# Adapt your organic strategy to Google AI Overviews and keep the clicks that matter.

Your top informational page still ranks first. Search Console shows the same average position as last year. Clicks are down by a third. When you search the query yourself, a generated answer fills the screen above your result. It cites your page in a small link that few people open.

AI Overviews are Google's generated answers at the top of the results page. They combine information from several sources into one summary. Google tested the feature as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in 2023. It launched AI Overviews in the United States in May 2024 and expanded them to many more countries through 2025. For many informational queries, the answer now satisfies the searcher without a click.

This guide covers which queries trigger an Overview and what citation does for traffic. It also shows how to measure the impact and which content keeps its clicks.

## Know which queries trigger an Overview

Google does not generate an Overview for every search. It generates one when a combined answer adds value beyond the standard results.

Queries that often trigger an Overview:

- **Complex informational questions.** "What are the tax effects of converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?" The answer needs several factors combined.
- **Comparisons.** "Difference between an LLC and an S-Corp for a small business." The Overview may show a comparison table.
- **How-to and procedure questions.** "How to change brake pads on a 2024 Toyota Camry." The Overview assembles steps from several sources.
- **Definition with context.** "What is CRISPR and why does it matter for medicine?"

Queries that rarely trigger an Overview:

- **Navigational queries.** "Facebook login" or "Amazon customer service." The searcher wants a destination.
- **Transactional queries.** "Buy standing desk." The searcher is ready to buy.
- **Local queries.** "Italian restaurant near me." The local pack serves this better.
- **Breaking news.** "Latest Microsoft earnings report." Generated answers lag live news.
- **Deep technical queries.** "Kubernetes pod scheduling algorithm implementation." The needed depth exceeds an Overview.

Trigger patterns change as Google expands the feature. Check your own keyword set each month.

## Understand what citation does for traffic

An Overview cites sources in expandable reference links. A citation does not guarantee a click. Two published studies measure the effect:

- **Pew Research Center, July 2025.** In the March 2025 browsing data of 900 US adults, users clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits with an AI summary. Without a summary, they clicked on 15 percent of visits.
- **Ahrefs, April 2025.** In its keyword sample, an AI Overview went with a 34.5 percent lower click-through rate for the first-position page.

Treat these figures as directional. The studies used different methods and samples, and Google changes the feature often. Your own Search Console data is the only reliable measure for your site.

The core problem stays the same across studies. You can rank first, earn a citation, and still lose a large share of expected traffic, because the searcher got the answer without a click. [Zero-click searches and SEO](/articles/zero-click-searches-seo) covers the wider pattern.

## Measure the impact on your own site

### Track where Overviews appear

1. **Check the results by hand.** Search your target keywords and record which ones show an Overview. Repeat monthly, because coverage expands.
2. **Use your rank tracker.** Semrush, Ahrefs, and BrightEdge flag keywords with an AI Overview in their rank tracking views.
3. **Read Search Console.** Compare click-through rates for queries with an Overview against queries without one. Falling click-through at a stable position points to Overview impact.

### Separate traffic by intent

Tag each landing page by intent: informational, commercial, or transactional. In Google Analytics 4, use a custom dimension for the tag. Then read the two lines apart:

- informational traffic that falls while rankings hold suggests Overview impact;
- commercial traffic that holds while informational traffic falls confirms that commercial pages are resilient.

### Benchmark against competitors

Use a visibility index such as Sistrix to see whether competitors show the same pattern. If your informational traffic fell 30 percent and theirs did not, the problem is your content. If the whole industry fell, the Overview is the likely cause.

## Protect traffic with five content responses

### Go deeper than an Overview can

Overviews are good at broad, surface answers. They struggle with real depth, new analysis, and specialist expertise.

Replace a topic an Overview answers in full with one it cannot. "What is keyword difficulty and why does it matter?" is fully answerable in an Overview. "How six SEO tools calculate keyword difficulty, and what that means for content priorities" needs a click.

Five features make a page worth the click:

- thorough coverage of the core topic, often 3,000 words or more;
- original research, proprietary data, or case analysis;
- your own frameworks or methods;
- downloadable tools, templates, or checklists;
- interactive elements such as calculators, assessments, and configurators.

