Start with current business facts, an owner-controlled account, and a useful destination on your website. This is a listing selection and maintenance worksheet. It does not rank directories, promise SEO gains, or treat registration in a government database as a marketing endorsement. ## Separate company research from customer discovery Canada's government directory page links to business registries, federal corporation search, and importer information. Those tools serve different company-research tasks. Do not use a corporation search result as proof that your service listing appears in a local search product. Keep legal-entity research and customer-facing profile checks as separate tasks. For marketing, write down where your intended customer would encounter the listing and what the customer can do there. A directory should earn its place in your maintenance list. ## Review a proposed listing before creating an account Use this comparison sheet: | Check | Evidence to save | | --- | --- | | Relevant audience | Actual category and geographic coverage | | Business identity | Correct public name and approved contact details | | Editing control | Account holder and published correction process | | Website destination | Correct service or contact URL | | Commercial terms | Current listing terms and any recurring commitment | | Maintenance owner | Person responsible for checking changes | As one Canadian example, Yellow Pages' own business site links to a free-listing route and describes its marketing services. Read the actual signup terms before accepting anything. Do not assume every additional service is included in the initial listing. ## Prepare one approved business fact sheet Have the owner confirm the public name, contact number, website URL, customer-facing hours, and the places served. Keep a private account register separate from the public fact sheet. For a service business, distinguish a visitable office from an area where work is performed. Do not submit a residential address by default merely because a form has an address field. Google's representation guidance sets requirements for its own business profiles. Check that source separately when working on Google rather than assuming another directory's rules apply. Record each platform's current correction route instead of applying one set of instructions everywhere. ## Link to a page that answers the next question For a specialist service listing, consider the relevant service page as the destination. Keep a clear route from that page to a real inquiry destination. Use the [search intent guide](/articles/search-intent-explained) to review what that visitor needs. Avoid a destination that requires another search just to find the service named in the directory. Check the published link after any listing change. Ask the office to test the contact route using your own details. ## Keep a dated correction record Record the published profile URL, last checked date, discrepancy, requested fix, and observed result.
