The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Recover the existing work before asking the assistant to perform it again. Use this proposed diagnostic method for a real estate website assistant or another application you control. It does not claim a universal repair for every chat product. Primary documentation was checked on 2026.10.22. ## Separate the answer stream from the saved conversation The cited API documentation separates conversation state from individual model requests. It describes a conversation object with a durable identifier. A response identifier refers to a generated response. Keep those concepts separate when investigating a reconnect. Before retrying, record the conversation identifier, response identifier, last displayed event, and terminal status if available. Check whether the server completed the response while the client was disconnected. Use these observations to narrow the diagnosis: | Observation | Possible cause to investigate | | --- | --- | | The same response identifier replays its opening text | The client may be appending replayed events instead of reconciling them. | | A new response identifier appears after reconnect | The application may have submitted another generation request. | | The conversation identifier changes | Thread selection or authentication may have failed. | | The response completed while the screen was offline | The client may need to retrieve the completed result. | These are hypotheses to test against logs. They are not vendor-wide diagnoses. ## Resume a response where the API supports it The cited API guide describes creating a response with background execution and streaming enabled. Track stored-event sequence numbers for resumption. Exclude keepalive counters from the resume cursor, as the guide's example does. That mechanism applies to the documented API path. It does not establish a resume button, setting, or equivalent behavior in ChatGPT. Check the actual API, SDK, retention requirements, and response status before selecting a recovery method. A proposed client recovery sequence is: 1. Save the response identifier and last applied stored-event cursor. 2. Reconnect with the same authenticated user. 3. Retrieve the existing response status. 4. Resume eligible streaming after the saved cursor, or retrieve the completed response. 5. Apply each event once in the display. 6. Record completion or an explicit recovery failure. Do not treat that sequence as tested implementation code. Test it against the version your application uses. ## Protect business actions from retries Suppose an assistant prepares a draft from an approved business record. A reconnect should recover that draft. It should not create another send, publish request, or payment operation. Use a separate action record with a stable identifier and outcome. Before retrying an action, inspect that record. If the outcome is unknown, stop automatic execution and investigate it. This is a proposed application control, not a guarantee supplied by streaming. Keep business facts, approvals, and completed outputs in storage you control. The recovered conversation should cite the same approved source revision. ## Reproduce the failure with harmless work Use synthetic text and disable external actions. Disconnect after the first visible text, reconnect, and compare the response identifiers and event cursors. Repeat after server completion. The proposed pass conditions are one completed response, no duplicated display segments, a preserved conversation identifier, and no repeated business action. An interrupted test should leave a clear failure record. If the product exposes no identifiers or event logs, preserve the conversation and visible error. Record the cause as unresolved. Use the maintained business brief to resume the task without assuming the first attempt did nothing.