A page that gives utility, not only information, keeps its clicks whether an Overview appears or not.

### Target queries where the click still wins

Some informational queries still need the page:

- **Tutorials with visuals.** "How to install a tile backsplash" needs video and step photos.
- **Experience and case studies.** "What is it like to work at Google as a software engineer?" needs firsthand accounts.
- **Opinionated analysis.** "Best CRM for real estate teams" needs a specific recommendation, not a neutral summary.
- **Local detail.** "Deck permit rules in Austin, Texas" needs jurisdiction-specific facts.
- **Current events.** "Impact of the latest Google algorithm update" needs recent data.

These query types tend to keep more of their clicks.

### Structure pages so they can be cited

A citation earns less traffic than a classic top result, but it gives brand visibility. Google's Search Central documentation, "AI features and your website," says a page needs no special markup to appear in AI features. Standard SEO practice applies. Five practices raise the odds:

- **Answer early.** Put a clear, short answer in the opening paragraph instead of in the middle of the page.
- **Keep it current.** Update pages on a schedule. Fresh pages have an edge over old pages on the same topic.
- **Build link authority.** Google appears to weight sources with stronger link profiles.
- **Show E-E-A-T.** Author credentials, editorial review, and expert attribution matter most on "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL) topics.
- **Use valid structured data.** Article markup helps Google read the page. Note that Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites and retired HowTo rich results in 2023. [The structured data implementation guide](/articles/structured-data-implementation) covers current markup.

A practical layout serves both the Overview and the reader who clicks:

```text
H1: What is Domain Authority?
[a 150-word definition and explanation]
Contents:
- How Domain Authority is calculated
- Domain Authority vs Page Authority
- Limits of Domain Authority
- Other authority metrics
- How to use Domain Authority in SEO strategy
[3,000 or more words of full coverage]
```

The short opening serves extraction. The depth serves the click.

### Shift the mix toward commercial intent

Overviews mainly affect informational queries. Commercial and transactional queries keep a more traditional results page.

Rebalance the content mix. A site that was 70 percent informational and 30 percent commercial can move toward 50 and 50. Commercial page types with low Overview exposure include:

- product comparisons, such as "Ahrefs vs Semrush";
- buyer's guides, such as "best email marketing software for B2B";
- reviews and case studies;
- pricing comparisons;
- alternatives pages, such as "alternatives to HubSpot";
- product-specific implementation guides.

These pages bring bottom-of-funnel traffic, which converts better. The shift protects traffic and raises conversion at the same time.

### Add video

Overviews summarize text. They do not replace video. YouTube results keep their place on many results pages that show an Overview, and many people prefer video for visual or complex topics.

1. Make videos for high-traffic informational queries that lost clicks to an Overview.
2. Optimize each video for YouTube search with a keyword title, a full description, and relevant tags.
3. Embed each video in the matching article.
4. Make short 60 to 90-second answer videos that can appear in video carousels.

[Video SEO and search features](/articles/video-seo-search-features) covers the details.

## Read the impact by vertical

| Vertical | Overview exposure | Response |
|---|---|---|
| YMYL: health, finance, legal | Varies; Google applies stricter quality standards, and financial answers lean on government, education, and major institution sources | Strong E-E-A-T: credentials, editorial review, authoritative citations |
| How-to and tutorials | High for procedural queries such as "how to change car oil" or "how to optimize SQL queries" | Video tutorials, interactive tools, depth beyond the basic steps: advanced methods, troubleshooting, special cases |
| Product and service research | Low for "best", "how to choose", and review queries | Keep strong buying guides, comparisons, and reviews |
| Local | Rare; the local pack and map serve these queries | Keep Google Business Profile work, local citations, and location pages |

## Build content that an Overview cannot replace

### Move from information to utility

When Google summarizes information at the top of the page, information alone no longer differentiates. Pair the explanation with a calculator for the reader's situation and a template to apply it. Add a case study that shows the result. Utility keeps the click.

