# Shape what Google shows for your company name with profiles, panels, and owned pages.

A prospect searches your company name before a sales call. The first page shows your homepage, a Facebook page nobody has updated since 2022, a competitor's ad, and a two-year-old complaint thread. The knowledge panel lists your old address. The prospect forms an opinion before anyone speaks.

The brand search results page is what people see when they search your company name. Customers, candidates, investors, and partners all form a first impression there. They expect your website, your social profiles, recent news, and accurate facts. What they get depends on how Google reads your digital footprint. Unmanaged results show stale content, negative reviews, competitor ads, dormant profiles, and a thin knowledge panel.

You never fully control this page. Google chooses which pages, profiles, sitelinks, reviews, and media appear. You can influence the choice. Verify profiles, claim the knowledge panel, publish authoritative pages, and manage reviews. A well-managed brand result page can hold 8 to 10 of the 10 organic positions with owned and earned content. That leaves little room for detractors.

## Know the parts of a brand results page

A brand results page usually holds eight kinds of element:

| Element | What it is | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Owned pages | Homepage, about page, product or service pages, usually positions 1 to 3 | Your site structure and content |
| Knowledge panel | A summary with logo, description, social links, reviews, contact details, and related entities | Google's entity data; appears for brands with enough information |
| Sitelinks | Extra links under the homepage result, such as about, products, contact, careers, and blog | Google's automated selection, guided by site structure |
| Social profiles | LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, often positions 4 to 8 | Profile completeness and activity |
| Review platforms | Glassdoor, G2, Capterra, Yelp, Google Business Profile, Trustpilot | Review volume and recency |
| News | Recent press and industry coverage | PR activity |
| Third-party pages | Wikipedia, Crunchbase, directories, partner pages | Your notability and listings |
| Paid ads | Your brand ads and competitor ads that bid on your name | Ad auctions |

### Score your current page

Search your exact brand name in a private window and answer seven questions:

- Do you control 7 or more of the top 10 organic results?
- Are the address, phone, and description correct on every visible property?
- Do logos, images, and colors look the same across results?
- Were the visible pages updated recently?
- Do positive reviews, awards, and press outweigh negative content?
- Do competitor ads or competitor mentions appear?
- Would a first-time visitor see an established, trustworthy company?

## Optimize your social profiles

### Rank the platforms by priority

Social platforms do not rank equally for brand queries. Work in this order:

- **Tier 1, usually ranks:** the LinkedIn company page (often positions 2 to 4), X, and the Facebook business page.
- **Tier 2, often ranks:** Instagram, especially for consumer brands; the YouTube channel, which can also appear in the knowledge panel; and Crunchbase for funded startups and technology companies.
- **Tier 3, ranks when you are active there:** Pinterest, TikTok, and Medium; GitHub for developer tools and open-source projects; and Wellfound, formerly AngelList, for startups that are hiring or raising funds.

Complete Tier 1 profiles before you spend effort on Tier 3. Create profiles only where your audience is active and you can keep posting. A dormant profile hurts more than no profile.

### Complete every profile

Each profile needs six things:

- the exact brand name in the name field, not a stylized version or a tagline;
- the same logo as the profile image, at the platform's recommended size;
- a description that matches your website; the first 160 characters often appear in search snippets;
- a link to your homepage or a campaign landing page;
- email, phone, and location where the platform supports them;
- verified status where the platform offers it.

Complete profiles tend to rank above incomplete ones. A LinkedIn page with a logo, description, website, and location usually outranks a page with only a logo and a name.

### Keep profiles active

Active profiles tend to hold their positions. An account that posts every week tends to outrank an identical account that has been silent for 6 months. Use these minimums as a guide:

- LinkedIn: 2 to 4 company posts a month;
- X: 3 to 5 posts a week;
- Facebook: 2 to 4 posts a month;
- Instagram: 2 to 3 posts a week for consumer brands.

You do not need viral posts. Blog shares, company updates, and short comments on industry news keep a profile fresh. [Social media SEO synergy](/articles/social-media-seo-synergy) covers how to plan that content.

