# Why ChatGPT Model Set Context Says Nothing Yet, and What to Test Next.

An owner sees “Nothing yet” beside a model context or memory view. They assume ChatGPT has no retained information and paste sensitive business details into a new chat. The next response reflects an older preference from chat history.

One empty label did not describe every context source available to the product.

Treat “Nothing yet” as an observation about that visible field, account state, or interface version. Do not treat it as proof that saved memories, chat-history reference, project conversations, project files, custom instructions, or workspace controls are empty.

A failed recall does not prove data deletion. A successful recall does not prove the fact came from the panel you inspected. First record the visible account state; then use the harmless fixture to test specific retrieval routes.

## What the visible state proves

Record exactly where the phrase appears. Include the account type, workspace, project, interface, browser or app version, date, and screenshot. Product labels can change. An empty panel proves only that the panel showed no entries at that moment. It does not prove how the model assembled the current response. OpenAI's Memory FAQ distinguishes saved memories from reference to chat history. It says chat-history reference can use useful information from past conversations without retaining every detail. Do not reverse engineer a private internal field from its label. Test observable behavior through supported settings and harmless facts.

## Inventory every possible context source

Before changing a setting, list the routes that may shape the answer:

- current chat messages;
- custom instructions;
- saved memories;
- reference to past chat history;
- project instructions;
- project files;
- conversations inside the project;
- connected apps or tools;
- workspace-level settings;
- model knowledge independent of the account.

Not every route applies to every plan. The tested account is the evidence.

OpenAI's Projects documentation says project-only memory excludes previously saved memories and conversations outside the project, while default behavior can vary by plan. This means a project result and a non-project result can differ even when the visible saved-memory list looks the same.

Use one harmless fact that has no business consequence.

Do not use a customer, employee, health, financial, legal, credential, or pricing fact. A synthetic color is enough to test retrieval.

Keep the fixture outside the business source of truth. The goal is to inspect product behavior, not create a new authority.

## Check account, workspace, project, and settings

Confirm which account is active. A personal account and business workspace can have different controls. Record whether the chat is inside a project and whether that project uses default or project-only memory.

Open Settings and inspect the memory controls available to that account. OpenAI documents that disabling reference to saved memories also disables reference to chat history, while saved memory can remain enabled with chat-history reference turned off. Interface wording may vary.

Check project instructions and files. Search the current chat. Look for connected-app results or citations. A response can reflect context that does not appear in the saved-memory list.

Do not toggle workspace-wide settings during diagnosis. Capture the current state first, then test only within the authorized account.

## Add one harmless fact and test a fresh chat

Tell ChatGPT the synthetic color in a normal non-project chat. Use the supported remember request only if that is part of the test. Save the visible confirmation. Start a fresh non-project chat and ask for the color. Record the answer and whether the interface identifies a memory source. Then repeat inside a new project. If project-only memory is available, create a new synthetic project with that setting and repeat.

A failed recall does not prove data deletion. Retrieval is selective. A successful recall does not prove the fact lives in the panel you inspected. Continue with correction and deletion tests.

## Correct the fact and detect stale recall

Change marigold to teal through the same supported route. Start another fresh chat. Ask for the current value and its basis.

Pass requires teal and no unqualified use of marigold. If both appear, record a conflict. Do not repeatedly restate the business equivalent until the model happens to comply.

For live work, put the corrected fact in a maintained source file and require that file to override product memory. The correction test diagnoses the feature. It does not make memory the business record.

## Delete the test through every applicable route

Delete the saved memory through visible controls when it exists. Delete or archive the synthetic source chats according to the test plan. Remove the synthetic project when authorized.

OpenAI says saved memories are separate from chat history. Deleting a chat does not by itself remove a saved memory from that conversation. The FAQ instructs users to delete both the saved memory and the source chat when they want full removal of something ChatGPT remembers.

Start a fresh chat after the documented processing period or account behavior allows. Ask for the synthetic color. Record the result, date, and settings.

Do not test deletion with sensitive data. A harmless canary lets you preserve the receipt without preserving the protected content.

## Run the diagnostic test list

1. Capture the exact Nothing Yet location and account state.
2. Inventory custom instructions, memory, chat history, projects, files, and apps.
3. Add one harmless synthetic fact.
4. Test a fresh non-project chat.
5. Test a default-memory project when available.
6. Test a new project-only project when available.
7. Correct the synthetic fact.
8. Verify the correction from a fresh chat.
9. Delete the saved memory and source chat through supported controls.
10. Retest after the documented or observed processing period.
11. Run the business job from an owned source file with a replacement model.

Optional settings test: only the authorized account owner may change chat-history reference in a disposable test account. Record the prior setting and expected consequences first. Do not toggle a production setting as a diagnostic shortcut.

Pass is not “the label changed.” Pass is an evidence table that shows which supported context routes were present, which fact was recalled, how correction behaved, and whether deletion removed the harmless canary.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The diagnostic may inspect visible settings, create harmless test chats and projects, add a synthetic memory, take screenshots, correct the canary, delete the synthetic fixture, and write a local receipt.

It stops before entering live sensitive data, changing workspace-wide controls, deleting real conversations, disconnecting production apps, changing retention, or treating an undocumented label as an API contract. The account owner approves personal settings. The workspace administrator approves organization settings. The data owner approves any live source.

If the account state remains ambiguous, report the tested observations and keep business authority in maintained files.