Four utility formats work well:

- **Calculators and assessments.** A mortgage affordability calculator or an SEO audit scorecard gives a personal result that an Overview cannot. The article around the tool gives context and authority.
- **Builders.** An email sequence builder or a meta description generator turns reading into doing.
- **Decision tools.** "Which CRM fits you? Answer 8 questions for a recommendation." An interactive decision tree beats a static chart.
- **Gated resources.** Publish a public article of 1,500 to 2,000 words for search visibility. Offer a longer guide, templates, and checklists behind an email form. Readers who only wanted the answer skip it, and readers who want to implement it exchange an email.

Interactive content costs more to design, build, and test. Measure engagement time and conversion against your text-only pages before you build more.

### Publish first-person expertise

Overviews summarize third-person facts well. They cannot reproduce a practitioner's own account. Examples of titles with this quality:

- "I've hired 47 SEO specialists over 8 years. Here's what actually predicts success."
- "We grew organic traffic from 2,000 to 200,000 monthly sessions. Here's the strategy and the mistakes."
- "I audited 500 websites. These 12 technical patterns keep coming back."

Readers look for practitioner judgment, not only combined knowledge.

### Grow community content

Forums, Q&A sections, discussions, and user reviews resist Overview displacement for three reasons. People trust peer experience in a different way than a summary. Discussions cover thousands of specific long-tail questions that formal content never reaches. Active communities also produce fresh content without editorial staff. Common models are a forum on Discourse, Circle, or Mighty Networks, Q&A on content pages, and review systems. Crowdsourced data such as salary surveys also works.

### Count brand value, not only clicks

Repeated citations build recognition even without clicks. That recognition shows up as direct visits and as searches that pair a keyword with your brand name. It also lifts branded click-through and builds trust before a purchase. When informational traffic falls, brand value becomes the main reason to keep investing in informational content.

## Assign the work by role

| Role | Priority 1 | Priority 2 | Priority 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content manager | Audit the top 100 landing pages for Overview exposure and calculate the traffic at risk | Plan 5 to 10 pages that gain a calculator, tool, or assessment | Cut pure informational production by 30 to 40 percent and move the effort to commercial pages, tools, and templates |
| SEO strategist | Track Overview presence across the whole keyword set and flag high-value losses | Write citation guidelines: answer-first structure, markup, E-E-A-T steps | Build other channels: YouTube, LinkedIn articles, industry forums |
| Marketing executive | Re-forecast with a possible 20 to 30 percent informational traffic decline over 12 to 18 months | Keep some informational budget for brand visibility | Invest in conversion work on the traffic that remains |
| Developer or technical SEO | Deploy valid Article and other supported markup; watch Search Console for errors | Hold strong Core Web Vitals and mobile performance, because each remaining click is worth more | Build reusable calculator and configurator components so content teams need no custom build per tool |

The executive forecast range is a planning assumption, not a measurement. [SEO forecasting under executive scrutiny](/articles/seo-forecasting-executive-scrutiny) shows how to present a range like this.

## Plan two example responses

The two plans below are examples, not measured cases. Each shows how the method applies to one business model.

A health information publisher gets most of its sessions from informational health queries and the rest from a symptom checker and drug pages. After Overviews arrive, read the two groups apart. If informational traffic falls and symptom checker traffic holds, invest in the tool side. Improve the symptom checker, and add personal health assessments and procedure videos. Partner with clinicians for first-person content.

A B2B SaaS content program focuses on marketing education. When "what is" and "how to" queries gain Overviews, sessions fall. Cut basic informational production, and add comparisons, ROI calculators, buying guides, and practitioner case studies. Track leads next to sessions. The new pages carry higher intent, so leads can hold or rise while sessions fall.

## Keep informational content and featured snippets in the plan

Overviews do not replace organic results. Commercial, local, navigational, and deep specialist queries keep a classic results page. Coverage changes over time, so check your own keywords each month.

Do not stop informational content, but trade volume for depth. Write fewer, fuller informational pieces. They still attract backlinks, build topical authority, generate leads, and build the brand, even when direct traffic falls.

Featured snippets still matter. A featured snippet and an Overview can appear on the same page. The Overview lowers snippet click-through, but the snippet keeps visibility and space. Watch [Google algorithm updates by role](/articles/google-algorithm-updates-role-response) for changes to both features.
