# Decide whether AMP still earns its maintenance cost on your site.

Your site still serves an AMP version of every article. The AMP templates break each time the design team ships a change. A developer fixes the same bug twice, once in the canonical template and once in the AMP template. Nobody on the team remembers what search benefit the AMP pages still bring.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is in an odd state. The project still exists, but it brings no search advantage to most sites, and modern techniques match its speed. Google removed the AMP requirement for the Top Stories carousel in June 2021. From then on, page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, applied to all pages. The AMP badge in search results disappeared at the same time. AMP still lives in production systems, legacy codebases, and content management system defaults, where it adds maintenance cost without a matching SEO return.

For almost every new project, the answer is not to build AMP. Efficient JavaScript, CDN delivery, responsive images, and edge rendering reach the same speed without AMP's constraints. A few contexts still justify it: very large news publishers, rigid platforms, and teams with a deep AMP investment. This assessment covers AMP's history, its current state, the alternatives, a migration path, and the narrow cases where AMP still makes sense.

## Understand why AMP existed

### The 2016 problem

Google launched AMP in 2016 to address real mobile web problems:

- **Heavy mobile pages.** Average mobile page weight passed 2 MB. Third-party scripts, autoplay video, large JavaScript frameworks, tracking pixels, and ad networks pushed load times past 10 seconds on 3G connections.
- **Publisher revenue pressure.** Mobile traffic grew fast, but mobile ad rates lagged desktop. Publishers added more ads, which made pages worse.
- **Platform competition.** Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News offered fast reading inside closed platforms. That threatened traffic to the open web and to Google Search.

AMP offered a technical answer: a restricted HTML subset, aggressive caching, preloading, and strict performance limits that aimed for page renders under one second.

### How AMP worked

AMP had four parts:

- **AMP HTML.** Custom components replaced standard tags: `<amp-img>` for `<img>` and `<amp-video>` for `<video>`. The components enforced mandatory dimensions, lazy loading, and no layout shift.
- **AMP JavaScript.** Custom JavaScript was not allowed. All interaction came from approved AMP components. That removed the main performance problem, unoptimized third-party scripts, but it also removed flexibility.
- **AMP Cache.** Google served AMP pages from its own CDN, pre-rendered and cached. Pages loaded almost at once because the content sat on Google infrastructure.
- **Validation.** The AMP validator enforced strict rules. An invalid page lost cache eligibility and search features. The validator worked as a quality gate against performance regression.

### Why publishers adopted it

Google tied three search features to AMP:

- **The Top Stories carousel.** Only AMP pages qualified for the mobile news carousel above organic results. It drove large traffic to participating publishers.
- **The lightning bolt badge.** An icon marked AMP results, and users chose fast pages.
- **Preloading.** Google preloaded AMP pages from the results page, so a click felt instant.

Those features drove adoption in spite of AMP's constraints and overhead.

## Know what changed in 2021

### Page experience replaced the AMP advantage

Google's page experience update, which rolled out from June 2021, changed AMP's value. Core Web Vitals became the performance standard for all pages, AMP or not. The original metrics were Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). In March 2024, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced FID as the responsiveness metric.

Three changes followed. Non-AMP pages became eligible for the Top Stories carousel. The AMP badge disappeared. Google stated that AMP was not required for Top Stories and that page experience applied to all pages equally.

### Why Google dropped the special treatment

Four pressures ended AMP's advantage:

- **The original problem eased.** Awareness of mobile performance grew, and Chrome's performance tools matured. The crisis that justified AMP faded.
- **Antitrust complaints.** Critics and a 2020 US state antitrust lawsuit alleged that Google used AMP to favor its own infrastructure and ad business.
- **Developer opposition.** Many web developers objected to AMP's constraints, its custom components, and Google's control over rendering. Large publishers invested in non-AMP performance work to escape those limits.
- **Better alternatives.** Modern frameworks, CDN edge computing, responsive image standards, and browser performance APIs reached AMP-level speed without its restrictions.