### Claim clean URLs and link everything together

Claim a custom URL on each platform, such as `linkedin.com/company/yourbrand` instead of a numeric ID, and `x.com/yourbrand`, `facebook.com/yourbrand`, and `instagram.com/yourbrand`. Clean URLs are easier to recognize and earn more trust than `linkedin.com/company/acme-corporation-inc-17382940`.

Link the properties to each other. Put links to every major profile in the website footer. Link each profile back to the website. Use the LinkedIn About section to link other platforms. Consistent, connected properties help Google connect them to one entity. [Entity SEO and the Knowledge Graph](/articles/entity-seo-knowledge-graph) explains the mechanism.

## Claim and improve the knowledge panel

### Claim the panel

A local business manages its local panel through Google Business Profile. Any organization that already has a knowledge panel can claim it with the "Claim this knowledge panel" link. Google then verifies that you represent the entity through an official site or profile.

If no panel appears yet, build the entity:

1. Establish presence on sources Google reads, such as Wikidata, Crunchbase, and LinkedIn, and Wikipedia if the company qualifies.
2. Add Schema.org `Organization` markup to your website. [The structured data implementation guide](/articles/structured-data-implementation) shows the fields.
3. Earn mentions on authoritative sites with a consistent name, address, and phone number.
4. When a panel appears, use "Suggest an edit" to correct it.

Google decides algorithmically which entities get a panel. Brands with enough search volume, authoritative third-party mentions, and a clear entity definition usually qualify. You cannot pay for a panel or for specific panel content.

### Fill the panel fields

- **Logo.** Use a high-resolution square logo. Google's logo markup guideline requires at least 112 by 112 pixels; larger files look better.
- **Description.** Write a clear summary of what the company does in about 150 to 200 characters.
- **Social profiles.** Link active, complete profiles. The panel shows several of them.
- **Contact details.** Keep the phone, email, and address the same as on your website. Mismatches reduce trust.
- **Entity facts.** Fill founding date, founders, and CEO where the panel allows.
- **Images.** Add strong photos of the office, team, and products.

### Watch what the panel shows

The panel can show aggregated reviews from Google and third-party platforms, so a pattern of bad reviews weakens it. The "People also search for" row shows related entities, often competitors, and reveals how Google categorizes you. A news section reflects recent press. Some SaaS and e-commerce panels show action buttons drawn from site data.

## Build owned pages for branded queries

### Target the brand modifiers

People add words to brand searches: "Acme CRM pricing," "Acme CRM demo," "Acme CRM reviews." Give each common modifier a page:

| Page | Queries it should win |
|---|---|
| Homepage | Exact brand name |
| About | "about [brand]," "[brand] company," "what is [brand]" |
| Contact | "[brand] contact," "[brand] support," "[brand] phone number" |
| Careers | "[brand] careers," "[brand] jobs," "work at [brand]" |
| Blog or news | "[brand] blog," "[brand] news" |
| Customer stories | "[brand] reviews," "[brand] case studies," "[brand] customers" |

Secondary owned properties add more positions. A help center at `help.example.com` or `docs.example.com` ranks for support queries. A community forum at `community.example.com` ranks for "[brand] forum." Each property pushes third-party and negative content further down.

### Influence sitelinks

Google selects sitelinks automatically, and you cannot pick them. You can influence them with a clear navigation hierarchy. Link from the homepage and main menu to the pages you want. Use descriptive anchor text such as "Product features" instead of "Learn more."

## Handle negative content

### Outrank what you cannot remove

You cannot remove most negative content from Google. Legal exceptions exist, covered below. You can outrank it:

1. **Find it.** Search your brand name every month and record negative articles, reviews, and threads on page 1.
2. **Publish competing content.** Create optimized pages, press releases, social content, and earned coverage on the same topics.
3. **Build authority.** Earn backlinks to the positive pages through outreach, PR, and content marketing.
4. **Track movement.** Watch whether a negative page moves from position 7 on page 1 to position 11 on page 2. Every lost position cuts its visibility.

Suppression of one or two low-authority pages takes about 2 to 4 months. Systematic damage from high-authority pages can take 6 to 18 months and may need a professional online reputation management firm.

