# CCPA deletion requests for real estate website inquiries

Prepare a deletion-request workflow before promising that a website inquiry has been removed. Identify the applicable business, verify the request through an approved process, review exceptions, and obtain evidence from every relevant system owner.

The CCPA establishes a right to request deletion, subject to exceptions. [Current statute, section 1798.105, checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/pdf/20260101_ccpa_statute.pdf#page=4). Primary sources were checked 2026.10.22. This article is a proposed website-operations brief, not legal advice or permission to delete a record.

## Does a real estate website inquiry automatically fall under CCPA?

Applicability requires a legal review of the business, consumer, processing role, and relevant information. The CPPA describes coverage tests and separate obligations for service providers and contractors. [CPPA applicability FAQ, checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/faq.html).

Ask counsel to document the decision before configuring the workflow. Preserve the request while that review occurs rather than letting an unconfirmed classification disappear into an ordinary sales inbox. Use the [CCPA applicability worksheet](/articles/ccpa-applicability-agent-website) for the separate coverage decision.

## Who should own the request workflow?

Name a business privacy owner, backup reviewer, technical contact, and legal escalation route. Give each a defined responsibility in the proposed brief.

Keep the responsible decision-maker separate from someone who can operate a deletion control. A website provider may inspect and execute approved technical work without deciding whether a legal exception applies.

## Where should visitors submit a request?

Publish the channels approved by counsel and keep them consistent with the privacy policy. The current regulations address designated request methods and an exclusively-online exception. [CCPA regulations, section 7020, checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=34).

Ask the provider to test every published channel with synthetic details. Do not assume a general seller form is the designated privacy-request method.

## What if the request reaches a general contact form?

Route it promptly to the privacy owner under an approved intake procedure. Record where and when it arrived.

The regulations address requests made through a different method or with certain deficiencies. [CCPA regulations, section 7020(f), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=35). Ask counsel to approve how staff recognize and handle that case instead of rejecting it automatically as an ordinary inquiry.

## What should the initial private record contain?

Record receipt time, source channel, requested action, responsible reviewer, verification status, response dates, and system owners. Use a private case reference to connect later evidence.

Limit access to the people handling the request. Keep the case out of ordinary marketing selections. Treat the field list as a proposed operational design, subject to the approved privacy and retention procedure.

## When should receipt be acknowledged?

Section 7021(a) requires acknowledgment within ten business days. Describe verification and expected response unless the request has already been granted or denied. [CCPA regulations, section 7021(a), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=35).

Have counsel approve the acknowledgment. Ask the system owner to demonstrate the reminder and escalation process without sending a real consumer message during testing.

## What substantive response deadline should the workflow track?

The regulations specify “45 calendar days” from receipt. Verification time does not restart that clock. A further extension requires notice and an explanation under the stated conditions. [CCPA regulations, section 7021(b), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=35).

Have counsel approve deadline calculations and extension handling. Keep both the original receipt and any approved extension in the private case.

## How should identity verification be chosen?

Use a procedure approved for the request and risk. The Attorney General explains that businesses verify deletion requests and restrict information collected for verification to that purpose. [Attorney General deletion FAQ, checked 2026.10.22](https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa).

Ask the reviewer which existing information can support the check. Avoid adding an identity-document upload to the public form without review of necessity, security, and handling.

## What if verification cannot be completed?

Keep verification failure distinct from completed deletion. The regulations permit denial when identity cannot be verified and require telling the requester. [CCPA regulations, section 7022(a), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=35).

Ask counsel to approve the response and supporting record. Do not expose another person's stored information while explaining why a match could not be confirmed.

## How should requests through a representative be handled?

Send them to the reviewer-approved authorization procedure. The Attorney General describes permission and identity checks for a representative making a deletion request. [Attorney General representative-request FAQ, checked 2026.10.22](https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa).

Record the review result rather than assuming a matching surname establishes authority. Keep any submitted evidence in the approved private case location, outside the public website and routine build brief.

## Which systems should the technical inventory cover?

Start with the website form store and follow the inquiry's confirmed path. As a proposed inventory, inspect the receiving inbox, contact system, booking tool, exports, and connected service providers.