## Assess AMP's current state

### Adoption

Few sites launch new AMP versions. Developers default to optimized responsive HTML instead of a second codebase. Publishers with large AMP investments often keep AMP for existing content but do not build new features in it. Modern WordPress themes can meet Core Web Vitals without the AMP plugin. Google Search still serves cached AMP pages where they exist but does not rank them higher, and Google News supports AMP without requiring it.

### Maintenance cost

AMP adds four kinds of engineering cost:

- **Two codebases.** A site with canonical and AMP versions must keep features equal, fix bugs twice, and test in two environments.
- **A slower component library.** AMP component work slowed after 2021. New platform features such as the View Transitions API, container queries, and cascade layers are not available inside AMP.
- **Dependency risk.** AMP's future depends on continued investment by its maintainers. If support ends, you face a forced migration on someone else's schedule.
- **Hard debugging.** AMP validation errors are cryptic. Analytics, advertising, and paywall integrations need AMP-specific versions that differ from standard JavaScript.

### Performance compared

Modern non-AMP pages often match or beat AMP:

- **Optimized responsive HTML** with efficient assets, CDN caching, code splitting, and lazy loading reaches LCP under 2.5 seconds, Google's "good" threshold.
- **Edge rendering** through Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute, or Netlify Edge Functions serves HTML from locations near the user and matches AMP Cache latency.
- **Modern image formats** such as WebP and AVIF, with `srcset`, `sizes`, and `<picture>`, cut image payload well below JPEG and remove AMP's image advantage.

On a well-optimized site, the remaining speed difference is small. Measure it on your own templates before you decide.

## Keep AMP only in these cases

### High-volume news publishers

Three conditions can justify AMP for a large publisher:

- **Scale.** A publisher with more than 100 million monthly pageviews spreads AMP maintenance across a huge audience. A small speed and click-through gain can then repay the engineering cost.
- **Inertia.** A team that has run AMP for more than 5 years has knowledge, tools, and workflows built around it. Migration can cost more than it returns.
- **Ad performance.** AMP's ad components, such as `<amp-ad>` and `<amp-sticky-ad>`, work with major ad networks and limit runaway third-party scripts. A publisher whose ad stack runs measurably faster inside AMP has a real reason to stay.

### Platform constraints

Some enterprises run legacy platforms such as Adobe Experience Manager, Sitecore, or a proprietary system. If Core Web Vitals work would need an expensive rebuild, keeping AMP can be the cheaper option for now. Small teams without front-end performance skills may also prefer AMP's fixed rules to learning modern performance methods.

### Email

AMP for Email is separate from AMP for the web. It enables interactive elements in email clients that support it, such as Gmail: carousels, accordions, and forms. Publishers that use interactive email for subscribers can still find it useful, whatever happens to web AMP.

## Migrate AMP pages to optimized HTML

### Assess before you move

1. **Measure AMP's traffic share.** If AMP pages get less than 5 percent of organic traffic, migration risk is low. If they get 20 percent or more, fix canonical performance first.
2. **Set a performance baseline.** Record Core Web Vitals for the AMP pages. The canonical pages must match or beat them.
3. **Map the URL pattern.** Most AMP URLs sit on a subdomain (`amp.example.com`) or a path (`example.com/amp/article`). Each pattern needs its own redirect rule.

### Follow five migration steps

1. **Optimize the canonical pages first.** Reach the "good" thresholds on the non-AMP pages: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. [Page speed optimization for developers](/articles/page-speed-optimization-developers) covers the techniques.
2. **Add 301 redirects.** Redirect each AMP URL to its canonical page. Keep tracking parameters. Avoid chains; [redirect chains and 301s for developers](/articles/redirect-chains-301-developers) explains why.
3. **Remove AMP references.** Delete the `<link rel="amphtml">` tags from canonical pages and remove the AMP scripts. This tells Google the AMP versions are gone.
4. **Watch Search Console.** Look for coverage errors, crawl anomalies, and ranking changes. Google usually processes the change within 2 to 4 weeks.
5. **Delete the AMP codebase.** After traffic moves and rankings hold, remove the AMP templates, components, and build tools from the repository.

