Google's Maps help page says reviews are public and that users cannot add an anonymous review. It lists public information associated with reviews, including the name on the contributor's About me page. For a business owner, the useful next step is clear request wording and a private contact route for customers who need it. ## Distinguish an unfamiliar name from anonymity A displayed contributor name you do not recognize is an observation. It does not establish the person's legal identity or prove they never used your business. Do not publish a guessed customer identity in a reply. Ask an authorized staff member to investigate a service issue through the normal private process. Keep private records out of the public review thread. Use the review's actual text when deciding whether a response is useful. Leave unsupported conclusions out. ## Explain visibility before requesting feedback Keep the request voluntary. Describe the destination as a public Google review rather than an anonymous survey. Link Google's own review guidance when a customer asks what will be visible. A proposed response to a privacy question is: > Google reviews are public. Please check Google's review and profile guidance before posting. You can contact our business privately if you would like help with an issue. Add your actual support destination after checking it. This example makes no promise about confidentiality, retention, or a particular outcome from that contact. ## Provide a separate support route A website can offer a clearly labeled contact path for service problems. Decide who receives those messages, what information is needed, and how the office follows up. Avoid collecting unnecessary sensitive details in the initial form. Use the minimum information the responsible staff member needs to arrange the next step. State the actual business contact process rather than inventing a privacy assurance. Keep the public review link available without screening people by expected rating. Google prohibits selective requests for positive reviews. Compare the review with the applicable policy and record the exact concern. Google says only reviews violating its policies are eligible for removal. Its guidance advises against reporting a review merely because the business dislikes or disagrees with it. If there is a relevant violation, use the documented reporting route and retain the reference. Keep the evidence separate from any proposed public reply. Do not promise removal before Google decides. Remove an anonymity claim that the destination does not support. Ensure the labels distinguish public feedback from contacting the business. Arrange a marked test for the private contact route. Confirm that it reaches the intended person with the agreed fields. Do not submit a fabricated public review to test the website.