For each location, record the owner, matching method, approved action, result, and unresolved copies. Ask people to confirm actual processing rather than assume the visible contact record is complete.

## Should the request delete transaction documents automatically?

Keep transaction documents out of automatic deletion pending the responsible professional's review. The statute includes exceptions, including specified transaction and legal-obligation circumstances. [Current statute, section 1798.105(d), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/pdf/20260101_ccpa_statute.pdf#page=5).

Ask counsel to identify the affected record and applicable reason. Avoid using a broad category label as permission to retain every copy for every purpose.

## How should an exception be recorded?

Ask the reviewer to identify the material, legal basis, permitted retained use, and approved disposition. Keep that decision attached to its source.

The statute's exceptions concern information needed for specified purposes. [Current statute, section 1798.105(d), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/pdf/20260101_ccpa_statute.pdf#page=5). The proposed case record should distinguish the retained portion from information approved for deletion.

## What should service providers receive?

Give each provider a reviewed instruction identifying the relevant records and requested action. The statute addresses notifying service providers, contractors, and certain third parties. [Current statute, section 1798.105(c), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/pdf/20260101_ccpa_statute.pdf#page=4).

Track delivery and the provider's response separately. Keep an unanswered instruction unresolved, with an owner and follow-up date. Avoid describing dispatch alone as completed deletion.

## How should a provider's technical limits be handled?

Ask for the documented capability and a written explanation of the unresolved portion. Give that evidence to counsel before determining the response.

Separate a product limitation, an access problem, and a claimed legal exception. The proposed workflow should preserve which one occurred so later reviewers can assess the actual obstacle and next action.

## What about archived or backup copies?

Have counsel approve backup handling before making a promise about all copies. The regulations address delayed compliance for archived or backup data until specified restoration, access, or use. [CCPA regulations, section 7022(d), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=37).

Ask the maintainer for the actual restoration procedure. Test the approved handling with synthetic records, and keep its result separate from active-system deletion.

## Does deleting a contact establish that marketing has stopped?

Verify the approved restriction behavior separately. Ask the technical owner what happens if an older export or integration presents the same contact again.

Use a synthetic reimport case in an isolated environment. Require the result to match counsel's approved handling of request records and contact restrictions. Do not preserve a marketing profile merely to make this test easier.

## What evidence should completed actions produce?

Request a dated result from each system owner that names the inspected store, relevant private reference, approved action, and outcome. Retain only the evidence permitted by the reviewed procedure.

Distinguish completed work from scheduled expiry, pending vendor work, and inaccessible storage. Keep unresolved actions visible to the privacy owner before any completion statement is approved.

## What should the consumer response explain?

Use counsel-approved wording that accurately reports the result and any reviewed exception. The regulations address completion statements and explanations for partial or full denial. [CCPA regulations, section 7022(e)-(f), checked 2026.10.22](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/ccpa_statute_eff_20260101.pdf#page=37).

Have the privacy owner reconcile that response with the collected evidence. Do not claim that every copy was removed when vendor or archive work remains unresolved.

## What should the prelaunch test include?

Use synthetic records to test intake, acknowledgment reminders, verification outcomes, approved exceptions, provider instructions, deadline escalation, and completion evidence. Write the expected result before each case.

Include a failed provider response and an absent reviewer. These are proposed tests of the workflow. They do not establish legal compliance or authorize changing real buyer or seller records.

## How does this differ from routine inquiry retention?

A rights request needs its own reviewed handling and response. Routine expiry follows the approved retention schedule for each record class.

Use the [website-inquiry retention guide](/articles/website-lead-retention-schedule-agent) for that separate decision. Keep its general schedule from replacing the request-specific review. Preserve the relationship between the workflows in the technical handoff.

## What should the website handoff contain?

Provide approved request channels, responsibility assignments, verification instructions, deadline handling, exception review, system inventory, vendor procedures, and test results. Keep private request records in their approved storage.

Assign an owner to review future changes in forms, processing, vendors, and law. Leave implementation and real deletion behind the business's authorized review process.

Bring the approved requirements and open questions to the [real estate website brief](/for/real-estate). Request the agreed work through the [written website scope](/work).