### Reduce the risk

- **Migrate in phases.** Move low-traffic sections first. Watch results for 30 days before you move high-traffic sections.
- **Protect mobile performance.** A common failure is a canonical page that slows down on mobile. Hold strict limits; [performance budgets for SEO](/articles/performance-budgets-seo) shows how to set them.
- **Tell stakeholders.** AMP traffic will move to canonical URLs. Update any dashboard that splits AMP from non-AMP traffic.

## Replace AMP with modern techniques

### Frameworks

React Server Components, as used in the Next.js App Router, render on the server and send HTML with a small JavaScript payload. Astro, Qwik, and Fresh send zero or near-zero JavaScript by default through partial hydration, resumability, or island architecture. Svelte compiles to small JavaScript with no large framework runtime.

### CDN and edge computing

Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute, and Netlify Edge Functions run server logic at CDN edge nodes near the user. That reproduces the AMP Cache latency advantage without Google infrastructure. Edge Side Includes (ESI) let a CDN assemble pages from cached fragments, so you can personalize without losing cache hits. [Edge SEO with CDN workers](/articles/edge-seo-cdn-workers) covers what else the edge can do.

### Images and assets

- **Responsive images.** `<img srcset sizes>` and `<picture>` serve the right size for each viewport and pixel density.
- **Modern formats.** WebP and AVIF have broad support in current browsers. Serve them with a JPEG fallback, and check caniuse.com for current support figures.
- **Lazy loading.** Native `loading="lazy"` defers offscreen images without JavaScript. The Intersection Observer API gives finer control.

### CSS and JavaScript delivery

Inline the critical CSS for above-the-fold content in `<head>` and defer the rest. Split JavaScript by route, so a visitor who moves from the homepage to a product page does not download homepage code. Let webpack, Rollup, or Vite remove unused code through tree shaking.

### Preloading and prefetching

Use `<link rel="preload">` to fetch critical fonts, hero images, and key scripts early. Use `<link rel="prefetch">` to load likely next-page resources; an e-commerce site can prefetch product images on hover. The Speculation Rules API, supported in Chromium browsers, declares prefetch and prerender rules with control over resource use.

## Apply the decision rules

Choose non-AMP in four situations:

- **New projects.** Default to optimized responsive HTML unless a specific constraint forces AMP.
- **Small to medium traffic.** Below about 10 million monthly pageviews, AMP maintenance does not pay back.
- **Complex interaction.** Custom JavaScript, third-party integrations, and dynamic interfaces do not fit AMP.
- **A modern stack.** Teams on Next.js, Nuxt, or SvelteKit reach better performance through the framework than through AMP.

Consider AMP in four situations:

- **A large existing investment.** You have run AMP for more than 5 years, traffic passes 100 million monthly pageviews, and migration costs more than it returns.
- **Ad-heavy publishing.** Ads are your main revenue, and AMP's ad components measurably beat your canonical setup.
- **Platform limits.** Your platform makes Core Web Vitals work far more expensive than keeping AMP.
- **Email interaction.** You use AMP for Email for dynamic content in supporting email clients.

## Plan for the decline of AMP

AMP still works for existing sites, and its pages load fast. It no longer brings a ranking benefit or a visible search difference. A new AMP build in place of fast canonical pages is hard to defend.

Expect a slow decline as publishers migrate away and the component library stalls. No retirement date is announced.

Do not plan for a return to AMP preference. Google moved to format-neutral page experience signals in 2021. Put your effort into Core Web Vitals, modern frameworks, edge delivery, and performance budgets. Those skills transfer across projects. [The Core Web Vitals developer guide](/articles/core-web-vitals-developer-guide) is the place to start.

One last detail matters for migration. A valid AMP page must use the full AMP framework, so you cannot keep `<amp-img>` on a normal page and stay valid. For component-level speed without AMP, native lazy loading and responsive image syntax do the same job.
