ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro sit at the same price. In January 2026, both entry plans cost the same per month, and both gave access to each vendor's strong general models. They differ in what they are good at. Neither one, used as it comes, gives a business a durable memory of its work. This page compares the two plans on tools, writing, context, and memory. It then gives you a one-week test and a way to keep your business context outside either subscription. ## Compare the plans in relative terms Prices change, so this page does not quote them. Current prices are on each vendor's plan page. Model names change several times a year, so compare by what each plan does, not by the model it lists this month. ## Know what ChatGPT Plus gives you ChatGPT Plus is a multi-tool. One subscription bundles image generation, custom GPTs from the GPT Store, and memory. It also includes data analysis that runs code on spreadsheets, image input, and web search. Its memory saves facts that you state and details that the model judges worth keeping. You can view and delete saved memories. Since April 2025, ChatGPT can also refer to past conversations. In January 2026, OpenAI made that reference more reliable at retrieving specific details. In the January 2026 comparison, it was the strongest consumer memory feature among the major chat products. The limits sit in depth. The context window for standard chats was smaller than Claude's in January 2026. Memory does not carry into the API, and custom GPTs do not use saved memory. The default writing style tends toward generic. ## Know what Claude Pro gives you Claude Pro favors depth over breadth. In the January 2026 comparison, its writing needed fewer edits than ChatGPT's in most cases. Its 200,000-token context window held a full book, a codebase, or a set of research papers for analysis in one session. Artifacts show code, documents, or structured output in a side panel that you can edit. Usage limits run well above the free tier, which matters for long research sessions or coding work. Claude Pro has no image generation and no marketplace like the GPT Store. Projects hold uploaded files, such as PDFs, spreadsheets, and Markdown files, plus custom instructions. Every chat in a Project can use those files. Because you choose the files, a Project gives you more direct control than automatic memory. Claude Pro also includes Claude Code, a command-line agent that reads files on your computer. That inclusion matters most for memory, as the last sections of this page explain. ## Read the feature comparison as a dated snapshot The table reflects January 2026, with two corrections from later product changes noted in the rows. It also fits when you value memory that needs no setup. A week that mixes images, code, research, and writing also favors it, because one tool covers all four. Claude Pro fits when writing quality matters, such as marketing copy, client email, and long-form thought leadership. It fits long documents like books, research papers, and codebases. It also fits when you want context files that the model reads across sessions, and when you prefer a cleaner interface for deep work. On features alone, ChatGPT Plus gives you more tools, and Claude Pro gives you better writing. Both are better than a blank session. Neither gives you business-level memory on its own. ChatGPT memory saves details automatically, and you cannot structure it. You cannot load a 5,000-word brand guide, a client list, and a set of standard operating procedures into it. It was built for personal details such as travel preferences, dietary needs, and hobbies. Claude Projects hold files, which is better. But each Project is separate. With several clients, you run several Projects, and context does not move between them. A file in a Project also stays as uploaded until someone replaces it. The larger problem is that both features keep your memory inside the vendor's product. ChatGPT memory does not work in Claude. Claude Projects do not work in ChatGPT. If you switch, you rebuild. You write it once, and any agent that reads files can use it. Create a `CLAUDE.md` file with your business context: what you do, your frameworks, client details, and voice. Keep it in an Obsidian vault or any folder you back up. Claude Code, included with Claude Pro, reads it at the start of every session. For ChatGPT, attach the same file to a Project or paste it into a chat. The memory then lives in a file that you control. You edit it, version it with Git, share it with your team, and load it into any tool that accepts file context. ChatGPT memory depends on the model's choice of what to save. That is why Claude Pro comes out ahead on memory in this comparison, with one condition. Projects are not the reason. Claude Code is, because it gives a direct path to file-based memory that travels between tools. Without a context file, both plans leave you to rebuild context each time you switch. ## Test both plans in one week A one-week test settles the choice better than a feature list. Use real but non-sensitive tasks. 1. List five tasks you do every week, such as a client email, a proposal section, a document summary, a spreadsheet check, and an image. 2. Write a short context file with your business facts, voice rules, and one sample of your writing. 3. Subscribe to one plan for the first half of the week and the other plan for the second half. 4. Run each task twice in each plan: once without the file and once with it. 5. Count the edits each output needs before you would use it. 6. Note which tasks one plan could not do, such as an image or a long document. 7. On the last day, open a new session in each plan and ask for a task that needs last week's context. Choose the plan that needed fewer edits on the tasks you do most. Keep the context file whichever plan wins. If you need persistent memory that travels across tools, the subscription is the smaller decision.
