modes, Connected Apps, workspace policy, or the source system. A short decision record is easier to audit than a collection of screenshots with no conclusion.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The evaluation may use synthetic files, test projects, temporary chats, memory inspection, and read-only exports.

It stops before it connects live Gmail or Drive data, uploads client records, or changes organization memory settings. It also stops before it deletes real history, shares projects, cancels subscriptions, or authorizes external actions. The account owner and data owner approve those changes.

If product documentation and the observed account differ, record the mismatch and stop. Do not claim an untested feature.

## Questions about ChatGPT vs Gemini Memory for Business: Which Context Survives the Next Job?

### Does anyone else have the memory issue with Gemini?

Memory availability and behavior can vary by account, setting, region, and workspace policy, so verify the current controls in the account you will use. For business work, keep authoritative facts and decisions in maintained sources that either product can read.

### Is Gemini's memory really that much better than ChatGPT?

A broad memory claim does not settle which product supports the business job. Compare both with the same current fact, corrected fact, old conflicting chat, connected source, deletion request, export, and replacement test.

### Should I choose ChatGPT's customization or Gemini's ecosystem?

Choose by the authoritative sources the job must use and the controls the business needs. ChatGPT may fit project and conversation workflows, while Gemini may fit Google services, but current business rules should remain outside both products.