### Manage reviews

Respond to negative reviews on Glassdoor, G2, Trustpilot, and Google Business Profile in a professional tone. Acknowledge the problem and offer a fix. The public reply shows your service standard.

Ask satisfied customers for reviews. Three negative reviews among 50 with a 4.5 average read as outliers, not a pattern. Complete each platform profile with a logo, description, and company responses.

Never buy reviews. Platforms detect manipulation, and the penalty does more damage than honest criticism.

### Know the legal removal routes

Four routes exist, and each needs legal advice before you act:

- **Defamation.** A provably false statement that causes material harm. It needs legal action and usually a court order.
- **Copyright.** Unauthorized use of your images or text. Send a DMCA takedown notice to Google.
- **Right to erasure.** EU residents can ask for removal of outdated personal information under the GDPR. It applies to individuals and is complex for companies.
- **Google policy violations.** Doxxing, non-consensual intimate images, and financial scams can be reported to Google.

Most negative but truthful content does not qualify.

## Monitor the page every month

### Run a six-step audit

1. Search the exact brand name in a private window and save a screenshot.
2. Record positions 1 to 10 and the knowledge panel, and note changes from last month.
3. Find new third-party content: reviews, articles, and mentions.
4. Check each social profile for recent activity.
5. Check the knowledge panel for errors, and submit corrections.
6. Judge the whole page: is it professional, accurate, and positive?

### Study competitor brand pages

Search each competitor's name. Note which social platforms rank for them and how they use sitelinks. Note which review sites and media appear, how complete their panels are, and what negative content they carry. Apply what you learn. If competitors rank with YouTube channels, move YouTube up your list.

### Automate alerts

Google Alerts sends a free email when Google indexes a new mention. Brand24, Mention, and Awario cover web, social, and news mentions more completely for a monthly fee. Semrush Brand Monitoring and Ahrefs Alerts track new backlinks and mentions. Search Console tracks branded impressions and clicks and shows new branded query variations.

## Connect the brand page to your wider SEO plan

### Treat the brand page as the last step before a visit

People who search your name are high-intent prospects. Use the page to move them forward. Write meta descriptions on owned pages that state the value and the next step. Point sitelinks at pricing, demo, and trial pages through your navigation. Link social profiles to campaign landing pages. Let review ratings build trust.

### Split the effort

Brand results need modest ongoing effort but protect high-value traffic. A balanced plan puts 70 to 80 percent of SEO effort into non-branded content that builds awareness. The other 20 to 30 percent goes into brand results that convert aware prospects. [Brand search lift](/articles/brand-search-lift-seo) shows how the two connect.

### Coordinate with paid brand ads

Consider pausing branded ads when organic results hold 80 percent or more of page 1 and the panel offers conversion paths. Keep branded ads when competitors bid on your name, when negative content ranks high, or when organic click-through falls below 60 percent. Use ad copy to control the message during a launch, a promotion, or a crisis. Falling branded ad click-through, or rising cost per click, signals weaker organic presence or stronger competitor pressure.

When a competitor uses your trademarked name in ad text, file a trademark complaint with Google. Competitor bids on your brand keywords are generally allowed; using your trademark in the ad text often is not, depending on the region. Bid on your own brand terms to hold the top ad position, and strengthen organic results to take most clicks.

## Assign the work

| Team | Responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Marketing | Ask customers for reviews on Google, G2, and Trustpilot; keep social posting consistent; monitor mentions and media; respond to reviews and negative content |
| SEO | Optimize owned pages for branded variations; build links to owned properties; add structured data; track positions and competitor presence |
| Executives and communications | Handle crises that reach the brand page, such as recalls, lawsuits, and leadership changes; approve knowledge panel facts; support PR that earns positive coverage |
| Legal and compliance | Assess removal options for defamatory or policy-violating content; enforce trademark rules in ads; review GDPR requests |

Wikipedia is the one property you should not build yourself. It requires notability through significant independent coverage in reliable sources, and most early-stage companies do not qualify. Build press coverage and industry recognition first. Editors may then create a page, or you can propose one under Wikipedia's rules while you declare your conflict of interest. [SEO for social media managers](/articles/seo-for-social-media-managers) covers the social side of this work in more depth.
